That would be more than a little odd, considering that DA:O Hurlocks looked nothing at all like Tolkien's orcs, but the DA2 ones do bear a distinct resemblance to them.cgrimm54 wrote...
I am of the opinion the redesigns were to differentiate DA from other similar universes (i. e. LoTR)
The first time I loaded up DA:O, I saw theOrcsGenlocks and theUruk-HaiHurlocks and thought to myself "Hmm... I've seen this before..."
The New Darkspawn design and the Lore!

Disagree. They are both generic enemies but DAO's looked more like Orcs, in my opinion.

Off topic: Recasts - hate them so much! It's okay if they aren't avoidable, like the Dumbledore change from Harris to Gambon, or the new lead we get in season 2 of Spartacus: Blood and Sand (best wishes to Andy Whitfield!). But what i.e. Marvel did with recasting Rhodey for Iron Man 2 and Bruce Banner for The Avengers, this just bugs me.
Call me a continuity fetishist, but that stuff IS kinda important for my viewing/gaming pleasure...

How on Earth did DAO Hurlocks look like orcs? They certainly didn't look like the Warhammercraft greenskins, they didn't look like DnD pigfaces, and they didn't look "squat, broad, flat-nosed, sallow-skinned, with wide mouths and slant eyes", like Tolkien described his orcs. They just looked like half-rotten humans, which isn't a look associated with any version of orcs that I'm aware of.XX-Pyro wrote...

The new Hurlocks, on the other hand, would fight right in among Peter Jackson's LotR without anybody noticing a difference.

question though,
Not all darkspawn are created equally are they? I had always assumed that they are all subject to different mutations.
Also is there a correlation between the dragons involved in each individual blight and the look and armament of the darkspawn or is it simply a redesigned art style.

Me to but that was what I liked about the game. I feelt right at home from the start. In my book a Western Fantasy game should have Elves, Dwarves, Mages, Orcs, Ogres, Goblings, Demons aso. So I was happy that the Darkspawn feelt like a typical Fantasy evil force.
Take away Dwarves, Elves and Orcs, what is left of an Western RPG?
A better game? I think the fantasy is what is important. Dwarves, elves, orcs... these are just generic apperances that you tack on some aspect of human nature to. Like with aliens in sci-fi, I think things only get interesting when you really step outside the box and create something unique and interesting - like the qunari.

Its the same as with weapons and armor. Why do the characters in Western Fantasy games use swords, shields, bows and platearmor? Why not guns, gadjets or hoverboards? And why Magic? Because Fantasy has its rules.
Make a superhero movie with no mask, cape or coustumes, no powers or gadjets, no nemesis or superbadguy, what do you got? Is it a superhero movie if its about a man in Jeans a T-shirt helping old ladys over the street?
Aliens are another thing. A space Sci-Fi can't have much different enemys then aliens. What would Mass Effect have if not aliens?

Sure, but there are alot of Fantasy in the world. For me Western Fantasy RPGs are about Elves, Dwarves and Orcs. There is a reason why Dragon Age has Elves and Dwarves because people like it. Since most things have already been done before its easier to use what already most people know and love. Qunari isn't that uniqe. The tal brooding warriors from a warriornation with a complete different lifestile.

Of all those things listed, most aren't needed. Some are necessary, but you can get by with only having one or two aspects easily. Song of Fire and Ice has no orcs or elves. It barely has any magic at all. The Dresden Files are set in modern day Chicago with magic and mythical creatures. Arcanum was a game with guns and magic and part of the play of it was the interaction between the two.
Some hero worlds have people with no super powers to speak of like The Watchmen. Though it had Dr.Manhattan he was considered an anomoly, the only SUPER hero as opposed to normal heroes. Infamous and Han**** both had unmasked heroes.
Add to that a lot of sci fi has no aliens in it at all. Humanity is all the enemy thats needed for those. The only thing that is close to common in Sci fi books is some sort of interstellar travel. Be it some sort of FTL travel, teleportation, or even just plain old sublight speeds with cryogenics. Even then there are sci fi books that take place in just our solar system because travel beyond is unfeasable.
On topic of the Darkspawn... meh the Ogres jaw is kinda freaking me out and I'm not sure if I like the new Genlocks or not... but then again thats a genlock from legends and it's possible its a mutation or subtype of some sort.

While I don't love it, I approve of the darkspawn redesign because now there is actual visual continuity between different breeds. In DAO they looked like a mismash of generic evil minions from several fantasy novels. Now I'll feel like I'm fighting an actual horde.
On a more focused scale, the Ogres looks positively idiotic, and the Hurlocks, while not as bad, aren't as good as the Origins / Disciple design. I miss the slasher smile.
Genlocks... I don't know. I approve of them looking gorilla-esque rather than like generic orcs (as long as they can wield weapons), but I'll refrain from judging until I see in-game shots.
This. Sums up my feelings perfectly. The ogers redesign has robbed them of some of the visual menece they had in Origins. They were scary. Now they are merely imposing at best. and rather goofy looking. The hurlocks have largly grown on me, but I hope that Disiples will not be changed to much. Those were just about perfect.

I hate all the new designs. I rarely say this, but maybe the designer should be fired. What is up with the faces of the ogres? Before they were intimidating, now they're like big ugly doofuses. The hurlocks look like bad fanfic versions of Skeletor. The new emissaries look like skeletons with giant baby heads. The Genlocks...what the hell and why wasn't the designer given a special talk? I really hope those aren't the final designs or if they are, hopefully that was just the rough draft and the final one looks so much better.
I doubt the design team is going to revise their designs at this late stage. I'm hoping that these odd-ball creatures will look a bit better in gameplay (but I'm not holding my breath).
From what I can gather, perhaps darkspawn won't play as big a role as they did in Origins since we will also have the qunari to worry about.
I guess what I'm trying to say is the less I see of these new silly looking darkspawn, the better.
Apart from that I think this game is going to rock!

The noly thing I will miss is the look of the original hurlock, it looked really disturbing, quite frightening in many ways, especially in the Ostagar video there was the look of reckless hatred, pure malice in their eyes and expressions, the new ones seem more like tortured miserable beings. I expect there is a proper reason for this and the while the new ones look good, I will miss the original Hurlock
Well put !

I wonder why they don't make animal-Broodmother? Like Bears, Wolves, Dogs or Cats?

Seriously though, I'd say first of all, Blight Wolves, Bears etc. are ghouls, meaning they were tainted and survived the Plague, but I'm not sure the Archdemon would be interested in formerly spawning animals for a proper army. Besides, it is insinuated that future Broodmothers are somewhat "violated" by the Darkspaw, and all darkspawn species are made from humanoids...
