I'm getting ready to make a mage character to round out the stuff I want to do before DA2 comes out and I am wonder how to set up my second mage for my party.

I'm going to be running mostly Primals w/ Blood Mage and Spirit Healer for Origins and going mostly for damage and being the back up healer for the party.

I'm wondering mostly what I should do for making a supporting mage that will be taking on most of the healing duties

Spirit Healer/ BM or Shifter (no talents really needed for either) are good back-ups. Arcane warriors are terrific for the warden, but seem to require more personal care when granted to companions.

I'm going with Blood Mage/Spirit Healer for Origins and adding Battlemage to that when I import to Awakening.

Party in Awakening pretty much doesnt matter thanks to infinite respecs.

Party in Origins sorta matters in this run because I'm not going to making the good choices and I have to leave some party members behind.

Tentative plans are to run, Me, Morrigan(Support/Healer), Zevran, and Alistair/Loghain.

Why Morrigan? I know you probably don't want to have redundancy between Wynne and your own PC Spirit Healer, but she's also the best set up for a support mage. Morrigan's pretty much set up to be a damager.

Of course, this is all for the vanilla game, without respec mods. If you've got a respec mod, never mind! </Emily Litella>

Because Morrigan will have a mess of Hexs to use by time I get her into the party because of me using the Duncan glitch for exp. Usually by time I get a level 10 or so character out of Ostagar, Morrigan already has several hexes, and I could start pushing heal and glyphs onto her to back up what she already has. Cant use mods because I'm on consoles.

Also SH redundancy isnt a concern as much as not getting caught with my hand in the evil cookie jar thanks to Wynne.

I find that a healing support mage can do well with the glyphs, and also incorporate nature damage.

I have Wynne setup to cast Glyph of warding on Alistair when he is attacked by melee, and glyph of paralysis if she or my main damage dealing mage is attacked by melee.

I have both of these up top of the tactics, so she will cast the ward initially, and then she will start healing as they are on cooldown. So that works good.

Regarding nature, you can do the same, put Spellbloom up top of tactics to be cast when she or the other mage drops below 90% mana. And you can have her cast the tier 4 swarm when an enemy goes below 50%.

I like this, because the bloom is cast straight away before she needs to heal, together with Alistair receiving the ward.

And the swarm is a tier 4 fire and forget damage spell, no cast time and can be easilly squeezed into the repetoire of a mage that is mostly not doing any damage. Undead are immune to it, but then again there is no friendly fire or huge AoE, so it can be used in just about every fight without consequence or having to pause. Most of the tier 4 damage spells are more situational infact. I personaly love controlling my rogue, backstabbing and playing "follow the swarm)

Many say to put Wynnes healing up top, but then the other spells won't be cast. If you put these spells up top she will cast them at the start, and then heal while they are on cooldown. So I find this to work pretty well. You have to make some choices as you can only have a few spells above your healing of course.

You can do the same with the auras she already has. Heroic Offense is not bad to cast on a cunning rogue, when his stam drops below 90%. Defensive aura on Alistair (I don't have this in tactics as the Ward is plenty enough in almost all fights, but in some it is good). Mass rejuvenation just as the combat starts, as soon as someone drops below 90% stam or mana.

I have this so that Wynne cast mass rejuv, and my main mage cast spellbloom, and it works pretty well without having to pause all the time. And they both do it before the fight really breaks out. So in most fights I just taunt with Alistair, then control Zevran for backstabbing. Only having to pause and use a mage if there is something I specifically need to CC.

You know what's really fun? 1 tank + 3 mages. Try that out in some of the smaller battles (ie. Chanter's board quests) where not having a rogue won't really be big deal. Lotsa fun if you set up the tactics right.
