Funnily enough, we were discussing a very similar topic just yesterday.

Possible, although I'd like to refer the Cerberus Daily News out of game announcement :

http://masseffect.wi..._-_January_2011

"The Cerberus Daily News will begin a hiatus on January 24th, finishing its run of one full year. Daily postings will cease except for three weeks in 2011: a week of posts will precede a downloadable content release, and two more weeks will lead up to the release of Mass Effect 3. "

This apparently suggests that there will only be one DLC that will bridge the gap between Mass Effect 2 and 3, story-wise. Now, since we've been practically told that Mass Effect 3 starts off with Reapers already destroying Earth ( and possibly other planets, too ), I'd find it hard to believe that a DLC about a Human-Batarian war can lead up to Reapers invading.

Also, the CDN out-of-game announcement suggests that regular postings will cease on 24th of January, then a an undetermined hiatus, then a week before the DLC. This seems to suggest that the soonest date at which DLC-related postings will begin is after regular CDN posts end on the 24th Jan.

Bring Down the Sky 2

Seeing as how BDTS and ME: Galaxy focused on this, I always thought there'll be a DLC on this

I'd loooove for a good batarian conflict DLC. I don't believe this CDN implies it will be. But I'll certainly hope!

A war with the Batarians, would explain why the fleet is absent when the Reapers drop on Earth, only a small vanguard remaining

This is exactly what I thought... but is it possible the Batarians are an intentional diversion

It is also possible that the Batarians are a totally unintentional diversion.  :D  The Reapers could be out there floating, waiting for the right time to strike.  These are dude that wait like 50,000 years between dinner courses.  They can wait until the squabbling lesser races get into a large conflict and weaken themselves.

I actually love the idea of the main Alliance fleet being away from Arcturus due to the Batarians and the Reapers sweeping up the skeleton crew before attacking Earth.

Well consider the fact that we only have tomorrow and the day after before CDN closes for 'good' (until a week prior to the next DLC & upcoming to ME3). Should be interesting and I'm sure BioWare will have something good to read about, I've noticed a sudden rush of great stories recently, from the rediscovered colony, mining facility explosion, that new creeper drug and the recent one today ^^.

Unlike previous CDN entries whose "FUTURE DLC LOL" status was pretty tenuous at best, this is actually an event with galactic impact. Assuming this doesn't fizzle out tomorrow with "oh it was a misunderstanding and they all kissed and made up", I could easily see this leading up to the next DLC or at the very least setting the back drop for galactic politics circa ME3.

Given that it's so close to the end of CDN I'm more inclined to believe it's "Important".

This.

I agree.

However, it doesn't even need to be an indication of a new DLC - it could just be to part of the setting of ME3. For instance, if the Batarian Hegemony and the Alliance go to war, it would make for an interesting impact in ME3 when the Reaper invasion begins. How you settle the war and gain Batarian help could be a major point in ME3. As stated above, the Alliance Navy could even be away from Arcturus due to the war when the invasion comes.

Or it could just be a DLC.

I'd be inclined to think the remaining DLCs will be story related in the way that LotSB is. Bridging the gap between ME2 and ME3. Some random missions with batarians don't really fit the bill.

I'd kind of hope it's something to do with Ashley/Kaiden. Or maybe Aria or Wrex.

This is gonna be good. Not sure how it'll bridge the gap to ME3 but we'll see. WOuld also be cool if VS was a major part of it. Given the Alliance's role it seems likely.

It is clearly a devious Reaper plan to cause a major galaxy-spanning war, in order to weaken and distract the galactic powers/Council races, so the Reapers can sneak in and say, invade Earth...

It must be. :P

It'll certainly be interesting to see how this story develops in any case, especially since there's only a few days left.

I dunno where my mind is, but all this talk of a Batarian DLC has me picturing Kasumi awkwardly trying to do the Three Stooges eye poke on a Batarian.

How about this for a theory: Batarians are causing trouble, things escalate and both sides get closer and closer to war. In a last-ditch effort, the Alliance decides to send in a diplomatic team which gets abducted. A member of said team's security detail is *drumroll* Ash/Kaidan!

Anderson contacts Shepard, Shepard puts on her ass-kicking face, the resulting rescue operation gets it's cover blown, the Batarians retaliate for a perceived attack, Alliance returns the favor, the Council races get drawn into the conflict. Final scene show's a dark nebula, suddenly there is a reddish-orange flash. Then a second one, which illuminates dozens of familiar silhouettes.

then for ME3 you have all of these badass alliance vets from the Batarian war of 2186 already pumped up to fight the reapers. then we cure the genophage and have clan Urdnot occupy batarian worlds.

I don't want to get my hopes up, but this will definitely fall into the theme of 'desperation' that I had hoped for many months ago.

I can also see the council not helping here - humanity will be blamed for acting independently.

Oh well - not going to get excited until something solid is announced.

I also just did some refresher reading of the wiki and it is believed that as of 2160 the batarian military is inferior to the Systems Alliance, and they have only a single known dreadnought. So I am reasonably confident in my prior assessment, unless they've got an ace up their sleeves which is making them more bold and aggressive than before.

Well, they might have something up their sleeves.
