Higher difficulty levels make your fights last longer and be more decisive. They make you appreciate the fights in between the dialogue bits (don't get me wrong, I love talking to people!) and gives you a greater sense of accomplishment killing everyone around you.

How fun is it to just do a level 4 Warpbomb and 1-shot someone, or getting out a Widow+AR or TC and doing so? Battles are done in seconds this way, and you spend more of the game deciding what paragon/renegade action you're going to do next instead of actually fighting things.

If that's your style and you're more into the roleplaying/story (especially the first time you play), by all means I'm not one to judge. I enjoy both the RP and shooting, but usually reserve myself to Normal-Vet.

They need some weapon or armor unlocks for every difficulty.

Or at least something along those lines.

Interesting idea.  Would playing on Insanity unlock all of the bonuses for difficulties below it then?

I guess. If you can do it on insanity you can do it on any difficulty.

Agreed, same for me.

Generally I play on normal difficulty just because then it seems like Shepard is more of a special forces soldier, rather than having to have a tough fight every single time he comes up against any enemy.

Bottom line is, insanity is not going to be for everyone, some people enjoy the extra challenge. Does that make the people that don't enjoy it that way casual ? No.

Yes, it does. Is there something wrong with being a casual?

absolutely nothing as long as people are not trying to take away that option by claiming that its too easy and should be made harder :)

Unrelated: but I noticed that almost everyone seems to have a Dragon Age picture... If I like Mass Effect 2 (I do, it's my favorite game) would I like Dragon age? Haven't played it yet, mostly because the combat looks bad on videos and I really don't like being forced to be or use my squad.

Q: Why play on Insanity?
A: Why not?
A: For the lulz!
A: To see what it feels like.
A: Because it might be fun.

@GLADoSCake: You might.  You probably will.  And it is possible to go through the game without using your squad, although sometimes they follow you anyway.  There is more character interaction and the combat style is different, but you'll probably pick it up quickly since you're not new to gaming in general.  The story is very good, if that matters to you.

Casuals are known for being uncool and unbrolike.

It depends on whether you like WoW gameplay.  It has a steep learning curve when you start out, but once you find a tactic that works, you can use that same tactic through the whole game.  There are balance issues in the character creation system: no reason to pump anything but dex for a warrior/rogue, or magic for a mage and mages are far more powerful than the other two classes (I've soloed the game on the hardest difficulty with all three classes, and mages have the easiest time by far).  It also felt a bit too twitchy for a traditional RPG and the lack of an action queue made using your party awkward (which is why I ended up soloing).

The story is pretty dull and predictable, if you've played a couple of Bioware games.  It's well executed, but there just isn't that much meat on the bones of the story.  The characters are well written but can suffer from likeability issues (with a lot of the characters you'll be asking yourself why am I letting this person follow me around).  They did a pretty good job on fleshing out the lore of the setting, but most of it is buried in codex entries so you might not be inclined to read it.  If you go into it with low expectations you'll probably enjoy it more than if you're expecting the successor to BG 2.

As you get better gear and all, you end up being too good at some point, so you switch to Insanity later. But the fact it isn't available right away is BS.

But for ME2... I've observed the clunkiness of controls jump to infinity and break my game; I can't stand such crap. (WHY spacebar for everything? WHY?! :D)

I actually never tried ME2 on the lower difficulties, and for some reason I can't ever bring myself to lowering it.  I guess it feels like it cheapens the experience for me

As a RPG player you learn to value the plot, story and characters. If you try to beat the game on insanity you'll also learn to value the combat system which is pretty good.

On ME1 with Master Spectre gear I'm not even noticing that I'm playing on Insanity. Everything dies just as fast.

You'd need to make a new character to play insanity mode at its hardest.

I never much liked insanity on ME1 because almost every enemy seemed to just charge my position, and I can never kill them before they do. Instead of a cover and shoot game it just ends up being run and gun game as I constantly try and run from cover to cover. ME2 was great on insanity though.
