You can skip the autoupdate utility provided by the game and download the critical rebuild for your version from the legacy Bioware site.
As far as the idiosyncrasies of installing with the Vista OS you may find your answers in this thread also from the legacy Bioware forum.
Some of the same issues are addressed in the instructions for Win7 installation which is available in the aforementioned Tech Forum here on social.
Cheers!

NWN was made before this scheme was implemented so it needs to be approached differently.
Right click the ICON for NWN on your desktop, select RUN AS ADMINISTRATOR and see if that works. If not, post a message back here and we'll have another go at it. Chances are you are not setup to run this program as admin.
Be well. Game on.

VISTA marked a point in Windows (lack of) security in that they attempted to use a LINUX style (ok it is just looks not substance but it was a step in the right direction sort of) in that there is now an ADMINISTRATOR and USERS, a two level system for 'permissions' - which allow one program to use other programs, based on who started them.

The best way to do this is to use your file explorer and right click all of the files with the extention .exe in your NWN installation directory then pick "properties" then "compatibility mode" and set each file to "run as administrator" and to "run in XP compatibility mode service pack 2 or 3" both seem to work well so I use service pack 3. That way if you decide to open the toolset or whatever they are all running correctly for your OS.
As a matter of fact any older game I install in Windows 7 I always do the above adjustments before I run the game and I have so far not found any I can not play in the new OS....hope this helps

Be smart, save the .exe to a folder somewhere, that you can run it again if you need to reinstall etc...
It is an executable you must manually run. You should give the program full access rights to properly patch your game.
