For awards, since that's Bioware's big thing now. Every time someone makes a critical comment about ME2, some Bioware rep pops into the thread, puts his fingers in his ears and goes "la la la, I can't hear you, look at all these GOTY awards..."
I don't think that's really fair. We always listen to constructive criticism, but we have to listen to that criticism in context. If someone tells us that Mass Effect 2 was a huge failure and made terrible design decisions, we have to acknowledge that not everyone agrees with that sentiment. Perhaps they were terrible design decisions for that one person's preferences, but not everyone.
It's like walking up to an olympic gold medalist and yelling "YOU SUCK!" because you don't like their hair color. "I think you would look better as a blonde, but I recognize that you are a very fast swimmer!" would be a more reasonable sentiment. Put another way, it's the difference between saying "I don't like the Beatles" (which is reasonable) and "The Beatles sucked" (which is not reasonable, as they had a huge impact on music).

And frankly, I don't think there are enough examples of the genre for us fans to need to "pick sides."

thank god for that, i've been waiting for the rpg genre to appear more this generation and thankfully we're starting to see an influx of these this year.

Wouldn't it rather be like telling "your music sucks" to Lady Gaga? Since the olympics are settled mostly based on objective factors like time or distance that cannot be argued with, while game/music/whatever awards are pretty much all down to individual preferences.Mike Laidlaw wrote...

I though the charge was that the devs don't pop by the ME boards at all. I just can't keep up with what they're supposed to be doing wrong anymore.

Eh...those aren't very good analogies. Whether Beatles are good or not is subjective. Just because many people agree with an opinion doesn't make it fact. Certain things, like they were very successful, many people liked them, and they heavily influenced music are fact. But that has little to do with how you feel about the quality of the music.
Not only that, but most criticisms directed at ME are directed at the quality of the game, not something irrelevant, like "this game sucks because I don't like Shepard's face". An Olympic gold medalist analogy doesn't work anway, because their prowess has nothing to do with how you feel about them. It's cold, hard numbers. Any entertainment medium, however, is subject to opinion.
That said, I'm a big fan of ME2, generally disagree on every point raised by people who disliked it, and eagerly await ME3. I also see the point in bringing up the GOTY issue--you, as an individual, did not like the game, but the great majority did, and because BioWare cannot possible cater to every opinion, majority rules.

I'm not quite sure Lady Gaga is really about music per se -- she's selling more of a total entertainment experience. Same thing with Ke$ha. How about, say, Taylor Swift or Katy Perry?
Edit: though come to think of it, back in the day the Beatles were more than just music too.

You DO realize this is why we nitpick and rave and rant and spend waay too much time on these boards? Dragon Age gives us a fantasy fix that just doesn't exist anywhere else anymore. TW2 is a European RPG, and you need different tastes to appreciate it. And TES is open-world, it provides a different sort of fix.
Your game/universe is the only one of its type. You'd better do a damn good job with this next game or I'm going to shed some very unmanly tears.

Agreed 100%.
I, though not my pocketbook so much, am LOVING this coming year. Every game-loving cell in my body is positively giddy. Even did my part and got my husband playing some so I can.
I am looking forward to trying the new combat style and as ever wonderful story-telling from Dragon Age 2. Usually can't beat Bioware for a engaging characters and fantastic story-telling. What other company can make you actually WANT to have an alien for a LI ?
For me, it is about playing good games. The more that make great games the better. Quality all around evolves the genre and will create even more great games for us in the future. Yes, I am selfish like that.
But, there is a TED talk about how video games could change the world. It is interesting, if you like that sort of thing.

BioWare is a Great Studio. I bought almost everything they made recently (From KOTOR to DA2. yep, the game is paid and i'm waiting shipping). I'm somewhat missing Baldur'S Gate 1 & 2, I tryed 'em. But I never found any box containing them at Staples, Future Shop, Best Buy or other. But there is some more studios outside that make awesome games. Example Demon'S Souls on Playstation 3, and Fallout New Vegas.
USRPG rarely make some boring one (Alpha Protocol). But it's really not like the ****** genre. The good games of this genre don't leave japan (The Last Story ! F*CK YOU NINTENDO

And I know Diablo wasn't in the article, but Blizzard has WoW, and if they can lure their vast fanbase over to D3, which I don't think will be too hard, they'll sell a ridiculous number of copies, especially since it will have online multiplayer.
As far as awards go, I put little stock in them, hence my statement that there is a hierarchy of sorts that the media tends to propagate.

I Obviously prefer boxed editions. when there is some huge sales on Digital content I buy digitalized. But I really prefer to take everything boxed, you know, to proudly put it on my Library with the rest of them.
