Nah. Bioware is in Edmonton. (snip)
BioWare also has an office in Montreal, which would pretty much put it in the south-east of Orlais, no?
Great find - if nothing else, it is quite similar.

*sigh* Last month everyone thought the map looked like Europe upsidedown.
And next month people will think its actually a giant dog head, with Rivain as its nose. I have forseen!
No, but really people will believe what they want to believe.

Er, no. If you were to equate Thedas to eastern Canada, then Edmonton being a part of western Canada wouldn't even be on the map.

I think they were saying that the Montreal office would be around where Orlais would be on the map. Though Orlais would actually be closer to around where Toronto is. That map of Eastern Canada on the first page is pretty messed up.
There are some similarities between the maps of Thedas and Eastern Canada, but they're not similar enough to make me think it's anything other than coincidental.

Bi-focals?
I only see the resemblence if I cross my eyes and make everything all blurry and double visioned. Until I get a head-ache.

That reminds me - I had a T.A. back at uni who was Canadian, and he once said that he hated Quebec because "it's full of people from Quebec."Black_Warden wrote...
Nah. Bioware is in Edmonton. us Westerner's don't like that part of Canada. no way they intentionally based The Free Marches off of Quebec and/or the Maritimes.
It does seem pretty small, doesn't it? Makes you wonder what else is going on around the presumably earth-ish sized planet. Is the rest of the world just wild, unexplored land, dotted with Chasind-like people here and there? Because it's curious that that the people of Ferelden, Tevinter, Orlais, Nevarra and so on only seem to care/talk about their little corner of the world like there's no one else but them. I realize that there are mountains, jungles and wastelands hindering expansion and travel out of Thedas, but you'd think with magic they'd have overcome that at some point in the last thousand years. Not to mention they do have ships...Kilshrek wrote...
That's the world map? Did I miss a whole planet on the way in?
I'm now imagining there's another big landmass on the opposite side of the globe full of other more advanced civilizations, humans, elves, dwarves, etc, who snootily mock those backwards rubes over in Thedas.

Nah seriously. it maybe look like Quebec, but the main inspirisation of Thedas is obviously Europe. Ferelden equal Britain, Orlais equal France, Amaranthine equal Scotia.
I still dont get it... it looks nothing like Europe....
the map does not, the cultural reference does. and somewhat the manner the different countries has been placed on the map. And I'm betting a Sovereign (the gold, not the Reaper) that the Jade Empire is some the same map far East.
