I would also wager to say that Bioware should not be showing us Varric's exaggerations and embellishments. At all. Especially if there are differences in art style.

To an already skeptical fanbase, showing drastic differences can be polarizing and will cost them sales in the long run.  'Gaming journalists' can't be trusted to bump your sales alone.

It's called hype

I don't understand, a little more depth if you would:
Why did that same hype cause blatant hate to fill this thread?

I meant that hype caused all the praise. When you see the Skyline trailer for example, you think OMFG.

Why did people think "OMFG?"

If you'd rather not take the time to respond, I'd say that factor of excitement arose from the potency of the movie trailer's visuals.

For all we know, that only happens in the tutorial to teach controls.

They've stated it happens several times.  And that second picture is clearly embellishment.  Pretty sure the game engine cannot handle that many enemies on screen.

I seriously dont think they have the time to create two distinct looks

Chuck Norris is Justin Bieber. DA2 isn't trying to be more like ME2... ME2 is trying to be more like DA2.

Not so sure about the first part, there were some pretty nasty fights in DAO that almost killed my computer with 50% more enemies.

As to the second part, *suppossedly* the engine has been optimized for more characters on the screen at once. Not that any of the gameplay videos prove this yet.

Edit: That's still a mob that will kill my computer, though.

It can handle many more. There was a mod where you fought huge amounts of DS and other things...I'm talking like 100+ at a time. My pc did not slowdown or choke.

Are the graphics really that bad? My eyes must suck.

I don't really give a damn about graphics, but they keep japing about how graphics are better and they've probably spent a lot of time and budget on that unnecessarily since IMO the graphics in the Sebastian trailer look like absolute crap, far worse than DAO and incredibly low resolution

Bingo.

Origins' graphics were fine for what it was doing. The fact that Greg Zeschuk went out to say DA2 would look "super hot" raised people's expectations. The fact that in just about every single interview about DA2, the devs highlight how they're improving the graphics raises expectations more.

So when I see some of these screens and they look worse than Origins, its just one big WTF?

I just hope they eventually release some DX11 screens so we can clearly see what DA2 on the highest PC settings with DX11 will look like.

The mage is Bethany, the emissaries are 175% the size of hurlocks, and Hawke is wearing a mini cloak.

Edit: Use your internet browser's zoom function at ~400% to see closer, there are big emissaries.

You sure that's Bethany? The hair looks like it's a different style than the other pics we have of her, and I wasn't aware your families hairstyles could change.

@Eveangaline, your family's appearance changes with a factor from your own character creation. David Gaider mentioned this in another thread. I believe he said that it changes according to either the base face model or skin color. This prevents having awkward family moments like making a non-white Cousland.

@PsychoBlonde, check a larger version of the picture from the link on the first page. Those emissaries are much larger than the hurlocks. I don't mind the new darkspawn looks at all, but the size of the emissaries is somewhat off-putting.

Bethany's hair may be clipping, but that's definately her "armor." Like I said, try zooming in. The hair detail is a little off, but that may be from her pose and size in the image.

The HD screen gives it incredible lighting from that angle while ingame it looks much like the crap we've seen already

This has got to be one of the silliest statements I've ever heard. Please don't try and sell that a picture of a screen actually looks better than viewing the screen in reality. Take a pic of your monitor, compare the pic to actually looking at your monitor and see which view is better. NO, don't do that, because you and everyone else already knows the answer. Get real. This is not quantum physics. I don't care what the lighting and angle are of a screen photo, no monitor adds further detail to muddy textures, or better lighting physics to game screens. It's quite simple. It's graphics turned up on an HD monitor and it looks brilliant. Nobody likes to be proven wrong, but jeeze don't compound it by holding on long after the proof has been shown. The proof is right here:

The fact is that Bioware just doesn't make good looking games. At least, ones that don't use out of house engines, like Unreal 3. I'm not buying Dragon Age 2 for the graphics, but, wow, sometimes it looks awful. I mean, sometimes it looks really good, like the screenshots with the...I forgot what Sten's race is, but those horned things look good. Then you have these ugly screenshots with the low resolutions. And the badly modeled hurlocks. This will be a game that doesn't have a consistent look to it.

...No, he's right.
The picture from the camera hides the muddiness of the textures therefore making it more visually appealing than in-game at full resolution.

If you can't tell by my wording, I don't really have any technical terms at my disposal to throw out at you.

No, it's the part where you start pushing awesomes.

HD image is HD. I still don't like spike shoulder plates, but a hurlock's gonna hurr...

I wonder what wild differences of graphics settings there are. DAO looks fine on my PC, but it's blown away by every screenshot others post. Still, environment textures in DA2 could use some work from what we've been shown.

That's about it.  I'm not ever going to like the stylized look (the German article calls it "artificial" and compares it to Assassin's Creed but "earthier") but there's no point in talking about it anymore.  I'm just interested in the lore bits.  The emissary change, I don't really get it but I guess it's justifiable if you think that the ogres are much taller than Qunari.  I just feel sorry for the broodmothers that had to spawn them both.

I wonder if seeing a lot more hurlocks is reflective of this being post-Blight where they have more human broodmothers than dwarven.  Or if it's just easier to have all the regular darkspawn be the same height.  Yeah, probably that.
