$250? Ridiculous.

Opinions?

I don't think the price is ridiculous...

...Until you factor in the 3.5-5 hour battery life.

If you don't like the price then don't buy the product.

Probably not ridiculous seeing as it is a new platform for to the new generation of consoles.

I've been told that this is a fairly heavy device, and 3.5 hours is a pretty fast time for it to use all that energy. I wonder how it keeps its chips cool?

I've heard that the device does have more processing power than the wii, but that's still pretty spendy for a handheld.

The new PSP is said to have more RAM then a 360 and comparable graphics to a PS3. Handhelds in general are getting pretty crazy with power/energy consumption.

No way I'll pay $250 for a handheld system. I will simply patiently wait for Nintendo to show some sense and lower the price to at least $200 (150 to 175 would be even better).  I'd love to get one though.  The games look great.

My concern is that if they are going to build a device which consumes so much energy that it has to be plugged in to the wall for twice as long as it can be played, it defeats the purpose of it being portable, they'd may as well just build consoles with displays on the controllers.

I've nearly convinced myself it is reasonable to purchase it solely for Zelda: OoT.

Help me.

That's what I was thinking. The future of handhelds; no longer handhelds

Honestly, I can't wait until this whole obsession with 3D just goes away. It can be cool at times when the effect is warranted. But its just getting tacked on to everything.

It seems pointless to spend $250 for such a device.

When traveling if I am bored and feel like playing a game, I can either (a) run about any recent game on my laptop at 1920x1080 or (B) play something on my iPhone from the app store.

/absolutely zero interest in the 3DS

How is it a gimmick if it's the entire reason the console exists?

I was also looking forward to the 3DS until the recent price announcement, I've got a PSP but not a DS/DSi so the whole 3DS hype was appealing but it's been priced at a whopping £220 here in the UK ($350 by comparison according to XE.com). This years a game fest with many 'triple A' titles so will have to give it a miss until a price drop.

The price unfortunately reflects how much was spent on the technology. I personally don't see them breaking even on this product for about 3 years so it probably won't be getting much cheaper anytime soon unless nobody buys it. But that won't happen.

I tend to think that prices usually reflect what people will pay, but then again I'm a miserable old cynic.  I feel that I probably need to say "bah" and sneer unpleasantly for my post to be complete. :P

Oh you old folks and your complaining ;)

Basically if you spend X ammount of money making a product you need to make that back before you turn a profit. And they spent a stupid ammount on this thing. It's not even that much fun compared to a regular DS. But then i'm not a fan of all of Nintendos gimmicky Japanese nonsense XD.

You obviously don't know how businesses work.  You need to ensure that you spend as much money as possible before the end of the financial year to ensure that your business unit doesn't have a cut in its budget.  Any losses can be offset against employee outsourcing and other wastage and written off against the previous tax year unless it's a Tuesday in the month before Lent in which case it can be transferred to the corresponding business unit in the chief executive master chief officer chairman's aunt's dog's subsidiary registered in the neighbouring tax office.  The competing region's sales figures can be factored in to executive officer's bonuses and losses for the next tax year (brought forward from the Chinese Year of the Stoat) are then transferred into stock options and refactored into the market by a stock split.  Further losses can be incurred by spending above market rates for a loss-leading competitor with a nice logo as specified by worst practice.

At which point nobody has the faintest idea what the development costs were or how profitable the product, just as it should be.
