Hell the boats might be better camouflage if they pretend to be traders.

The qunari surround Kirkwall, laying siege to it.
The harbor is lightly defended, as they expect any attack that comes from water would involve ships and the guards there could just run and tell everyone. Or the king is a nutter and that's what he thinks.
The qunari send in a sizeable force to swim into the harbour. They overcome the defenses there and then make their way into the city to throw open the gates, set fires and whatnot.
I'm pretty sure I read a Conan story once with that exact same plot.

I think people are taking Mike's post too seriously. His post was more for humor's sake then an actual explanation as to why the qunari aren't wearing plate. (I hope)

ASS-U-ME nothing until we play the game or read reviews.

Now if Qunari society is actually as it was described, then the notion that "steel doesn't float" being the reason for their lack of armor is a bit...off-putting. Armor may not float but that's never stopped armored men on ships from landing and stepping off of their boats to fight. I don't see the Qunari fearing the possibility of drowning over being fully equipped for battle.
The other idea is that these could be rogue Qunari, detached from the main settlements in some way. Perhaps there are broken tribes of Qunari? I suppose the only true answer is that we shall see in March.

If the Qunari in question are trying for a surprise attack and they have any numbers at all it's perfectly reasonable to think they would travel light if they didn't want the jig to be up. Armour is heavy, bulky, not easy to lug around and noisey.
(Now that doesn't explain why our own group can carry 15 sets of armour at once.)

An amphibious assault force would not wear metal armour, and i doubt a qunari could find armour that fits in a human city (especially without being noticed).
Except the many throughout history who have. They don't need to wear their armor en route. Dock (or get close to docking), put armor on, charge!
Considering the layout of Kirkwall's harbor, they'd probably have to sneak in under a false flag (pretending to be merchants or diplomats, for instance).
It takes a very long time to put on a full suit of plate armor. Not very effective if you're launching a surprise attack. They'd get caught with their cuisses down, so to speak.

Anyway, I noticed the other day that that qunari leader guy has 3 square earrings. At least I think that's what they are. And kind of a wide neck that kind of looks like gills? Maybe they are marines? Maybe.

Edited out the folders on my desktop. Haha.

The way I'm imagining it is that this scene is from the docks, and these guys are protecting their ship, or something like that, from whatever mischief Hawke and Isabella are up to. Since the Qunari don't waste resources, it makes sense that they wouldn't give sailors anything other than what they see as the bare minimum needed to protect a ship from pirates, or other ill-intentioned people, and that means a weapons for each sailor, and maybe the captain would get some armour
tl:dr = they're sailors, not soldiers

This is very funny!
Kind of strange they dont bring some sort of armor with them, I too think this is just the "cool" factor.
Might be an explination in the game though. looking forward to hear about this magical transformation and newfound shall we say hatred for using armor. Maybe even mages are accepted or even the new ruling class among them....

Indeed. It would be interesting if the qunari weren't invading, but establishing a presence in the area.

Also, Seheron is a jungle, do we have any examples of civilizations living on jungle islands who fight in metal armor? Awfully hot and humid. And since they're giants... well, I fear if I try bringing their surface area to volume ratio into it with regards to thermoregulation I may fail biology forever. Though those giant horns may help them... *mumble*

Presence, then why bring mages and not warriors or at least some guards along (maybe they have but we havent seen them yet) ?
Anyway hopefully there will be some clarification when the game is realesed. Right now we can only speculate, but you have to admit....looks pretty suspicious though. No ?
I mean this change in the looks is to define DA series from what i gather, and the Qunari is no where recognizeable from any description we ever heard. In fact now everything we "know" about them seems to be tossed out the window. Thats what it looks to me.
Time will tell i guess.

They seem to be doing just that in what looks like the Kirkwall throne room. Sneaky bastards
About the "earings", if you look at his ear you'll find what looks like a gold trinket on the outlining his ear. Those earings look attached to it. Mayhaps that is a sign of his station... personalized objects. Personal items do somewhat contrast the ideal of Qunari denying the self.

That gold bit does kind of like it is fitting over his ear, doesn't it? How odd. Ear armour, but bare chest. Is the red definitely tattoos? Could it be some kind of magic or ward or something?
I just looked up the qunari concept art for DAII and the concept art qunari doesn't appear to have gills. I think, in front of this qunari's ear, is light coloured hair, but what is behind his ear? Maybe I'm imagining it.
(The qunari are so my favourite race in the game.)

Uh-huh.... Gills may play in their favour if they swim to Kirkwall for sure, only they would be flabergasted when they come to a fairly large conundrum when they reach land. After all being able to not suffocate on land is kind of hard when you have gills.
As far as tattoos go, I think they merely designate a soldier. It could litrally be THE "bare" minimum to show who is a soldier of the Qun.
