I have the four disk BGI, TotSC, BGII and SoA set playing on Vista. I loades both BGI and TotSC and played totally through BG without a problem. I then started TotSC and completed Ice Isle and spoke with Mendas and was ready to leave Ulgoths Beard and the game asked me to inset disk 5 or 6 (I forget which)! I also tried to reach Durlags Tower and had the same problem. I think this is a throwback to the original version but what should I do?

First you need to locate the baldur.ini file used by the game. It may not necessarily be located in the installation directory, due to Vista's "compatibility files" thingie. Then you need to make sure there's a entry for CD6 in the [Alias] section. If there isn't one, that's likely your problem and you should create one.

I found the alais file and it does NOT have a reference to CD6. I tried adding a line (just like the previous lines identifying CD1-5 but when I try to save it, it just says the path cannot be found to the ini.file. The path to the file I was trying to change is correct for that file. Is this just a Vista thing that can't be changed?

It's been a long time since I've done this but think you can change the version in your install library then copy & paste into the compatibility area.
The best solution is to install to somewhere like c:\\games so vista doesn't get over-protective in the first place.
