I got used to a two mage backline in DA:O, with both possessing support capabilities. I imagine I'll run the same 2 mages, 1 rogue, 1 warrior setup as before. I'll be playing on nightmare, and I'm not too keen on more than 1 warrior (friendly fire aoe).

Im inclined to go with a Rogue, but Im also inclined to go with Isabella, Merrill, and Bethany. That would be 2 Mages and 2 Rogues. I'd like to have a warrior in there somewhere, but I can't see replacing any of those with Aveline, and Id really rather play as a Rogue my first playthrough than a warrior, but maybe I'll change my mind between now and then. But I've gone warrior-less before, wouldn't be the first time :) . I mostly took Morrigan, Leliana, and Wynne in DAO, regardless of what class I was playing at the time. It wasn't uncommon at all to have a 3 mages and one rogue setup. So while I'd rather have 1 rogue, 1 warrior, and 2 mages, I guess I'll just have to see, right now its looking like a 2 rogue and 2 mage setup for me.

Sword + Shield Warrior, Dual Weapon Warrior, Archer Rogue, Healer/Damage Dealer Mage

Swap Dual Warrior for Two Handed Warrior in DA2 probably.

I always play mages, usually a balanced build focused on offense. Then I add a warrior, a rogue, and another mage with primarily support/healing spells.

Its secondary to RP'ing and what characters I want to take with me. I never think in terms of classes because you can make almost any mix work.

This.

My group makeup is usually something like this:
My character
My character's LI
My character's BFF
A "wild card" who is selected either because they might have some interesting banter I want to hear or because I might suspect/know that they'll have some unique dialogue based on where I'm going.

Image IPBImage IPBThat's a good point, but I still ended up with balanced classes every time.  It feels weird to have an unbalanced party.  I wonder if DA2 will be more forgiving for having unusual combinations.  Maybe I'm just bad at the game, but I found it difficult to play with unusual builds.

Well I always played on easy, and more often than not the LI was Morrigan, so I was never without a mage. I didn't really worry about tanking, due in part to the easy difficulty and in part to how I set up my rogue, so it was pretty hard to go wrong there.

I think it'll kind of "work out" in DA2 as well, because I'm a big fan of the family aspect, so I will probably always have Carver or Bethany with me...and either way that means I'll have a mage. If I'm not playing a tank then I expect playing on easy will largely remove the necessity of having one in the first place.

First playthrough will probably be warrior (sword + board) Hawke, Bethany, Isabela, and then whoever seems the most interesting at the time. Whatever the case, all the bases will be covered.

Whoever I like the most.  I just adjust my tactics to suit whoever I have in my party.  I hope it's not really necessary to have certain skillsets to make your party effective.

I prefer having 2 mages, a warrior and a rogue, but I'll switch it up if there's a particular party member that I like enough.

Shame DA2 won't have Shale. Ideal party would be Archer, Archer, Archer Shale. Anyway, my next ideal would probably be Warrior, Rogue, Mage (Spirit Healer), Mage (DD, Control). It honestly depends on the situation really and what enemies I am going to be expecting. I would switch the DD, Control Mage for an additional warrior if the dungeon calls for it.

Ideal party for me? One Tank, One Mage (either Healer or Crowd Control) and one Rogue (most of the time me with Bow&Arrow)... 4th spot.. goes for a damage dealer. Whoever that was. Could be another mage, or another rogue or another warrior... depending on the situation.. or a Beast. I really loved bringing Dog along when i was up against a lot Mages... it was my one Beast Magekiller squat-thingy... all i had to do was get him Overwhelm and a tactic that would save Overwhelm for use against mages and people attacking my mage. Otherwise having him run around and stun and charge people. Was so cool to see an Enemy Mage start to cast and Dog kind of charged him and tore into the mage. The Overwhelm was so powerful.. few mages ever got to stand up again... and even if they did... by that time i was done cordinating everyone onto the mage anyway.

I was wondering if you had an ideal DA party by class alone ? I have heard people talk about DA parties by name but what about just by class ?

Warrior tank always. Then a mage for healing, though that depends on my level and how many health potions I have. If I have a lot then sometimes I'll skip the mage if I'm already playing one. In place of a the mage I would probably add another warrior. Shale usually. An then of course a rogue who hangs back in a fight and pick locks and stuff.

Mine would be 2 warriors , 1 mage and 1 rogue .

That is a great, well balanced set-up that can't really go wrong. I myself prefer more utility and crowd control abilities and generally go with 2 mages, 1 warrior, and 1 rogue - but this made DA:O a bit too easy.

Thats usually the set up I go with in Awakening and it works everytime.;)

In DA:O I used My AW (Crowd Control, off-tank), Morrigan (healing), Sten (damage) and Alistair (tank), in DA:A I used my AW (CC, OT), Anders (healing), Sigrun (damage) and Justice (tank).

I plan my DA2 party to be : My mage (damage, if something like AW isn't there, since I can't really see Hawke as healer mage), ??? (I need a mage healer, but since Bethany will die... it would be really stupid if we don't get another mage companion), Aveline (tank) and Varric (damage)

So, it is 2 mages, warrior, rogue.

This will definitely change though, since I mostly choose party members because of their personality, but this seem to be the most likely group.

Two mages for destroying everything. One rogue for lockpicking, baiting and comic relief. One warrior for carrying all the loot and making the mages feel better about themselves.

I usually end-up going Warrior-Warrio-Rogue-Mage, but it really depends on which characters I like most, rather than a party-balance issue. I'm pretty sure the last party I ran on Hard mode through Origins was a DPS Rogue with Sten, Zevran and Wynne as an Arcane-Warrior Tank. That was entertaining, and not just for the dialogue ("I will never forgive you for preserving the Anvil and potentially condemning thousands to slaver.... oooo, books and wine!").

A DPS focused warrior, an archer rogue, and a dual wielding rogue. The protagonist slot is filled by a mage loaded with healing and crowd control spells. She also packs some offense, but most of her time is spent weakening the enemy or buffing the party. Another reason for this approach is it takes less micromanagement. Other than spending some time swinging the dual wielder into backstab position, I focus on my character. Once in a blue moon I will possess the archer to halt a mage or enemy archer with pinning shot, or to activate sustainables such as aim or suppressing fire.

I used to fill the warrior slot with a dedicated tank, but healing tends to make that role superfluous in my experience.

Edit: I may change my party makeup completely in DA2 depending on how I feel about the available characters. I *can* safely say my mage will be the only mage I am willing to include. The idea of an apostate sister team-up appealed to me enough to want to micromanage two mages; but without that incentive I prefer a one mage party. Based on the limited information we have, I will probably stick to the same mage/rogue/rogue/warrior pattern. Too early to call.

2 tanks, the dog (added with the mod or with the whistle in DA2), a full on healer mage and an archer. I deal comparatively measly DPS but can take huge amounts of damage without much risk for wiping. Plus it gives the battles a nicely long length.
