I think there’s a couple less [characters] than the potential spread in
Origins.
I am surprised no one is talking about this. I am kind of surprised and dismayed, but at the same times I don't think DA1 would have been any worse had they cut Leliana and Zevran. Still, it's difficult to understand how they mean this exactly.
DA1 had 10 potential companions (including Shale), that should mean DA2 will have ~8.
but... who are they counting in DA2, are dog and Sebastian Vael counted inspite of them being "bonus characters"? Do Carver and Bethany count as two characters even though you can only use one of them in a playthrough? Potentially, we could already know pretty much every playable character in the game, with the exception of maybe a "secret companion" thing like Loghain, who may show up at the end or something.

For this one what we’ve tried to do is give him the sense that your companions actually have their own space, their own role, their own kind of agendas in the city of Kirkwall. There are moments when you come into the bar and you’ll find one companion chatting with another. You start talking to them, and then they’re talking about something the two of them have done. Then they’re like, “Oh hey Hawke, how are you doing,” and one of them gets up and leaves and you continue on. It creates this dynamic between the companions that says these are people. They have friendships within their own group. They’ve gotten to know people through you. As the game progresses, as that decade plays out, they start to have their own rivalries and things like, “I did that favor for you like you asked” kind of stuff. And you’re like, “Wow, this is neat.” These feel like much more realized people simply because they have their own place and goals within the city.
Translation: the game doesn't revolve around you anymore like any proper game should.
Extrapolation: companions will complete quests for you if you take too long and keep the loot and experience for themselves and they can even become Champion themselves if you're too much of a chump.
Conclusion: worst game ever, canceling pre-order now.
Translation: I want DA2 to be a clone of DA1 with different skins.
Extrapolation: People are never happy with anything you give them.
Conclusion: you are a hapless troll.

I don't understand why Mike Laidlaw, a month away from the game going gold (or less), seems to not actually know for sure how many companions are in the game.
Well, I'm either a drooling moron, or didn't feel like giving a definite answer.
I expect that people's opinions of me will lean them toward one answer or another, as is often the case.

I think you're just tricky. Unlike David Gaider, you do not feed off of our tears and misery. You feed off of our confusion.

If we can only find the *right* gifts in the Free Marches, we can raise our score enough with him that he may agree to unlock those talents for us....
Maybe there is a forum side-quest....
EDIT: chances are good saying numbers or too many details would go against the marketing plan for the game release.....

Well they aren't real people so of course not but the fact is it will give greater emotional resonance to the player.
Just because a character is fictitious doesn't mean they can't have actual depth to their character. That's what allows to relate to a character and understand better what they are and what they're going through. Scenes such as party banter, while sometimes doing a little bit for development aren't the primary method of driving that character and at times are often redundant seeing as what is taken from these moments is almost always shown through other means, generally in direct discussion with the PC. That was what I was trying to show, that unless BioWare drastically changes their style in DA2, no matter how they present these banter types moments it's still going to have little relevance in actual character development. It's going to look nicer, add to the atmosphere, give the companions a bit more life to themselves, it's going to be great. But it's actual impact, not much more then the banter we've had in every other BioWare game.

MadCat, I just think you undervalue it. but its just a matter of
opinions at the end of the day. I actually respect your
opinion.
I don't know, you were lumping me in a very generalized "nay sayer" category and made the claim I was taking some easy road for not giving a way to improve a system I actually like. Didn't seem like you thought I simply "undervalued" it (Had that argument with Exile already) or that you respected my opinion. But fair enough, water under the bridge.

I'm a believer in the "less is more" approach when it comes to companions. The less you parade out the more time and resources you could devote to a single companion. I'd love to see what David and co. could spin if they just had to worry about enough characters to fill up a party (3-4). The story behind them, the conversations, the depth, their impact on the story and the game, all of that could be amplified. The more you add, the more you thin it out, the more diluted it gets and the less you start caring about every individual. Choices are great and do increase replayability, but I'd love see a game where they only worry about a couple of companions.

I too enjoy games that are released before any real information about them is available.
I mean hey man, I respect your right to do what thou wilt, and let's be fair, when I bought Wasteland in 1989 I had no idea about., well, anything really, other than that the box looked cool and it was made by a team that I trusted.
So totes kudos for "kicking it old school" and choosing to reveal pretty much nothing substantial whatsoever about this game, but I don't think you're going to hit the stated "10 million sales" goal that way.

I, too, enjoy completely subjective reasoning in the light of hard evidence to the contrary. It makes lul.
I can link you to the DA2 website if you like. Or any of the previews.
I mean, seriously, what do you consider "real information"? We know TONS about Dragon Age 2 (there's even a stickied thread on the subject). You're honestly going to go with the "there's no info" gameplan because he chose not to make a very specific storyline/gameplay reveal?

This close to release, I would expect:
- Number of, names of, and vague backstories for, all companions.
- Idea of the overarching plot and how it connects to Origins beyond "Hawke becomes the Hero/Tyrant of Kirkwall" and "Hawke does not save the world"
- Detailed breakdown of all class specs and skills.
- In-depth information about how the battles will work out, not just a demo of a fight against a few thugs in a generic alley which demonstrates very little beyond "you don't have to ever pause, but if you want to drag out these trash mob fights by pausing, knock yourself out". This would include at least vague confirmation or denial of whether the Origins tradition of "fight a few generic Hur/Genlocks every twenty feet that provide no actual challenge or in any way enhance the gaming experience" will be continued
- Names of voice actors
- Absolute confirmation of the vague hint that there might be an actual male homosexual romance that is deeper than Zevran
Etc.
It's just an industry standard now, with games costing so much and gamers buying fewer games, it's nice to be informed. The preview information for Mass Effect 2 was extremely well-done in this regard. I feel, particularly with the insane number of pre-order bonuses (including one that ended months before street date aka months before any reviews of the finished product were in) that I'm being told to buy this game on faith.
As a consumer, I find being told to buy things on faith insulting and greedy, particularly things that cannot be returned. If I buy Dragon Age 2 on release day and absolutely hate it, I can't return it, period. I'm beginning to believe more and more that the devs want so many day one purchases because the word of mouth after people have actually played it will be not so good (and don't insult me by quoting previews, there has literally never been a negative preview of a AAA title).

I would expect this before the end of a pre-order cycle. Asking more of people is just telling them to put blind faith in a company's product. That isn't even remotely logical.
