After playing DA:O a few times I decided to try out some official add-ons and Awakenings expansion.
Got myself an Ultimate Edition.
Uninstalled original game.
Started installer - and the setup will not even run.

All it does is make a temporary directory under %temp% and put installer.exe within. That's it. It shuts down without an error or warning of any kind. Launching this new 'installer' doesn't work.

System: Windows XP (64bit)
Drivers: All up to date

- Original game runs without problem, so it's not a hardware/driver issue.
- I can view and copy from DVDs, so both disks are OK.
- I can run installer with no problem on my work komputer (Windows 7 64bit), so it does work. Can't play on it, obviously.
- Tried installing with minimal services (Microsoft advice) to no avail.
- Tried installing from HD (EA advice) - the same result. Setup just stops.

How do I install it on my game PC?

Is it possible to do a manual install of the game - copy data, add registry, all that stuff?
Or at least manually add Awakenings from UE version on my regular DA:O ?

Based on your description, it seems pretty clear that what you're encountering is a problem with your operating system.  Whether it's something inherent to Windows XP 64-bit or the particular iteration of it on your hard drive, I don't know.

Now, I know that's a frustrating answer.  I expect you're about to say, "But the original game installed on my computer without a problem."  I am sure that is true.  But now... Ultimate Edition is installing more, differently.   It's not the same thing.  As for manual installs, you can manually install DLC (it still needs to authorize in-game) but not Awakening.  It's not DLC, it's an expansion pack.

So here are some possible solutions.  I encourage you to use EA's official tech support at help.dragonage.com first:

1)  You say your drivers are up to date, but make sure XP-64 is up to date.  Force the Windows Update function to check for new updates.

2) Make sure you're logged in with administrator privleges.

3) Nuclear option:  Consider doing a complete re-install of  Windows... I am hesitant to suggest this in your case, beause I've had experience with Win XP 64 and found it to be buggy and unstable.  I haven't run any games on it since Battle for Middle Earth II, and that was only until Vista was patched up enough to become stable.  By the way... I didn't see your system specs, so I assume there's a reason (RAM > 4GB?) for running the 64 bit version of XP to begin with.

4) This is more advice than solution... if you're really committed to 64-bit gaming, consider an OS change.  I've found Windows 7 64 bit to be a very stable platform.  You can get an OEM version for about $100 bucks.  You'd have to install it clean, you can't upgrade it  from XP (and I recommend that anyway).

Again, since this is an out-of-the-box problem, I'd get with EA directly if you have not already.  I'd also suggest you let some others weigh in on this forum before you do anything too drastic.

Best,

RI

Well, EA shut me down after hearing "XP 64bit" :P

If it run with an original instalation, it should with Ultimate as well. And if it wouldn't start automaticaly, there is always the good old way: manual installation.

It took some time, but it works. Now to restore saves and add-ins as well :)

I have a similar problem except it has a data error. I want to try manual install, can someone tell me how to do it or link to a place that has a tutorial?

Sorry for the thread necromancy, but just to check - if you have the original version of Origins and Awakening, can they install alright on a 64-bit version of Windows 7? I was a bit worried when I saw this thread linked in the Solutions Round-Up but then RaenImrahl's comment in his post - "I expect you're about to say, "But the original game installed on my computer without a problem." I am sure that is true. But now... Ultimate Edition is installing more, differently. It's not the same thing." - has thrown me a bit. I'm wanting to play through again to have a finished save for DA2 (which I keep meaning to buy, but kept losing completed DA:O saves whenever I resolved to get it - no tech issues there, just me being forgetful before taking this in for an upgrade) and possibly 3 when it comes out.

Unlike what I did with ME2 and 3 where I used an ME1 save off a website, only to find partway through 3 that a character I had expected to be alive had died in the save I got (apparently, whoever posted the ME1 save on the site had forgot to mention that they'd gotten Kirahee killed on Virmire).

Yes, all versions of the game run fine on Win7, including 64-bit.  I've been playing it on 64-bit machines for years now.   Windows XP-64 was notoriously buggy.

Has anyone tested on Windows 8? I don't expect the answer to be 'yes', but I can hope!

There have been posts about that in the last two weeks.  Look through the recent pages of this forum.
