On the Urn of Ashes quest. Just making sure, because I tried taking it on and...yea, I was pretty much massacred by it <_<
You're not supposed to be able to beat the Dragon on the Urn quest right?

It's optional.

You can totally beat the Urn Dragon with the right strategy. Not to mention its' great practice for learning how to fight a flying dragon thing for when you go against Flemeth and Archie

I don't know, I mean I'm playing the 360 version, and my party and I were only around level 10. We got destroyed =/
The damage it dishes out is brutal, takes me out in like 3 hits.

Lvl 10? Yeah it'll slaughter you.
Level up a bit and you should have no trouble killing it.

You can defeat the dragon, but you're probably not there yet. But remember you can always come back at a later time and fight it.

Do at least the broken circle before engaging high dragon. Also, if this is your first or second playthrough, I highly recommend using two mages and use their CC abilities against the dragon.

Also you can get Yusaris during Broken Circle, which gets a rather large damage bonus vs. dragons. if you've got a 2handed user.
If you're a Dual wielder and you have Return to Ostragar, you can get a dagger with similar bonus.

Funny how everybody says the dragon was difficult. Has this do with what difficulty level you play? Because the battle was a piece of cake on normal. I couldn't beat the doppelganger during the Gauntlet! I gave up on that fight and went to Ozammar first. After that quest I was much stronger and the doppelganger were dead in no time. Even Kolgrim was much more difficult. I died about 15 until I managed at last. I beat the dragon without dying once. All I had to do was tank him with Alistair and heal him while my mage and Morrigan just stood there dealing damage. The dragon paid no attention to anybody but the tank. Twice he changed position but once I was out reach again I could go on killing him nice and easy.
Maybe it's because I'm not used to these kind of games (Final Fantasy player *g*), but I thought the difficulty level was very unbalanced throughout the game. Just when I thought I got better and was beginning to figure out how things work, I'd run into an enemy that slaughtered me....
I couldn't beat the Archdemon. I had to switch to easy. Yes, embarrassing, I know. And yes, it IS easy that way. But how come normal difficulty is unbeatable for me??? The difference shouldn't be that grave, should it?! I felt the darkspawn would never stop pouring out... my allies were no help since they got butchered in a matter of minutes, too. I didn't have that many left, I have to admit. And I had only about 5 health and 7 lyrium potions...
I keep reading you can heal the allied army, but how?? Does the Xbox version have that?

Well part of the difficulty is what class you are playing and who you bring. For example, my Rogue I had zero trouble with the dopplegangers or Kolgrim, but the Dragon took a few tries.

Archie is all about strategy and the army you chose. I was a Arcane Warrior/Blood Mage and my strategy was simple. Mages in the very begining while Storm of the Century on the dragon and have everyone not range hang back while the ranged people go to town on the dragon. Once the mages are slaughtered when the darkspawn army gets called out, bring in either Dwarves or Werewolves(if you didnt get the Dalish) and have them focus on the army while you Balista the crud out of Archie. Finally, just run in and duke it out with the AD until it finally dies.

Yeah, level 10 is waaaaay too low for the Dragon. Just hold onto Kolgrim's horn and go level up at the Circle and Denerim, then come back.
In fact, if you go to denerim, you can have Wade make you some excellent leather armor that gives you alot of fire protection, if you picked up all the drake scales in the caves.

The various fights in the game require different tactics and thinking to beat. You can't expect beat them all the same way- I like that as a challenge. The High Dragon is fairly straightforward example of a single, large boss type fight, while the clones are a different kind of fight altogether, requiring high threat control and party management. My take on the high dragon? CC it as often as possible- petrify, cone of cold, paralyze...whatever it takes from your mage. Use the rest of the party to DPS as quick and as much as possible.

I too was slaughtered when I first fought the dragon, so I just went ahead and completed the Urn quest without fighting him.
Of course, before beating the game, I went back at level 19 and banged the gong. Handily defeated the dragon, and got the achievement too, oh yes!
I recommend doing something like that, it's groovy.
