HORRIBLE DRM in Dragon Age II retail

So, here's the deal: you need an EA account, then you need to activate the game on that account and you are limited to running the game on 5 PCs in 24 hours. I realize most people will not play the game on 5 PCs in the same day, but I have a question:
WHAT THE PLOK WAS WRONG WITH THE DRM IN DRAGON AGE 1?
I just don't understand these people. Is it that hard to keep boxed copies on a DISC CHECK only? I thought they have learned their lesson with Mass Effect 1, but it seems they just keep going back to the online activation shenanigans.
Dragon Age Origins, Awakening, Mass Effect 2 - all wonderful games with friendly DRM (disc checks). I even bought 2 copies of Mass Effect 2 at launch to show my support for the friendly DRM. Yes, I bought one extra copy just for the DRM.
Now I have 2 pre-orders for the BioWare signature edition and I am canceling one and will probably cancel the second one too. Screw this, I'll get it in the bargain bin for 3 dollars next year.
If you put online activation DRM in Mass Effect 3 too then I am done with BioWare.

I seriously doubt that.
In any case, I never had any issues with ME1, and that never made me make an account.
I know very little about DRM, so can someone explain this to ignorant old me?

I wish I also had money to burn...
As for the DRM... eh, I've gotten used to it. The whole 5 PC limit is not an issue if activations can still be revoked (EA had released such a tool). As for an EA account, hardly an issue.

I thought drm with both ME2 and DA was pretty painless. Hope they stick with that method.

I don't see any issues with DA2's DRM that's worth getting worked up about.

I'm sure what you meant to say was inhumanity. Unless you were trying to ironically parady the broadcast from the Hindenberg disaster.pitchblaq wrote...

Are you trying to sarcastic? Lots and lots of people still have no internet connections around the world.ViSeirA wrote...
What's wrong with online activation? seems pretty reasonable to me, all people have good internet connections now... the DRM that is not acceptable is what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed 2 and so on, online activation is perfectly fine.

DA2's sounds about the same as DA:O's. Might require a bit more online connection requirements, but it's in legal grammar and makes my head hurt.

If you're a member at BSN then you already have an account with EA, in DA:O it was optional to log on and upload your profile, in DA2 is *seems* you have to log on in order to activate the game though this will only happen once.

I can live with this and actually might wind up liking this more than the DA:O DRM if we don't have to have the disk in to play.

Well, yes. I'm just saying, not everyone has an internet connection--even if you have an account, what about people who can't hook it up to their 360 or don't have Internet at home or something? Are we sure we're not talking about bonus content?

Requiring it all the time is terrible, but I doubt they'd do that.

Hold on, does this mean you don't need the disc in the drive to play? Sounds good to me!
You can play without the disc in the drive if you register the boxed copies on EA Download Manager.
But they should have kept DISC CHECK DRM for the people who don't want to worry about running the game 10 years from now or who don't want online activations.

28 pages of limiting your rights. Enjoy the read. It seems you need to read a whole novel nowadays just to play a freaking game.

Developers really need to work on less restrictive DRM that actually, ya know, prevents or tries to prevent piracy. I had to use a crack on F.E.A.R, and I had purchased the damned thing retail.

While online activation is not an issue for me, saying that everyone has a good internet connection now is flat out wrong.
My last job I drove to plenty of places to fix plenty of PCs where people were still stuck to dial-up (often shoddy dial-up) or the little dish kind of internet connection that's expensive and not very good (slightly better than dial-up, far worse reception than satellite TV or radio or true satellite internet (even more expensive)) so....
yeah, not everyone has broadband. Most everyone in the USA can get some kind of internet connection, but not absolutely everyone.

What are the consumer benefits of online authentication versus the disc-based model?
The benefit is that users do not need the disk in drive once the machine is authorized.
Will I be able to play my game offline?
Yes, you can play offline once the game is authenticated. Authentication requires an Internet connection. An Internet connection is not required after the game has been authenticated.

No I'm not being sarcastic, if it requires online activation it's not so hard to plug in a dial up connection once and be done with it, also yes most people around the world have internet access at some point... be that DSL, T1 or whatever.

It better only be required once, though I'd rather it not be required at all for a SINGLE-PLAYER game. I got royally fed up with all the deactivation shenanigans with DA:O's DLC.

Sigh... you do know that EVERY game company that utilizes online-check DRM removes this DRM once the game as been on the market for 2 years or so, yes? This is common practice - has been for many years.
It costs money to maintain servers for the DRM.. once the game is deemed to have run its course in terms of income, they remove that DRM.
