I feel like anytime someone feels they find a situation that might somehow apply they'll link it up with authoritative conviction no matter how tenuous the relationship is. I understand tropes are a necessary tool (and often important to recognize, like Women In Refirgerators and feminism) but the way they're often wielded in the forums is unnecessary at best.

imo

I also find that there's a lot of people who believe that if they can find a trope that kinda meets a situation they don't like, that is objective proof that the thing they don't like is BadWrong.  Add that to the number of grudgewankers and insane shippers who use it as their personal battleground to try to make their fanon into canon, and you get a lot of weird crap.

Alright, so with respect to elves in general, we still don't know how tall they are relative to humans, either male or female, though you said it was to make them look less like children so that sounds to me like a general change rather than Fenris alone being made taller.

Of course it's a general change. Why would Fenris have a unique height?

Eventually you will all see this for yourselves, rather than trying to claw out information from my words-- which are clearly insufficient. I think I'll give it a rest. Sorry for stirring everyone up.

This. <3

Edit: Aw, Gaider... well it's nice to have some information. Sucks that all the hubbabaloo came out of it (especially if you got scolded for it).

*I* think romances with dwarves are squick because they're hairy and stocky. Just because I wouldn't dig such a romance myself doesn't mean I wouldn't approve of someone else writing it.

What if they wax?

Now there's a question -- would Varric shave his chest if it meant getting romance with Ladyhawke?

And would Ladyhawke be still interested in Varric sans chest hair...

My Lady Hawke would be! Varric is hot, chest hair or no chest hair.

Surely the angry tears spilled over it made it still somewhat worth it? Image IPB

Thank you for taking your time both to answer the initial question and for the follow ups as well. It may stir things up but it's still nice to be able to get heads up about these changes.

Never date men who wear their undies outside their tights.  My mother told me that.

REALLY?! Is there ANYTHING left to complain about in this game?

I feel intimidated by Hawke's beard.  Mine isn't nearly that impressive.

Varric  is too attractive, it makes real life guys seem boring, that could destroy many potential relationships.
Shame on you Bioware, shame on you.

Forgive me the sin of linking to something humorous instead of serious, bless me and I'll sin no more.

But remember one of the mantra of the site is  Tropes are not bad.

Ok I lied.

It's bad when you have to open up several extra windows just to be able to click on the tabs in the top bad.

I figured, but it's hard to tell because Merrill is supposedly "tiny."  Anyway thanks for the response.

Everyday I check the forum I see more people splitting hairs out of boredom it seems.

It doesn't bother my how tall the elves are in the game. Ive ready fantasy where they are tiny, like fairy small or you get the Elder Scrolls lore where the Golden Elves are very tall and skinny but wood elves are shorter, tanner and sometimes even stocky.

Like humans I am sure Elves from Dragon Age come in all different shape and sizes. Those in the game probably represent the average height of an elf.

Its annoying at times, but thank god the forums exist. I sometimes get to pull coworkers into my cubicle so we can share a laugh at the crazy that goes on here.

If the height was changed to make them more attractive because they will be love interests, then do it. You're already making big boobed women, open-chested men. You're showing the skin and carefully designing your characters to look good. You're already doing that.

It is a fact that men look better looking down and women looking up. Because that's the natural height difference in human beings. Isabella has big boobs because men generally like big boobs. If Fenris was an LI and was made taller (or at least equal) to the female PC, it is because women generally like their men taller than them.

Not true of all women, or of all men. And definitely just a shallow characteristic that can be overcome by simply liking the other person.

But if they did it to make the female player more comfortable - f***ing yay. We need more of that.

Since they don't let you play as a Dwarf or an Elf, height is an important issue when romancing cross-race, whether you want to believe it or not. The best way to not alienate every player who would never in their dreams date Varric simply because he's short (most of his complaints as an LI are that he's short, or too hairy) is to tweak heights so that the height difference is not as great as it was in the other game.

The kids must be like, "Mommy, where's daddy? Doesn't he love me anymore? He said he'd read me a story before bed! Waaaaah."

...Okay, that was really insensitive. I'm sorry.

Like someone said before Tropes Are Not Bad. I don't see too many people linking to the site to point out how bad the trope is.

Think of it this way: You've always been aware of the archetype/plotline/theme in fiction, but never had a good way to describe it. TVTropes does it for you.

wow.... Never knew height of a computer character was such a huge issue lol.

Personally I think it can always be explained by saying that these elves are from a different part of Thede hence the size difference.

In reality I think bioware made the game and its their decision to make what changes are needed to make it easier to do the things that they want to achieve. Somehow I doubt it was for romance issues

But if the height of the elves is such a major factor to people then either get a mod to shrink them again - or don't play the game.

I don't have a problem with tropes or TVTropes as a thing.

I get irked when I see people linking to it to make a point (often the point being THIS IS TERRIBLE HERE IS WHY /insertTVTrope).

Off the top of my head: that there's a name for the short-skirt-high-stockings thing? Cool. That I learned about it because someone posted the TVTrope link as their evidence for why Isabela's outfit is terrible? Not so cool.
