Bioware chose to create its own fantasy for swords and sorcery, and its own space-going fantasy for blasters and e-Tees.

This is the future of NWN.
Tacky webpage with sound-effects, speaks volumes about the new direction of the game.

NWN1 and NWN2 are what they are because of the community, even the developers followed the communities lead, and since they released a complete toolset we can do everything they can, even things like flying, horses and the other things they couldn't do.
NWN online won't have that aspect despite i'm sure it will be fun to play, it will have a "superhero" style mission editor, but it's just not the same as a game which allows us to make our own rules, and which embraces the most important rule in D&D which is Rule Zero.
The only reason the things the community makes are not called NWN3 is that we don't work for obsdidian, bioware or atari and there is a lawsuit. The content the community is doing is of varied quality of course, but at it's best by those who have a good reputation it is much higher quality, more bug free ( which is not saying much ), and could easily be sold as a new expansion.
The future of D&D in computer games is resting with us fans and that is not going to change, but then i can say the same about the official RPG, the future of that seems just as good with the unoffical pathfinder rules, perhaps better even, than the 4th edtion rules.

Although, I also hope they secretly polish a 1.24 patch that will be the mother of all patches like the famous 1.69 for NWN1. After that, I can live with NWN2 a few more years.

That's actually a false statement... Aside from 90% of the rules being in completely customizable files (nss and 2da for example), even the core engine rules can be completely remade with Skywing's new server which is a blank-slate server and thus any rules engine can be used: even non-D&D.Gecon wrote...

( It would be a lot closer technically than the NWN Online they are working on which uses "star trek" and "heroes" rules )

I would love a COMPLETE and fully modifiable version of NWN2 with updated graphics, engine, stability and of course classes and races that can be added.
NWN1 and NWN2 live on as long as they have from the community servers... not the publisher. Why can't WoC see that?

Unfortunately the "NWN3" that was supposed to be with Neverwinter just fails.

In all honesty, screw WotC. They messed up the Realms, they messed up with 4E. Now maybe when 5E comes out, we might get another DnD RPG, if that's not an MMO as well.
Personally, I would want a Pathfinder RPG like NwN2. Not limited from Hasbro or WotC and much more balanced with a brand new world. Even if it had to be done partly with Kickstarter.
