Three years, and not only does this problem still exist, but I've yet to find a solid fix for it.

http://meforums.biow...34397&forum=127

I'm refering to the first one:

First Problem : Sound Stutters and brief freezes. 90 Percent of the time
this would occur during conversations, mostly when my protagonist would
speak. The game would lock up for about 10 seconds while repeating a
sound like a broken record, then it would clear up and act like a normal
game for a while. Not a game breaker, just REALLY REALLY annoying.
Especially when it did happen in combat, because when the game came back
from stuttering my character would be lying dead on the floor.

The game remains playable, but just barely. I miss out on half of the voice acting because of this, and I never know when the game will lock up in the midst of a firefight.

Rig specs:

Acer Aspire Laptop
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64-bit
CPU: Intel Core i5 M460 2.53 GHz
RAM: 8 GB DDR3
GPU: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5650, 1 GB
Sound: Realtek High Definition Audio

The drivers are all up to date, and contacting EA support has proven fruitless. The problem persists even under a clean reboot without any unnecessary background apps or services.

So I come to you, dear community, to help me out on my plight to make Mass Effect 100% playable. Surely others have encountered this very problem and has discovered a fix, since.

Yeah, that's a very annoying bug. Here are some things that you might want to try, in this order:

1. Make sure that you have the latest patch (1.02) installed.

2. In the options, disable Hardware Sound.

3. In the BioEngine.ini under "My Documents/BioWare/Mass Effect/Config", search for [ISACTAudio.ISACTAudioDevice] and under that, change or if necessary add the following values:

MaxChannels=64
ReserveChannels=2
TotalAvailableChannels=62

4. Also change or add if necessary:

DeviceName=Generic Software

5. Download the "Patch v11 for Silent Hill Homecoming", preferably from its home page:

http://enbdev.com/download_en.htm

If you have doubts about this, of course check every file that you download from the internet for viruses.

The folder that you have to install the patch into is "Program files/Mass Effect/Binaries".

Note that this patch makes the game think that you have a different graphics card, so you will have to authorize the game again. It's a good idea to manually deauthorize the game before any such change.

No guarantee for any of this of course, try it at your own risk. On my PC, that patch worked great for ME 2 before the official patch was released, and it was the only thing that also fixed that annoying short sound freeze bug of ME 1.

1. My game is indeed patched to 1.02.

2. Hardware sound is already disabled.

3. For some reason, TotalAvailableChannels reverted to 64, even though I changed it to 62 in the past. Reverted it to 62.

4. This was already the case.

5. I don't see why this fix would have any effect what-so-ever on the game, because it doesn't actually replace any files?

My first question, is have you installed DX9.0c that came with the game, or did you skip it thinking DX10 or DX11 would be fine? ME1 specifically requires DX9.0c. It can run for a bit with later versions, but problems often arse. Win7 is capable of running them both side by side.

That said, I can see a few potential problems.

Win7: ME1 was not coded for, nor tested on, Win7. Especially the 64 bit version, with the extra translation table of runngin a 32 bit program under a 64 bit OS. Just because others have managed to get it to work, does not necessarily mean you will. Mileage will vary depending on the tech level of who is driving the machine, and a certain degree of luck.

GPU: Radeon Mobility. Mobility chipsets are very much cut down versions of the full fledged article. Doesnt matter how much RAM it has, if the chipset doesnt have the grunt, extra memory wont help. You mentioned all drivers are up to date. Try rolling it back a revision or three. Latest drivers tend to be optimised for the newer games, and can cause a lot of headaches in older games such as ME1. Due to the more open nature of the environments within ME1, with hordes of people in the Presidium and other areas, it actually has higher system requirements than ME2.

Sound: Realtek HD audio. Works fine with ME2, but can have issues with ME1. I run the same audio chipset, and while I dont get the freezing, I do get sound issues, but only whilst in Flux, everywhere else is fine.

I solved this issue on my custom desktop with Realtek HD audio. The problem is that in many forums they keep saying to disable hardware audio but if you do this in the game menu it doesn't actually fully disable hardware audio. You have to do it in the Mass Effect Config for it to actually work. My audio seems to work fine now.

It also turns out that the default driver that was shipped with Win7 for the Realtek HD audio chipset was as buggy as hell, and caused an absolute crapload of problems. Updating the device driver from your motherboard manufacturer or Realteks websites solved the issues with Realtek audio with Win7 and ME1.
