Trying to get to the bottom of crash issue. I really would just like to know who is using what. If your not playing on 64 bit version of windows 7 please refrain from posting.

Just post wether your crashing or not in windows 7 x64 OS, and your system specs including graphics card, CPU, cores, motherboard, and other info. If you have NO problems would love that system info too.... would be nice to just narrow it down as to what might be causing this issue so many are having. Thanks!

Also if you have found anything that fixed your problem share....

New computer and fresh install, so can't say I'm certain about everything here, but here goes...

Computer: Clevo B7130
OS: Windows 7 64 bit Professional
RAM: 8 GB
VRAM: about 1 GB; Intel HD graphics + Nvidia GeForce GT 425M (Optimus tech), drivers recently updated (Nvidia 266.58)
CPU: Intel i5 M 580 @ 2,67 GHz (4 cores)
Dragon Age Ultimate editon (European retail version, patch 1.04)
Also running quite a few add-ins
I generally try to run the game using only cores 0 and 1.

Problems: In Leliana's Song DLC ONLY (so far); CTD when alt-tabbing out to Windows. Had to play module with all 4 cores because of that, resulted in a very hot computer.

Source for irritation: Starting in the lower levels in the Circle tower, screen "freezes" for about 1-5 seconds; game appears to have crashed, but suddenly responds again (this was the reason I upgraded Nvidia drivers from 259.39 where it was common to 266.58 where it has happened once so far).
Have noticed that computer generates less heat with the new Nvidia drivers, at any rate.

Otherwise I haven't seen anything "serious", but I've just started a new run on a new computer; won't exactly be shocked if I discover more as the game progresses.

Computer: DIY

OS: Windows 7 64 bit

RAM: 4 GB

VRAM: 1 GB; ATI 5770

CPU: AMD Phenom II X3 @ 3.4 GHz

Dragon Age Ultimate editon (Steam, patch 1.04)

I generally try to run the game using only cores 1 and 2.

I have CTD if running with all 3 cores in action. Very stable with only 2 cores so far. Have completed about half the mainline quests in DAO and a couple of smaller DLC's.

Hi, I did experience some crashing in the beginning but I fixed this. After that, the game runs very good on my system all maxed out, no crashing, I run the Ultimate Edition from STEAM, wich is in my games folder on another drive, so DAO is not installed on C:. I also have a bunch of services disabled, and have set the game priority set automatically to REALTIME in taskmanager when it is launched, this fixed crashing for me btw.. (Prio can do this for you http://www.windows7d...o/ktfibjat.html) Thats all I did.

No crashing issues here in Win 7 64bit, latest game patch (probably played last at patch 1.03).

Apple MacPro 2 x 2Ghz Intel Xeon Dual Core

3GB RAM

MSI Radeon HD 4870 1024MB (latest Catalyst, not sure which were "latest" when I last played)

Also played the game on a nVidia 8800GT with whatever driver was new back then.

DIY Computer build - this month
Win 7 Pro 64-bit (w/ auto updates ON) - reinstalled this month
AMD Phenom X4 965 - 4 core/3.4GHz
Asus M4N98TD EVO motherboard (bios 1003)
PNY GTS 450 1GB DDR5 GPU
8GB RAM
750W PSU

Running DA:O and Awakening in their original versions, from DVD.  No crashes.

A note for Asus motherboard users-- I love these boards, but I've found that they do not recognize the RAM timings on some systems. In my latest build I had to enter the timings manually. Also, Asus has updated bios to improve stability in recent months, at least for AM2+/AM3 boards... I don't like to mess with mobo bios, but if you're experience crashes across multiple applications, it is something it consider.

I had a few crashes in the game here and there, but nothing to worry about. On the other hand, the final battle was a nightmare.

When "that enemy" had about 25% of his life left, the game crashed. Restarted the game, but crashed again. Then restarted the computer and set the graphics to the lowest, and crashed again. Then went to sleep. The next day I tried again with lowest graphics, but this time i didn´t summoned any troops, and this was the only way i succeeded.

