I went back to an earlier save to sort of cheat to get the reaver specialization and I only JUST managed to bring myself to despoil the ashes, even though the only reason I was even there in the first place was to do just that. BioWare really did an amazing job with the writing of this game. My mage originally started as a selfish character but I found her developing into more of a helpful, considerate person after she left the circle tower and was exposed to all the troubles and suffering in the world even though I had made a concious decision to make her selfish and forsaw no changes to that nature.

I freaking love this game.

Yeah I know... it was disappointing that you had to go through all that trouble for Arl Eamon who REALLY isn't necessary to attack Loghain... in all do respect, you could have just set up the Landsmeet yourself.

Or just have Bann Tigan do it, his dialog indicates he was up to replacing Eamon and supporting you if the worst happened.
You know just quietly slit Eamon's throat while everyone's away... accidents happen right? Though Alistair would probably go beserk.

"This comatose man accidentially slit his throat while I sat next to him"?
I don't know, some people might get suspicious.

Too bad there isn't an option to pilfer the Urn and take it with you.

Yeah. Why can't we steal the ashes?

Almost the opposite here, I started out evil impared and noticed that I was becoming more ruthless by the minute, though I still found it exceedingly difficult to bring myself to defile the ashes for the Reaver.

"Well I was just helping Eamon.. uh.. shave, you see. Trim that big ol' beard of his a little, then there was an earthquake and my hand slipped on the razor and.... yes, there was an earthquake. Of course you didn't feel it, it was a very small earthquake.. localised entirely within the Arl's bed chamber in fact. Most unfortunate."

Maybe the ashes are such powerful healing items that they cure the Grey Warden taint in you and Alistair if you had enough exposure to them.

In which case the archdemon couldn't be defeated and Ferelden is screwed.

Probably not the case, but an interesting thought, no?

Ah, OK, that sounds reasonable enough, you could also improve that story by ordering Oghren to fart, or telling Shale that there's a pigeon in the room when you do the deed.

In that case I propose we start an experiment by stuffing the urn down the damn things throat, either it chokes on it or it heals. :o

As a Human Female Noble Rogue/ Ranger I chose to kill the cultist after going through the speech of Andraste reborn they consorted with possibly the next arch demon after all. And my main intrest was strictly to kill Howe oh so painfully and slow. Rograin or Logain I just wanted dead for his betrayal, funny I never liked him from the moment i saw him he reminded me of a weasel. And It is never a good idea to ****** off the gods whether you follow them or not. but i saved before going into where the guardian was aand then blow the horn just for arguments sake that high dragon took about 2 mins to wipe us out and I don't have winne in my party or as a commpaion. I havent been to wherever she is. I did red cliff and most of denarim and then ashes so i am only lvl 10 lol

The point is, I can't remember a game where I actually felt guilty in real life for what I've done in game. I'm also an atheist, but it got me to thinking, "what if that was like, The Shroud of Turin?" It wouldn't mean much to me, but my decision to taint such an artifact would affect millions of people.

That was my comparison exactly. I did it once for the specialization and the achievement and never have done it since :P

Just FYI, though I'm sure most know this - you can say you'll taint the Ashes and then not do it. When Kolgrim had his two mages at that first fight, I couldn't beat him for the life of me. (Had no problem on my second run-through but I learned a lot about party management from my first go.) Tried to fight him again on the way into the Temple, lost because of the number of henchies he had. But if you chose not to taint the Ashes, the fight gets a lot easier (at least it did for me) because he's down to two melee henches and himself, which was doable for me.

That's the route that my mostly knightly character took, though how knightly it is to lie to the cultist about doing what he wants is up for questioning, I suppose. Call it crafty. :-P

I didn't even realize that's how you unlocked the reaver spec. Every time I encountered Kolgrim I channeled my inner Minsc and shouted "Evil meet sword. SWORD MEET EVIL!!!!!!!!!!" God I miss Minsc and Boo.

I did it on my first playthrough because I couldn't kill handle the mages in the end of the Dragons lair and because I wanted to see what the reward was, it really did make me feel uneasy especially hearing their plan to take over Ferelden. This really felt like the greatest evil in the game besides the Archdemon itself.

Everytime since i have preserved the ashes because 1. It's not my place to decide their fate and 2. because Kolgrim really does a good job of seeming like a crazy cult leader that will eventually create some kind of dictatorship and torture many people.

To me, the whole storyline seems to be mankind repeating it's mistakes. The Tevinter Magister Lords decided to worship High Dragons because they couldn't handle a God who didn't show his power and look how that ended. 5 Blights to date and countless lives lost.

Awesome storyline.

I was playing sort of city Elven freedom fighter, a flawed, deeply scarred person. He was leaning toward more evil, more practical paths. He also had a deep hatred of the Chantry for, as he saw it, the slavery and betrayal of his people. However, when I reached the Urn, I found myself facing a conundrum. I ended up creating two saves, one of him tainting the ashes as a form of vengence, them moving on to become increasingly embittered, turning into a downright evil person, destroying the Dalish and sacrificing his father.. In the other save, he was touched by what he encountered and realized that Andraste was good, and even if the Chantry was misguided, she had helped his people. He went on to make Shianni the Bann of the Alienage, free the werewolves of their curse, and break the anvil. After all done, I decided a bitter-sweet, "Passing into Myth" was needed, and he decided to try to find Morrigan, who he loved.

i just wished i could have hidden the ashes. Not destroy them but not turning things into a circus either. Andraste is a matter of faith, if you have proof to sell or parade, it becomes either entertainment, or a matter of science ( why they heal)

It is an age where magic is feared and accepted and there is no proof that these ashes are any more holy than they may be enchanted.

That said, I liked the Guardian a lot and always save the ashes. I did kill Genevivi the first time, and frankly, despite his best intentions for sharing, I still dont think that ultimately doing so was worse than commercializing it... but i digress..

I honestly wish that was possible. Would have been more fitting for a ruthless/pragmatic approach ("I have a Blight to stop, I don't have time to go running around looking for a dust bin that may or may not exist that may or may not heal a sick man!") than defiling the ashes. That choice came across as more chaotic stupid or stupid evil than anything else.
