It worries me that all that almost makes sense to me.

There will most likely be a new and improved version in the not too distant future anyway much like the GBA with a backlight or whatever it was. Probably with extra battery life or some other feature thats been conveniently ignored up until now. The whole 3 hour battery life could easily be a ploy to sell extra power packs or charge packs or something. Plus £230 for a handheld? No thanks.

I'm also refusing to buy anything from Nintendo until they stop trying to insult my intelligence with their commercials. God the ads they show in the UK are just offensive.

Seem to be effective though since the Wii and DS have sold millions in the UK.

I want it bad, but but I have too much to play for awhile, hopefully by the time I'm ready to buy it the price will have dropped to 200.

However, it's Nintendo, so there's about a 96% chance the actual gaming experience of the 3DS will be the best damn thing on the market. I just hope the system eventually gets its own, orginal Zelda rather than a remake eventually. I'm also pumped for the Kid Icarus title.

I just hope Nintendo don't screw Europe out of good games like they have a habit of doing with their consoles.

It's a heavy price but not surprising. Handheld prices have been climbing steadily, and not just because of inflation. I'll buy it anyway. Also, since I missed the whole DS generation, this nets me the new 3D games plus the countless amazing DS rpgs. It's funny that its more expensive than a Wii though!

Technically it's a more powerful machine than a Wii.  It has the same level graphics plus 3D tech, the same online functionality as well.  In many ways it makes sense that it costs more.

Certainly. But it's terribly sad that they have a handheld more powerful than their home console. They really skimped on the hardware this console generation to make it more affordable, and I think that hurt them in the long-run, at least in the software department.

Not in the sales department though. Which gives me a bit of fear for the future to be honest if the company selling the inferior product in both software and hardware can so easily outsell its two main competitors, will we slowly see the death of for lack of a better word "hardcore" high quality games? Are we already seeing that with Kinect? I think thats something this new generation of handhelds is doing to calm alot of peoples fears by going for raw horsepower and some core games with the likes of Zelda and Resident Evil. I still wouldn't buy it but from what I've seen so far atleast it seems to be a step away from the housewife market for the time being. Which can only be a good thing. Mind you I haven't been checking up on it much, more casual browsing so I could be completely wrong lol.

Well here's the thing about the Wii that could be misleading... Sure, they did indeed sell a bajillion of them. But I'm quite sure a large portion of those are now sitting around collecting dust. When it launched, it was the thing to have that Christmas. But with no comparable horsepower next to the 360 and PS3, and a selection of mostly niche games, Nintendo hasn't exactly been making headlines in the console department these last few years. The major titles for the other consoles these days rarely even get a Wii port. Why? Because Nintendo wanted to make an affordable system, and not something that could actually compete. I have no doubt that it's Nintendo's handhelds that have been keeping them afloat. If it was solely the Wii that they were relying on, the picture might not be so pretty.

But the Wii KEEPS selling still, so clearly whether they're collecting dust or not is not an issue for nintendo.  Also, teh Wii has some of teh best games this generation, albeit they're all Nintendo first party games-- Super Mario Galaxy 1+2, Twilight Princess, New Super Mario Bros.  (Though a bit short.), Super Smash Bros. Brawl, Donkey kong country Returns, Kirby's Epic Yarn (again, a bit short, but still excellent).  So Nintendo is making plenty of money and selling a lot.  It's the other publishers who can't seem to sell their games on Wii.

Which really brings up another important point. While the Wii (and Gamecube before it) have / had third-party support, many companies feel like they're actually competing with Nintendo for software sales (which they absolutely are). Whereas Sony and Microsoft will put out a few of their big self-published games per year, it doesn't completely destroy any chance other publishers have of getting a slice of the pie, as is the case with Nintendo.

Look at it this way... let's say you're a third-party publisher, and you know that a new Gears of War is game coming out. Don't release your game in the same window. Not a problem. But Nintendo has first-party games coming out all the time, and for a third-party publisher, that very much is a problem. You're fighting for leftover scraps with other publishers after the console manufacturer takes the majority of the software sales with their own games. And that's why Nintendo is dead last this console generation. There are a lot of innovative, interesting games coming from third-party publishers, and the majority of them are only being released for PS3 and 360.
