...Or lack thereof.

The Qunari we see in the trailers have tattoos that appear to signify that they belong to the same group, and their leader is essentially confirmed to be an Arishok. However, there appears to be very little worn in for protection. We see muscle bound men charge right into battle with only pants and weapon in hand. I can understand if these soldiers feel that there is no need to to armor themselves after seeing the Destiny trailer, and yet I feel like there is still some sort of recognizable hierarchy. Take the Arishok and his shoulder pads, and what appears to me like the common soldier (ones with no shirt). Compare these two groups with to the three in this picture behind the Arishok http://xbox360.ign.c...?page=mediaFull . So is there something important that the Qunari place on shoulders at all? (Really only the devs can answer that though).

Edit: HA I didn't mean it to sound like that :innocent:, but it is funny. "...with only pants and weapon in hand"

Yes. Qunari shoulders are broad, and make good targets. Thus they cover them.

With how hunched over they are, their shoulder plates will a good part of their upper body as well.

Yeah... so why don't these Qunari cover their shoulders xbox360.ign.com/dor/objects/80342/dragon-age-ii/images/dragon-age-2-going-rogue-20101025022711416.html ? These guys appear to be grunts, and the Qunari that do were shoulder pads don't protect their vital organs. To me at least  that suggests the possibility that it signifies rank
rather than practicality.

I think the one thing you're forgetting is this is a video game, and the "rule of cool."

The higher level an enemy gets on the scale from grunt to boss, the more visually imposing they will appear. Thus the tattoos and chains and horns and armor etc.

Not every single detail has to be explained away in the game as some sort of cultural relevance or whatever.

That's more than Isabela can boast.

I'm perturbed about the whole lack of armor thing myself, the Qunari are supposed to clad in glittering steel or some such in one of the Codex Entries.

It could be a cultural thing. Only the most worthy or skilled soldiers survive, the Qun will protect the faithful... Things like that.

Retcons happen. Deal with it.

How is it not logical? The creators of the original lore decided the original lore was no longer appropriate and too constrained for where they wanted to take the game. So they changed it. What else is there to say, other than get used to it?

Simply dismissing this serves no purpose, after all this is speculation. The new design of the Qunari may adhere to an arbitrary "rule of cool", but if this is the military of the Qun then their rank will likely adhere to a visual design as well. Plus with the stated intent of the dragon age team to expand on the Qunari it is worth noting how they have changed and what we can expect from them in the future.

Maybe this is not the Qunari army referred to in the Codex?

Maybe these Qunari are like the berserkers in D&D? Warriors that charge into battle with little or no armor.

Perhaps, the only problem is that according to Sten Qunari don't waste resources, and "few things are more valuable than lives". Plus they may not need to use armor. That destiny trailer shows one getting his stomache shishkobobbed and he still fights  to gain the upper hand.

Actually that makes me think that the reason the qunari are not "glittering" in armor may have to do with what Sten says. Qunari do not waste resources, so they commit what they think they will need. If their presence in Kirkwall is not considered by their generals as a paticualry important operation, then there is no need to "waste resources" on like armor. :wizard:

ENCHANTMENT (they may have runes engraved into what little armor they have, or perhaps even runes engraved into their own bodies, don't judge a foe solely based on their armor, or lack of it).

i think the Qunari in the first screen are mages, what with the chains and their faces covered ( perhaps so they can't talk). it fits how Sten described how they treat their mages, at least to me.

That.... is actually kind of interesting. It does kind of fit and may their oppression kind of shows in their hunched positions. Might also explain why I've never seen those guys with weapons in any screens, if they have magic then it is unlikely the would be trusted with weapons.

yeah the hunched positions is sort of what sparked that thought for me. they seem more like prisoners than soldiers, granted, i say that with not much certainty, as you can't get context from a screen capture like that. but IMHO it fits with what Sten said about mages being treated like beasts.

So we have a "Deal with it" Argument & a "A wizard did it" argument, I'll just ignore those.

I can get behind the "waste of resources" banner that kind of makes since.

So that would mean that the leader isn't an (the?) Arishok, but an Arvaarad?

Gaider did say that we would see Saarebas in DA2...

I hope you're right, Black_Warden. That could explain the lack of armor.

I have to put my two cents behind the 'cultural argument' where the Qunari have a cultural tendancy to save resources for things more important than armor. The idea that this depiction of Qunari would just be a 'rule of cool' seems too arbitrary for something as high-quality as Dragon Age. The series of Dragon Age is too well made to simply leave things like uniform unexplained.

In a world where magic exists, it seems stupid to ignore it as a possibility. Or did you deny claims of Morrigan and Wynne's existence and mod the game to skip circle tower?

Except for the fact that we can confirm that he is an Arishock the same way we confirmed the existence of Orison, where his armor/look is listed as "Arishock" on that xbox avatar page. And there is still the fact that in the rise to power trailer we see qunari that do not have those chains, wield weapons and sport a helmet and metal shoulder armor.

Though I am also finding myself agreeing with Black_Warden about those being mages at this point.

You know what doesn't float? Steel. And Kirkwall's a harbor city...just saying...
