I LMAO'd when I saw this on RPG Codex: "What exactly is happening to the RPG genre in modern gaming?_ Let lead designer Mike "Something Awesome" Laidlaw shed some light on it."

I think Mr Laidlaw got the short stick this year when it came to nick names and puns.

Hehe- in the credits for DA2 they need to go like Obsidian did with New Vegas' credits when you have the Wild Wasteland perk and add in goofy nicknames  and quotes for everyone.

Longest credits in the history of the world.  :D  I normally watch credits the 1st time I complete a game, the FONV ones were epically long.

did anything happen after the credits?

anyway back on topic, is it possible to further a relationship with someone who could be an LI without them becoming an LI?  Are there divergent paths to take with characters?

There were in Origins, so I hope they kept that in DA2. It was one feature I really disliked about ME2: The romancible characters simply stop talking to you unless you romance them. DAO's 'friendship' path was really welcome in that respect.

Same here. It was particularly annoying with Garrus and Tali, who are supposed to be your old friends. You'd think they'd have more to talk about with youImage IPB
I bet DA2 will still have friendships, like in DAO, because of the whole friendship/rivalry scale thing. It would be harder to implement that if it was just associate/rivalry.

Based on 5 minutes of viewing, like I said. Which means my opinion on the show is about as informed as half the opinions on these forums. Okay, maybe a quarter. ;)

Hahahahahahahahaha!  Very well done, sir.  Very well done.

Like reach and flexibility? Or how the linking of enviro-suits signals a desie for intimacy and how a certain someone has never trusted anyone enough to do that? But to be honest, though I agree with you I already felt like I knew Garrus and Tali fairly well (well, I knew Garrus, Tali didn't say much in ME1). I was more annoyed with the new characters like Jack, who basically just clams up without really dealing with any of her issues unless you fall into some crazy romance. Her romance was a bit odd in itself, seeing as all M!Shepard did was basically talk to her, and I didn't think simply talking to someone qualified as romantic overtures.

RE: DA2 I'm willing to bet they're still in. Particularly since they've stated that at least some (maybe all?) romances can work on both friendship and rivalry paths. It will be interesting to play out the differences there. This also makes me wonder exactly how many scenes the individual companions will have though. If we only really have 6 (+sibling, +Sebastian), and they are all tied to the plot, they can hopefully do them in-depth.

With the Tali thing, after she confesses about the enviro-suit linking, she no longer talks to you unless you choose to romance her. Which is a shame. All of the ME2 companions could've used some evening out with the romance/friendship thing though. I thought something similar with Jack - why can't my femShep help her work through her issues too, when all she's doing with maleShep is talking about them and then hugging?

But anyway, about the whole tied-to-the-plot thing, I also hope it means we can see them in-depth. Also, that it makes them more directly involved with the plot. I mean, I really liked Sten and Leliana, but you could just walk on by them in Origins. My brother didn't even recruit them because he didn't realise he could (then again, he just breezed through DAO). And then once you have them, they don't have any real link to the rest of the plot. I'm looking forward to seeing all the characters explored thoroughly in DA2, particularly with ten years to get to know them.

There is, of course, a flip-side to this.  Characters directly tied to the plot means that you're  forced to  take them along on many occasions.  I'm personally fine with this, but we know that many people aren't.   Remember in DA:O when you're in the Deep roads with your chosen party searching for Branka, then you get  to the Anvil  of the Void map and then... Boom.  the party arbitration screen comes up and you HAVE to take Oghren along, meaning one member of your previously chosen party has to stay behind whether you like it or not?

I feel pretty optimistic that DA2 will go into friendships without being a LI.  It was annoying in ME2 where you couldnt really resolve a lot of issues of your squadmates without romancing them.

What bugged me about that was that it didn't make any sense. Is he supposed to have been tagging along behind you the whole time?

Except Leliana just wouldn't take the hint. Geez how many times do I have to tell her I just want to be friends.

Right.  If they'd allowed for a deep roads camp (which would have been really convenient), that would be one thing.  But in the absence of that they probably should have just made you take him throughout the deep roads.  I guess those of us who really care about it probably already had him with us, so it was just a weird screen that popped up for no apparent reason.  Not terrible, but probably not the way I would have gone with that.

I really hope there is an interview coming up that will shed light on what our companions will be like. That would be awesome.
Because I really love these new companions, especially Aveline, and I think I'm going to fall in love with them... out of game and in-game.;)

out of game?

You people have dirty minds.
What I meant is that I love these characters as a gamer, but not IN love.
And by in-game.. well, I'm pretty sure you guys knew what I meant by that.

Request for more gameplay specific information has been noted. Thanks for the feedback. It's coming reasonably soon, probably in more ways than expected.

Anyone else think this means we'll be seeing a Dragon Age 2 demo out in February?

I'm thinking Character Creator, if I can be honest. Probably implemented in the same way, that it was in DA:O.

I was originally thinking this. But we could also get the teaser gameplay as well. Which would start a firestorm.

That is officially my favorite video game analogy.

You feel a lot worse puking up good scotch though if you over do it.  Anyway, what manner of person would get drunk on good scotch!  Sip and savour!

That is why cheap apple wine is the best - it tastes the same both ways, when you take it in and on its way out.

This

I played ME2 one time and that was after DA:O. My poor little F!Shep feelt lonely with no one to talk to. The lack of friendship feelt much more obvious when finishing DA:O before ME2. Maybe they are not aiming for the same group with these two games so perhaps there won't be a friendship path in Me3 but if they would have one I would be very happy. A little more talking overall, but that's just for me, when my shepard romanced Thane it went so quickly from just talking to whops-apparantly we're toghether that I feelt that they must have done alot of talking away from the camera  Image IPB   Feel like I got to know Alistair, Zevran and Leliana much better when my warden romanced them.

2) Bring the classes into parity.

In a world where mages can lob balls of exploding fire using only their will, it was dischordant to have warriors and rogues who moved slowly and carefully. We could have absolutely addressed this by changing mages to make them more realistic, but we chose to instead give Warriors and Rogues more personality, since it added more visual flair to the game, and created a stronger identity for each class.

I'd rather you have gone the other way around and toned mages down. Alas, such is the problem of fusing the nuker and the healer in a single class, while leaving the utility and the metal ball separate: the balance of power is clearly skewed.
I just hope archers are not as over-the-top as dualwield rogues, so I can actually play as such. Then again, what you call "visual flair" I call "facepalm bait". Different strokes for different tastes, I guess.

A lot of people mentioned they missed Leliana and Sten. Sten I can maybe understand because he's in a cage and not very talkative and all, but Leliana offers to join you TWICE. If a player can't get a hint it's their own faultImage IPB

I'd prefer having certain characters "forced" on you and have them tied more in the plot that having everyone be completely optional and killable just for the sake of it. Alistair and Morrigan seemed much more fleshed out and their romances more meaningful than Zevran and Leliana because they were tied closely to the plot and you had to make some hard choices about them.

That's unfortunate but... playing an RPG and NOT sticking your nose in every building is just not the way it's meant to be playedImage IPB (especially since Morrigan and Alistair kept mentioning the inn as a place to get info)

Thanks for posting those OP :) I always love reading and watching interviews.

i'll also never understand why people are so negative to the devs. :/

it's one thing to sit there and say you don't like something, but there are plenty of times where posts are borderline flames. Do people really have nothing else to do but be a ****** parade, especially when the large majority of their target audience doesn't give a damn about what they have to say?

David Gaider, when you said "shades of gray is a cop out" on rpgcodex what did you mean by it?
