Just look into Duncan eyes, he's saying the game will be epic. Play it or he shaves!

I think you should rent it before buying if you are unsure about the combat. It is tactical rather than button mashing, but I think you misunderstand the community's use of those terms; Fable 2 had button mashing combat rather than tactical because you could just mash buttons until the enemies die (a tactic I used in my playthrough of Fable 2). DA:O is tactical because your role as the player is about positioning the characters, giving attack and ability usage orders, and managing resources (such as mana and hit points, healing powers and spells, character's stamina and, more indirectt combat-wise, character progression choices.

Yes, you can issue an order to your fighter to hack at an enemy and then watch them fight. You will, however, lose the game if this is your only tactic. You must use positioning and the items and abilities of your party to get by any but the most basic battles.

The only thing that bugs me in the footage is the run animation during combat, why they all run like tribal highlanders o_0

Thanks for the thoughts.  My challenge is that, in the videos, it actually looks like the fighting is button mashing and not tactical at all!

Maybe I'm misusing the terms?  To me Fable 2 (for instance) is tactical since you have to plan a way to cause the most damage to the enemy while taking the least damage yourself.  From what I see in the DA videos, it's not tactical because you just run up to the enemy, and the two of you just start hitting each other until one falls over.

I've only seen the vids and not any of the website stuff (or forum chatter) so maybe I'm just misinterpreting what's happening in the videos?

In DAO you don't click or press a button for every attack.  You simply press a button once to command one of your crew to attack and they will keep on attacking until they are dead the enemy is dead or you give another command (something like shield bash).    So even if two guys are just sitting there swinging at each other only one button has been pressed: the attack command (there's no button mashing involved).  What makes the game tactical is the fact that party positioning and giving the right commands at the right time are neeeded to overcome difficult encounters (atleast I hope this is the case).  Unlike in ME you have complete control of all 4 four players in your party so there are lots of commands to give and therefore lots of options on how to approach any given situation.

*sighs happily* I prefer pause and play combat. I have found in most first person shooters, I have horrible aim. In these games, I don't have to worry about that!

I'll add my 2 cents: unless you've played games with this style of combat, it's probably not that easy to tell what's actually happening from the videos, especially when a lot of the time the people demoing the game aren't really paying close attention to what they're doing. It might not look that exciting when you're not playing, but there's actually quite a bit going on.

If you like fantasy RPGs, as well as a good story, I'd ignore the people who say this isn't the game for you. I play all types of more twitch-based games, such as Oblivion, or hybrid shooters like Mass Effect, and I also find this type of combat a heck of a lot of fun as well. I find this style of gameplay way more satisfying because of the tactical thinking that goes into managing a party of 4, and reacting to all the attacks your enemies are throwing at you. It's not boring at all.
