After I am finished with my rogue and my 2hand warrior I have decided to play with a mage. This will be my first time using a mage other than an AW i got to level 10 lol.
I am playing from an RP point of view, my rogue is the "ultimate" damage build, the 2 hand warrior is a fun build, so I have decided to do a playthrough where an invented character background defines the character, not what would be "best" (i dont want it to suck either haha.
So basically, my question to you is what spells are good for a mage. I am going to go for blood mage first, then spirit healer second spec, only for the health regen. I am definitely getting animate dead, and spell might, and all of blood magic. I have, at level 25 around 29 spells i can choose, minus 11 from the previously mentioned spells.
After that i am only buying from the entropy tree unless anyone tells me a spell that i have to take and i can somehow work into my character. Which spells are worth taking, which arent?
Party will consist of Leliana bard/ranger, DW sten and shale
Help?!
Necromancer build help?

ALWAYS take 'Forcefield', If you want 'Spell Might' then you might as well follow through with 'Blizzard' and 'Tempus' to unlock 'Storm of the Century'... this spell will easily out damage any rogue alive or dead! Sprinkle with some crowd control (the Glyphs, 'Paralysis Explosion' = best) and you are ready to rock.

ussnorway has a lot of good suggestions, though I can see where they'd be hard to justify from an RP standpoint.
Being as you're the only mage in the party, and don't want to necessarily use win-button spells, having access to some healing magic will be really helpful, and even in-character depending on your definition of necromancy. Up until the 3rd edition of D&D, necromancy spells were any spell that manipulated positive or negative energy, the energy of life and unlife, respectively. So if you're willing to work with that definition rather than just the standard defiler of graves, you have justification to take Heal and some of the Spirit Healer spells. (You can explain the spirit as having been bound into service by your Blood Mage, and the source of all your healing magic, if you prefer.)
Force Field is really good though, being able to take anyone, friend or foe entirely out of the fight for its duration is amazing.

Thanks to both of you, but im not buying ANY spells from the primal tree, it is too overpowered and doesn't fit into my character. But I do like the idea of manipulating the spirit so I will get some heals and forcefield.
But which spells from the Entropy tree should I take, im thinking Death Hex and Death Cloud for the spell combo (200+(2.0*spellpower)) so I was going to go

in entropy, ideas?
Side topic, how powerful/effective is blood magic? I have never used it so do i need to pump some con or can I go mostly spellpower? Finally, do sustainables still come out of mana or do they lower hps?

Already active ones like say the AW tanking buffs will continue to drain your mana.TheBigMatt90 wrote...

Remember that forcefield ONLY makes you immune to damage, not other types of spell effects (heal, buffs and threat) eg. your tank is in trouble and your heal is on cool down just have the tank taunt the boss then forcefield your tank... now toss a heal/ life ward on your tank as they become active.

Woo cool, big help then, thanks.
yeah i know, had it on my AW lol.
Should I put any points into Con or are they not needed? Can anyone answer any of my previous questions?

RE: Entropy. Couldn't tell you, I've almost never used Entropy spells. Pity, since the Hex chain is pretty awesome.
RE: Blood Magic. Upkeep for sustainable spells is in mana, including those that drain mana constantly, which is why the Blood Mage/Arcane Warrior build is so potent. Blood Magic is pretty nice in that it discounts your spells by 25%, 40% if you can get an item that has the "improves blood magic" property (they don't stack, however, so you only need one item. I suggest the Blood Ring you can get from the unsanctioned Proving combats). Blood Wound is amazing. If you can find some +Con gear, you can probably just pump Magic and survive.

Okay, yeah I have been looking and it is pretty sweet. As i have said, i know its not the highest dps in the game but I like a challenge
Sweet, thanks. I think i am going to use the belt from the Golems of Amgarrak DLC (Sash of Forbidden Secrets i think) as I already have it, and it is good. Thanks, i'll do my best
Thanks for the help guys, my laptop with DA:O on has died, so wont be playing till I can get it fixed, just hoping I can get my files back (i dont backup game files)

What I some times do whith my characters is start them off all nice and good. Then once my family gets murdered, betrayed, whatever I do the classic "need more power" to save people and let the fade demon grant me blood magic. Thats where it awakes the evil within. After that I quickly fill out the death spells and whatnot. So you have a nice balance of "good/bad" magics.

Yeah thats the way i was going to explain it, however i decided to be an a-hole from the beginning and explain it as control over spirits (positive and negative) Unfortunately my laptop with the DA:O saves (and well everything really) has possibly corrupted so im going to have to do everything again, when i eventually get the laptop back, and im hoping that I can register the game again if everything is gone =/

Bump:
For the End-Game gear how does this sound:
Staff of the Magister Lord (pwnage staff)
Vestements of the Seer (are they the best choice? im going for a maximum destruction Blood mage)
Black Hand Gauntlets (with the Staff i have the spirit damage at the 30% cap)
Magus War Boots (so i can take a few hits, not that i should be with two warriors to tank)
Blood-Gorged Amulet (for the massive Con boost, meaning i can pile everything into magic. If you disagree show me a better neck
)
Key to the City
Lifegiver (Both boost my stats, allow me to cast more spells, increase healing to me, cant find anything better tbh)
I can get another Lifegiver for my tank due to the shop repop thing
What do you think? Think there is some gear I am desperately missing and stupidly overlooked? Im not wearing a helm as they look rediculous, and I have a tat on my face that makes me look scary so...no
