This game has been so frustrating for me. But now this major technical difficulty is driving me nuts.

I like to alt tab out of the game a lot to check the web.  But it crashes a lot when I alt tab.

Can someone please help me out? Thanks! :)

Those (typically) don't make much difference when this situation appears (nevertheless, anyone asking about problems should get in the habit of filling out the normal problem reports, with component inventory). Games these days can't deal with loss of focus very well, they simply aren't designed to be part of a multi-tasking suite, and must be fully paused before minimizing. The save menu is the easiest, simplest way to get to a place that will work, but you have to wait for that menu to finish loading.

Can you be more specific?

What i've been trying is hitting escape, then alt tabbing but it still crashes. It seems to always be on the 2nd time I alt tab out.

You can't press them in any kind of instant succession. Wait for the save menu to stabilize.

It takes me five seconds to alt+tab out and back in the game even outside of menus. I play in windowed mode without a border since I play at my native resolution. Maybe that makes it a bit easier.

Try setting the game's resolution to desktop's (or vice-versa) and select Window (No Border) mode. It shouldn't be meddling with the resolution much this way, perhaps even preventing any mode switches that don't work for you.

I'll try that, good idea.  Windowed with no borders. I really hope this fixes it. This has ruined my entire night. I really wanted to enjoy this game.

Despite their advertising and promises, Windows is not a true multi-tasking operating system. It is a multi-threading operating system. This means it it breaks the tasks down into segments, and processes them in a in a piecemeal serial fashion, rather than in parallel.

BSD, Linus, Unix, and OSX (Unix derivative) are all examples of true multi-tasknig OS's. Even the ancient OS/2 Warp was a true multitasker.

I believe it, I've lost faith in Microsoft over the past years. I can't wait until someone finally steps up with a proper OS.

While I am first in line to agree that Windows has a long way to go, the fact is that it is games, more than any other software, that have trouble minimizing, quite commonly. This one is only the latest of many, and it is not at all anything that Bioware has any exclusive lock on doing.

I've wrote many software applications and all 100% of them have zero problems minimizing.  Bioware is incompetent.

Given your poor grammar, I'd hate to see how well you manage the correct syntax for something as complex as games. Excel macros are one thing, 3d games with highly detailed and rendered graphics are another.

@Gaxe: Linux is becoming more and more mainstream, to the point where I have my folks (both hitting their 70's)  using Ubuntu with Open Office, and GIMP. But being open source, no Linux version has the marketting crunch that M$ has, so they dont quite get the acknowledgement they should. Apple is on the right track, with OSX being a Unix derivative, but Big Jobbies tight fist around the reigns of Apple means it is as proprietry, and as crap, as Windows is.

Can you elaborate more, because I don't see what's the difference between quickly switching threads and... quickly switching threads. You also can't execute anything in parallel unless the devices to execute in are parallel, too.

I have near-zero experience with Unix, so your statement confuses me, which is the reason I'm asking.

EDIT: Now that I think of it, a PM would be more suitable for this.

(This is Gaxe btw).

English wasn't my first language.  Also I type so fast that often times I don't give my sentences a second read.  I just want to play Mass Effect 2 with out it crashing.  I'm in game mode, not business mode.  But it sucks I have to resort to business mode just to enjoy my game time.

The first time you type a sentence, it usually isn't perfect.  Next time you type a sentence analyze yourself and you'll see.  A good programmer can self analyze, obviously you've never done this before.  To actually watch yourself type and observe how many errors you make before submitting a sentence. Try it.  No one is perfect at it, no one.

As much as I'm hating Windows I must use it since it's mainstream like you said.

My apologies, you're right. Although the difference is I normally get the grammar correct, but my typing speed tends to create the odd typo, either jumbled letters, or the letter next to the one I wanted. Unfortunately, as along time on-call tech, I have never been able to get out of analytical mode, its pretty much on 24/7.
You jumping accounts gave the impression of being a random troll. My profile pic is that of a Warhammer Troll Slayer, so I sort of leapt into the fray like any good troll slayer would. :D

Like Fredvdp, I am able to alt-tab out to windows pretty much at will. Unlike him though, I play in full screen mode, and my system specs arent anything special. The screen shots of the ME2 config utility showing specs in the "Read First" thread are actually of my system. Both my desktop and ME2 are running at 1600x900.

As the other have mentioned, try running both at the same resolution and colour depth.
Are you running any MP3's or other music in the background on your PC while you are playing? Or viewing any sort of web animation (ie Flash/Silverlight) that has its own audio/video properties that could be interfering?

I dont hate Windows as much as much as I hate Microsofts methodology. They seem to think that shinies should take priority over security, stability, and functionality. Windows ME and Vista (before the service packs stripped out the crud) are 2 great examples of this way of thinking.

If alt-tab doesn't work for you.Just go to the game utility config and select windowed mode so you can just minimize and maximize it.
