So I've tried starting a new game in Awakening, but everytime I do so, the new character has all of his points in "two-handed". My friend also made a new account, but was able to put his points in whatever he wanted. If someone could help me with this I would be very grateful.

Sounds buggy.
Since you're only at the character creator have you tried to create another character instead?
Also, clarify whether you mean the actual points can't be assigned (strength, dexterity, cunning, etc.) or skills (Indomitable, Sword Pummel, etc.). It should be you can assign either points how you want, but again....sounds buggy.