Running DA:O Collector's Edition and Awakening from DVD. Patch 1.04

I'm playing DAO Ultimate under Windows 7 Home Premium 64bit with a quad core Intel i5 750 processor, 4gb ram, a Creative X-fi soundcard and a Sapphire Radeon 5750 grapics card. The motherboard is an ASUS P7P55D and I'm playing full screen at 1920x1080.

On my system DAO seems reasonably stable, I do get the occassional, seemingly random, crash to the Windows Desktop (complete with a Windows requester blaming DA for the problem) but they're fairly infrequent. I've had no rebooting machines or BSOD.

Brand new computer, so fresh install.
I have move my old character from a XP SP2 to this one and it crashed shortly after I engage Gaxking in the back alley. I have not been moving around a lot, just loaded a save game right outside the door to Gaxking.

I started in 1920x1200 full resolution, are now using 1440x900 with low graphic settings
I have tried to run the program in XP SP2 compatibilty mode, it did not help

Edit: updated Catalyst to 11.1 and it solved the problem - just delete my post if it doesn't help anything now <_<

First game install on a new laptop with most of the bloatware cleaned off.

Computer: HP Pavillion dv6 laptop
OS: Windows 7 64 bit Professional
RAM: 4 GB DDR3 (2 x 2048 MB)
VRAM: approx 1 GB
Graphics: ATI Mobility Radeon HD 5470 (drivers updated last week)
CPU: AMD Phenom II P820 Triple core processor @1.80GHz
Dragon Age Ultimate editon (European retail version, patch 1.04)

Problems:
Random crashing to desktop during fights with magic of any description involved, less likely if graphics turned all the way down and POV character is standing well back from the action. But any type of AOE is liable to cause a crash, also fights in areas heavy with/involving use of fire.

Also random crashes when simply walking into areas, leaving Lothering to kill wolves and approaching the side quest house from the Denerim entrance spings to mind. Game also seems to slow down every so often with it taking up to 5minutes (could be more I usually shut down by then) to load an area.

Things I've tried:
Graphics to lowest setting, turning off all but essential background processes, setting process priority to high or realtime, running on limited CPUs, turning off the sound, emptying the temp folder, updating audio & graphics drivers, various resolutions, running as administrator, running in all compaitibility modes. No luck sadly!

I did contact EA and got a cut and paste response telling me to update drivers and turn off background processes - so no joy there.

Someone mentioned something in the UE thread about something called a 'Large Memory Area' fix.
EDIT: Found it here http://social.biowar...3999/31#2037048
Have only just tried it so will report back if it works.

Thanks to Sigismundo for starting this thread btw -  would love to play through again with better graphics settings and without having to save after every fight/before every door

It's been great seeing all these specs so far.  Keep them coming.  I suspect a trend is developing, but more on that in a moment.

Fiirst, let me address Sigismundo, with whom I've enjoyed conversing over the last few days across various posts:  I hate to say it, but it seems obvious to me at least that there's something majorly screwed-up with either your installation of the game or your installation of Win 7, or both.  Not only are you getting lots of errors in the game, but from what I've gathered, the xml files that communicate your online profile aren't working AND your web browser wouldn't even load EA's support site.  That's too many failures to blame on EA/Bioware's corporate greed.

For all of us, please consider this when troubleshooting these problems-- Dragon Age has its flaws.  Several of us have discussed on this forum how CPU intensive and how sensitive the game is to abnormalities in the OS that DON'T affect most programs.  Here's an example, from a user in another thread... look at this killer machine he's running!

seicentosporting52 wrote...

no
other games give me any problems in framerate/crashing etc please help
as i would like to finish this good game and dlc's without having 2 keep
resetting evry hour or so.
THANKS

His problem has been resolved-- the solution-- he was overclocking.  It's counter-intuitive, I know:  more processor speed should help DA run, not hinder it, right?  But that's not the way it works.

Now I suspect most of you are NOT overclocking your systems... this is just an example of how sensitive the game is.  Should it be that way?  No.  Is it?  Yes.  Is Bioware/EA going to "fix" it in DA:O?  Probably not, since they've moved on to DA2.

