Anders is Alistair without the whining. In other words, he's perfect.
He didn't get any proper character development in Awakening, and that's a big reason why it'd make sense and it'd be cool to see him again.

Anders whines when you take him to the final battle. Alistair complains when you don't (because I know his plan, oh yes, and he will not take my sacrificial choices away).
Alistair is chaste and makes fun of himself. Anders is probably a bit of a man **** and makes fun of everything but himself and his own desires. Alistair is silly but set on what he considers to be his "duty". Anders only stays with you in Awakening because it's a better deal than what the templars have planned.
Anyway, as much as I love them both, I think it's asinine to say they're so much alike.

I know that Merrill is taken as a given on these forums because of her appearance in the video, but keep in mind that we haven't officially announced her yet, either. As for the order and number of character announcements to come, for that you will have to wait and see. There is a Plan.

Actually, I have no idea. I'm just trying to head off the idea that this MMC must be the next announcement since you guys "already know" about Merrill.

though in one preview i believe they said merril's specialization was dalish pariah so i guess it would make sense to believe that she'd be a temporary/permanent companion at some point in the game.

This is why I hate these kind of threads; people come on (including a well respected forumite demon lady) and talk about Merrill, and Anders, and Nathaniel was the other one like they are absolutely confirmed companions and LIs.
And they completely totally are not.
Yes Merill is in the game but I am yet to see any of the so called "companion confirming" footage or screenshots of her. If I am completely honest given she is the assistant keeper of a dalish clan she doesnt make sense lorewise (given how xenophobic and tightnit the dalish are) for her to abandon her clan to follow some random human (even if he does become the Champion of Kirkwall).
If she is a companion there better be a really strong reason for her to be abandoning her clan; and not a lame ass Flemeth-Morriganesque "you need to go to learn all you can" excuse. That kind of thing would make me not want to get her as a companion.
And the people talking about "I totally saw Anders in the trailers - he is totally an LI".You dont know that. I didnt see Anders anywhere in any of the trailers.
I really wish people would stop talking about things (complaining or praising) as if they are officially confirmed for dead cert when they arent. Eugh.
