If you believe what gets written in Magazines (which may well be not be accurate for all we know), then she gets told to by the keeper. Just saying.FitScotGaymer wrote...
If I am completely honest given she is the assistant keeper of a dalish clan she doesnt make sense lorewise (given how xenophobic and tightnit the dalish are) for her to abandon her clan to follow some random human (even if he does become the Champion of Kirkwall).
As for if she's a companion or not, it's already been confirmed that mage Hawke can swap staves with Merrill, so she's at least a temporary companion. Even if it's not been "confirmed" by marketing.

I bet those from BioWare that post here regret it most of the time when they accidentally let something slip.

For example, you can share swords and shields between Aveline and a warrior Hawke, or staves between a mage Hawke and Merrill.

I really wish people would stop talking about things (complaining or praising) as if they are officially confirmed for dead cert when they arent. Eugh.
It's not a big deal. People get excited and speculate. It's when the speculation becomes self-referencing that it becomes problematic, because not everyone who comes here knows that self-referencing is occurring. Either way, no need to eugh too hard about it.

Just out of curiosity, do you find most of it rather amusing?

I bet Mr. Gaider gets satisfaction out of taking all our speculations into account and having the exact opposite happen in game. He feeds off our blood and tears remember?

I kinda like the speculation :< Most of the conversation we have here in the forum are speculation. Some really can be over the top, but other can be fun. If we didn't speculated about a character and talked only about what we know for sure, it would be a little boring. ._.
Also, without speculations, fans would cry much less.

That means we get a Qunari
Actually, adding a Qunari has some logic, cause the plot somewhat turns around them, well at least at some point, no?

Well, a dev said that we could switch Staff with Merrill if we wanted to so I took that as a given.David Gaider wrote...

We have less than two months before the game is released. I'm guessing that we'll get info in early Feb.
I know that Merrill is taken as a given on these forums because of her appearance in the video, but keep in mind that we haven't officially announced her yet, either. As for the order and number of character announcements to come, for that you will have to wait and see. There is a Plan.

Velanna was the Keeper's first too. And while she follows the Warden eventually, she didn't abandon her clan for that very purpose. It can be similar for Merrill.FitScotGaymer wrote...

Hey DG. (Why do some people call you Dinosaur Gaider out of interest? You dont seem to take it as rude so I presume you take it as a compliment or something?)
I dont mind speculation. I am all for speculation.
Personally I would really like to see Nathaniel in DA2 since we KNOW he was in Kirkwall during DAO and I quite liked him as a character from a writing standpoint.
Speculation is along the lines of...
"Ooooh, just seen a mage companion in the trailers. Think its Anders?"
"I really hope the Unannounced Male Mage Companion is Anders."
"Its looking really likely that Merrill is going to be a companion this game. yay!"
Its when that speculation becomes this...
"Anders its totally the Male Mage Companion. And I am going to romance him my first play thru!"
"Seen Merrill for 3 seconds in the new trailer. Ha! Totally called her being a companion LI!"
Thats not speculating thats spreading disinformation like in a communist or totalitarian state. Do you all live in Cuba or Libya or something?
Maybe its just my discomfort with lying but I find that sort of definitive statements that some folk have been guilty of making prettty horrible.

Hmm? People call him this way? I invented the nickname, same as Pirate Laidlaw, but I didn't knew other people called him this way.