So the trend I am seeing, or think I am seeing in this thread, is that we're probably ignoring a lot of subtle things.  I also suspect many of us are expecting the game to run with resolution and enhancements set to high-- a triple core AMD is sweet, but if it's only running at 1.8GHz, you're probably not going to get a decent frame rate with all the enhancements turned on.

Some of them are listed below, which I already posted a few days ago.  These are not all the answers-- I am only an amateur, but I've had some time recently and talked to a lot of people on this board.  Anyway, I hope this helps.

RaenImrahl wrote...

A list of the top things that can
cause game glitches/crashes when casting visually "demanding" spells (my
opinion, and in no particular order):

1) You're playing at a higher resolution than the program is capable reliably using on your system.

2) You have the in-game graphics settings (AA, Texture detail, etc) set higher than DA can reliably run on your system.

3)
The control software for your video card (i.e, Catalyst or Nvidia
Control Panel) is overriding or "enchancing" the 3D settings of the
application to an extent that your CPU or GPU can't handly it reliably.

4)
You have a really fast graphics card (with fast running RAM) but a CPU
that's closer to the games minimums.  The disparity can cause some
headaches, as DA is klunky game that is CPU heavy.  See: http://social.biowar.../index/5562579  and other posts.

5)
You have a CPU that is being overclocked.  DA doesn't seem to react
well, at least not reliably, to this.  EDIT:  It does not necessary
relate to an overheating issue, BTW.

6) You have a
graphics card that is overclocked-- this can be tricky, because some
cards come "factory overclocked", so it may be overclocking and you've
never touched it.  Driver updates can help here. So can manually
adjusting the ram timings on your GPU (see link in #4).

7) Your
system is overheating-- I know how frustrating this answer can be.  It
does happen, though, and if it does, it doesn't mean you're a bad
person!  :)

8) You're computer is loading an astounding amount of crap into memory when Windows boots.  See: http://social.biowar...8/index/5816873 as an example.

9) You've modded the game or done some other sorts of unconventional things to it.

10)
You're playing too damn long in one sitting--  unless you have a
bladder made of cast iron, you're going to need to take a bathroom break
once in a while.  Save and restart the game, or better yet, reboot the
PC while you tinkle.  Clear out your systems memory and give it a chance
to catch its digital breath.

11) You're multi-tasking too many other applications while also playing the game.

12) EDIT: Any combination of the above-- this happens a lot and makes troubleshoot all the more... well... troublesome.

There
are, of course, many other factors.  Hardware combinations, some
iterations of Crossfire or SLI, an old, abused installation of
Windows... all of these things probably play a part.  Some people also
believe the latest (and we can assume final) patches for the game are
bugged-- I have never encountered a problem with them, but since they
change how the game uses system resources, I don't doubt that some
people experience issues.

Finally, remember that software,
especially OS's, are a living thing.  They change, grow, and get sick.
Keeping an OS in good operational state is essential when playing a
demanding game like DA.  Also, not all 3D games put the same demands on a
system-- DA seems to be unique in how it is coded, at least to the
extent that it relies on the main CPU for certain effects-- at least if
other posts on this site can be believed.

Just some proverbial food for thought.

Cheers,

RI

Right-o quick update. I followed the instructions and used the .exe file memory setting changes originally designed for Fall Out 3 and it appears to have worked. Played with the graphics as high as was recommended for my system, went crazy with the magic and running into the fire and no crashes, sound's gone a bit crackly in places but that could mean I need to do a driver update.

Anywho, for people having problems it might be worth giving this one a go:

Running the game on recommended settings, process priority set to high and running as admin.

I've played the game on two laptops, both running Windows 7 64-bit.

The first laptop was an HP dv6500 series that I bought in the summer of 2007. It had a 1.8ghz Core 2 Duo processor, 4gb RAM, and a Nvidia Geforce 8400M GS. I was playing with Medium details and Medium textures, with Frame Buffer Effects and AA turned off. It was generally playable with only occasional slowdowns, but in retrospect, my framerate was probably less than what most people would consider smooth. I played the game quite a bit on this laptop, multiple playthroughs, and it never crashed on me even once prior to the 1.04 patch. After that, I got maybe a couple of crashes. The screen resolution was 1280x800.

