Thats the problem imho, they shouldn't be trying to drag people in from other genres by making the series into that genre. If they wanted to do that then make a spin off series within the DA universe for those people but keep original series true to the fans of the genre that made it so successfull in the first place because without them there probably wouldn't have even been a DA2 due to less money coming in.
So Planescape: Torment was a shameless attempt to drag in people from other genres?
Just asking...

Um, I think what Dragoonlordz is trying to say is "Other [more main stream] genres".
Planescape: Torment was an attempt to leverage the same technology as the BG games and the Intellectual property of Sigil owned by Wizards at the time. It wasn't a dumbing down as much as an expansion into another intellectual property using the same engine.
I think a more apt example would be the Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance series, which was an attempt to bring the Intellectual property of BG to a more main stream audience. This was accomplished by really REALLY reducing the elements of BG universe to absolute basics (read as Dumbed down A LOT).

You're completely missing my point.
Half of the posts in this thread are acting as if the inability to customize armor on your companions is the downfall of computer RPGs as we know them. And yet, despite the hysteria, this is hardly something brand new to the genre. Varying degrees of armor customization/manipulation have been on computer RPGs since the beginning of the genre. Torment itself had barely any - the protagonist himself could only add a single burlap robe to his outfit, which would promptly be removed the moment that you actually entered combat.
The various things that Bioware is doing in DA2 (including, but not limited to, the armor system) are hardly new and absolutely do not represent some great sell-out to the action gamers - despite what numerous Chicken Littles keep claiming.

I can only speak for myself when I say that I am concerned about the "Trend" that this represents. However, instead of being a "Chicken Little" and claiming that the sky is falling, I am merely stating that I am cautiously optimistic that Bioware will not let the trend go to far.
To me, The Absolutely BEST RPG is one where I create my Avatar. I select Race and appearance. I select his name and create his background. I select his/her gender. I select (to some degree or another) his/her attributes and skills. I guide his/her growth throught the game. I choose the equipment that he/she chooses to outfit themselves with and usually the same for his/her companions. Anything external that may also be going on in the game is (to a greater or lesser degree) less important. I am playing the role that I choose. I could do this in DA:O. I can do it in the Elder Scrolls games. i can do it in the BG series. And the list goes on. The loss of any one of these may not break the game but it does make it less than optimal TO ME.
What I know about DA2, I can't choose my Avatar. That is set. I can't set his race. From what I have read, the classes are made significantly more rigid, which is another change. If the Companions are as customizable as they were in ME2 (i,.e, not very much) I will see that as limiting as well.
All of these things "May" still make for a Great game. I am hopeful that it will. But if you draw a line through this behavior through several generations of games, we "May" end up with DA: Dark Alliance in a few years. which I would not be in favor of.
there is a big difference between seeing a trend and being cautious of it, and crying to the heavens "The sky is falling". I am doing one. Not the other.

Plus, let's give the art department some credit: For the most part, these designs are sweet.

Some people need to lighten up about changes in DA2. Change happens all the time with games. I admit there are some things I don't like about the changes namely no race creation, but this game still has great potential. I honestly am not a fan of Mass Effect, but some of the changes they made for the game seem to fit well and make sense. I hear people complaining about the dialogue wheel in DA2 that system makes more sense then reading a lot of answers word for word just to hear Hawke repeat them. You have to admit that makes sense. Also gameplay has improved a lot but still retains its tactical rpg style. I don't get how people can look at origins and say that slow boring style of fighting is better then real time, but I guess some people just like that and that is ok. It just hard for me to believe that some of these changes are causing such a fuss. People need to relax and just take the game for what it is and they might have more fun then they thought they would. Or maybe to not buy the game so you can stop complaining about it, because I for one am tired of it.
I agree. The graphic look a lot better, and so does the combat. I prefer characters like Hawke, the dialouge wheel, and I'm a bit more of an action rpg guy thatn a tactical rpg, and you can play both ways in Dragon Age 2.

just to clarify, I have played the Demo and am very excited about the game. I fully expect that it will be one of my Top games of the year. And I (only speaking for myself) do not anticipate that the changes (the armor system not the least of these) will make the game un-playable.
However, the only way DEVS will learn that certain trends bother players is if someone expresses this to them. While I really enjoyed ME2, the limited inventory options and character appearance optimization were not to my liking. it didn't break the game, but that aspect did detract from my experience. it is my hope that DA2 (and hopefully 3) will not continue along that trend line.
And if it did, without consumers expressing our dislike of the trend, then the fault would be ours. Bioware is a very good company and listen to their consumers. Take (my comments anyway) as merely giving feedback on aspects that may be less than to our liking. not that the game will fail simply because of this.

Hey talking on armor and weapons here. I've added runs/gems to weapons, but they dont get any glows. I put a fire rune/gem on my weapon, but it does glow with a flame. Anyone know whats up or was this done on purpose? I miss that effect from DA:O. Other than that, everything is pretty good.
It might be on purpose. How do you put them on anyway?

I really hope that you can change everyone's armor and weapons. The whole "there's only limited items, but a ton of upgrades" bull**** that they did in Mass Effect 2 drove me nuts. Half the point of the playstyle of an RPG is getting different items, weapons, and armor. Especailly with today's graphics where we can see how individual armor pieces look. I like the idea of being able to equip different things and being able to see them. Why change it other than laziness? As far as worrying about the fact that time transpires, in real life knights didn't change out their armor every couple of days, so that fact could be used to explain why they have the same armor in the future.
I have to admit that bothers me too.
