Well that link mentions NOTHING about a 5 PC limit, all you need to do is register your game online (which was the same with DA:O) and login to EA (again, the same as DA:O) to access the DLC/Bonus content.

Basically, no worries. I was never bothered by the DA:O DRM, so I doubt the DA2 one will affect me.

Terrible move. EA should take an example from The Witcher's team, who is going to not put any DRM on The Witcher 2. I hope it (TW2) sells well and show other companies how it should be done!

and it's still going to get pirated, tis a sad world we live in.

Already pre-ordered it and DA 2 though.

I can live with this and actually might wind up liking this more than the DA:O DRM if we don't have to have the disk in to play.

Dude, you're completely missing the point. YOU CAN play Dragon Age Origins without the disc if you activate your serial key on EA Download Manager. But there ARE MANY people who actually preffer to have the disc in the drive. Now that is IMPOSSIBLE.

In conclusion: Dragon Age Origins could be played with the disc in the drive (completely offline) or without the disc (if you enter your serial key in EA Download Manager).

In Dragon Age II you can ONLY play the game if you activate it and authenticate it and open an EA account, add the game to it and all that stuff. So they have screwed the people who only play and install the game offline.

What's wrong with online activation? seems pretty reasonable to me, all people have good internet connections now... the DRM that is not acceptable is what Ubisoft did with Assassin's Creed 2 and so on, online activation is perfectly fine.

While online activation is not an issue for me, saying that everyone has a good internet connection now is flat out wrong.

My last job I drove to plenty of places to fix plenty of PCs where people were still stuck to dial-up (often shoddy dial-up) or the little dish kind of internet connection that's expensive and not very good (slightly better than dial-up, far worse reception than satellite TV or radio or true satellite internet (even more expensive)) so....

yeah, not everyone has broadband.  Most everyone in the USA can get some kind of internet connection, but not absolutely everyone.

Very true. We consider ourselves lucky to have DSL - there are neighboring communities without.

Er, not to mention the people who simply don't have an internet connection.

EA ACCOUNT, REGISTRATION WITH ENCLOSED SINGLE-USE SERIAL CODES, INTERNET CONNECTION AND ACCEPTANCE OF END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT REQUIRED TO PLAY AND TO ACCESS BONUS CONTENT (IF ANY) AND ONLINE FEATURES AND/OR SERVICES

It says it's required for access to bonus content and online features.... never said for activation.

Yeah..... good luck to them with that. The game is going to be pirated to hell and back.

No issues with DA2's drm, online activation is nothing.

The fact that you don't think this is going to happen to DA2 regardless of DRM is amusing.

I don't like online-checks, for reasons that have been repeated a lot already. I just hope the OP read it wrong and that the DRM is the same as DA:O, where only the DLC required an online check...

@Ryzaki: Exactly, the only thing Ubisoft did with its horrible DRM is push back the piracy date... and even then I could not play the game when their servers went offline twice because of DDoS attacks.

If you are here, YOU ALREADY HAVE AN EA ACCOUNT.

Don't you understand that that is not the point? It's about taking a DRM system that was actually good (disc check only for retail, with the possibility to add the serial number to EA Download Manager and play without a disc, you you desired) and replacing it with a horrible online activation one that we have been opposing for years.

Hathur wrote...

Sigh... you do know that EVERY game company that utilizes online-check DRM removes this DRM once the game as been on the market for 2 years or so, yes? This is common practice - has been for many years.

But you need the internet to actually download the DRM patch for the game. So if a person can download the patch, they don't really need to remove the DRM since they can just activate it.

But I am talking about the people who just want to put in the disc and play. They have made that impossible now. Congratulations BioWare and EA for screwing up on the DRM again.

I'm going to cancel my 2 pre-orders of the signature edition and go for the Witcher 2 Collector's Edition with that awesome sculpture and a ton of physical bonuses, not some virtual items that get obsolete 30 minutes into the game.

Requiring an internet connection is not good imo. But it's common now.

Requiring it all the time is terrible, but I doubt they'd do that.

requiring a permanent internet connection, a la assassin's creed, is bad. requiring online activation one time only is not so bad. if someone doesn't have the means for internet, should they be spending $60 on a video game?

That was momentually idiotic on Ubisoft's part.

And AC2 got the **** pirated out of it once it was cracked. *shakes head* The only thing Ubisoft did was make things harder for people who bought the game.

But there are also many people for whom it's lack of DRM is another reason to buy it. When a company trusts it's customers, many of those customers want to act worthy of that trust.

CD projekt understands what I think someone from Valve also once stated: the pirates, they're not your customers. So focus on making your customers happy. Not including any DRM is one of the ways to do that.

Uh, I never said that. I know DA2 is going to be pirated like crazy, probably more than DA:O was. And I'm sure TW2 will be pirated even more than either of them.

They should offer an offline activation option like Windows XP did.

The "5 PCs in 24 hours" thing sounds reasonable enough to me. The online authentication is something I don't like but will be able to survive, personally.

Here's one thing I want to know, though. If EA goes under and ceases to exist as a company, will I still be able to freshly install and play my game? (this is a hypothetical. Probability of me not buying DA][ has now increased to >85%)

DRM doesn't work anyway, it only punishes actual customers. The way to prevent piracy is to provide an online component that requires a unique id and that players actually want to use, like in Starcraft 2 or FPS games like Black Ops etc. . If you make things more convenient for pirates than actual customers you're only going to hurt yourself.

If TW2 is pirated more than DA2 there'll be a good chance its beause its better selling than DA2.

Not because of some DRM scheme.

the chances of tw2 outselling da2 are about as good as the earth growing legs and running laps around the moon.