This past December my laptop became unusable, and I got a new one. This one is a Lenovo Y560 and has an i3-370M processor, 4gb RAM, and Mobility Radeon 5730 graphics. The screen resolution is 1366x768. I have only played the game with patch 1.04 on this laptop, and I run it with all settings maxed, frame buffer effects on, AAx8, and Vsync on to prevent occasional tearing. The gameplay is far smoother than the old laptop, and that was how I realized that the old laptop's gameplay was not as smooth as I had thought. I have gotten one crash that I canrecall on this system.

All in all, I have had only a handful (or fewer) of crashes total on both systems.  Generally the game has been stable for me.  All crashes I have gotten have postdated the 1.04 patch.

Ea Support area was in fact down, it came up again later, I asked some questions and the guy didn't respond for like 10 minutes....I went to bed....

The site not updating my files is a VERY common problem and interestingly that problem is true both with my XP and Windows 7 installs neither updates, service is running....and I have deleted all previous content. There are SO many threads with this issue. I even reinstalled the Xp copy of this game, I really beleive it is a setting on my player profile causing thing this. It may have something to do with when I try and send a picture I get a your filename i profane message even though picture names are like Sigismundo_(set of numbers).jpg etc..... there was no issue with me Using Sigismundo, can not imagine what this is referencing I really think my profile settings on web site are messed up.

As for my crashing in Windows 7, memory still hasn't gotten here I'm awaiting testing your theory.

If I was having problems across the board on one OS and none across the other I might agree....but I'm having issues on both and the Windows 7 64 is a near brand new install.

As for corp greed.....let's not forget the EA factor....Bioware makes great games.....EA...they killed Ultima and made Lord British cry.......they are the destroyers of all that is Holy in video gaming. I dunno that it's greed so much as incompetence as far as web site goes.....there's ALOT of threads on that issue, and my system keeps track of player profile for Battlefields and every other game I play fine......maybe if as many people played this as BC2 it would be fixed.

It was my understanding from a previous thread that the game itself (I really don't care about player profiles at this point, not my bailiwick) ran relatively fine on XP and not on Windows 7.

Perhaps this current thread can be of assistance... since it's essentially the reason others (not me) suggested buying more RAM.

I haven't played an actual DAO campaign yet, so I suppose I cannot yet be certain I don't have specific problems like the Smite crash. But the game does seem generally stable for me: I have gotten through Leliana's Song, Darkspawn Chronicles, and an origin story without any problems.

I want to add my system to the list, since I am running Win 7 64 Pro and DA:O crashes quite regularly.

Amd Athlon x2 64 4600+,
2 GB Ram,
ATI 4850 - 10.12drivers, 512 vram
on a Shuttle sn25p MB

While you might think this an old and outdated system (which it is, and I am perfectly aware of that fact), it still has to do. And it does quite well in all other games (like BF:BC2 - which runs stable for 10 hours straight, tested it l a few weeks ago during a lan:whistle:...) except when it comes to DA:O.
DA:O crashes most of the time when I open the inventory/skills screen. This happens inside battles, or while wandering around cities or my campsite. So no battle-related abilities or graohic effects are responsible for the crash.

As I said in another thread, it may be the sound that is played while opening the inventory? Or maybe some internal check fails - perhaps the "is the user allowed to use DLC / items gained through DLC" check?  I really do not know, but I want this fixed.
And I am happy to see I am not the only one...

I'm on a win32 bit system, and had the same crash probs when opening inventory/journal/character record, and was able to clear it up by setting my memory clock on the video card back to the default setting(400 MHZ) from 440MHZ. Hasn't crashed since. Are you running overclocked video?

Interesting, I was running a similar system before upgrading: An Athlon 64 x2 4050e, 2 GB RAM, Radeon 4770. I used it to play through DAO and Awakening. While I did have some problems like steadily degrading performance - a memory leak of some sort, no doubt - I didn't have crashes. Only big difference is that I was using XP 32-bit.
