I was playing through Tali’s recruitment mission on Haestrom recently, and I have a question:
At the beginning you are told not to spend too long in the sun as the radiation burns away your shields, and so you end up running to hide in the shadows, my problem (and correct me if I am wrong) is that the Geth you face don’t seem to have the same concern, even in direct sunlight they continue to have full shields.
My question is, is there ever an explanation, which I missed, or is this just a design oversight, I’m not really bothered either way, just simply curious.
Any answers would be appreciated Posted Image

There's no in-game explanation. But I don't think it was made by mistake - more likely, again, for the balance - AI of enemies has problems, and make poor geth to hide in shadows may be too complicated task

I read a thread with a few people knit picking at this question before. I dont think there is a direct answer to it given in game. Especially after all the 'burn out technology' talk. Since the Geth arn't effected though you are given the instant idea they have created a work around.

After all they have millions of units at least working in an unstable star system.

However I just like the game play explanation. It was a twist in the game to make it more interesting and exciting to fight on that planet. Just like the Red Sand canisters mixed it up on Illium.

Bah, it's no different than in ME1 on planets like Sharjilla (pressure hazard) or Xawin (cold hazard) where if Shepard stays too long outside the Mako it will kill him/her (and only Shepard) but the mercs that you fight on that planet can just hang around in sniper towers or on the ground with no ill effects. Heck at least Haestrom's evironmental hazard affects your companions too. Posted Image

Thanks for the answers people, never intended to nit pick, just wondered if it was ever explained, and I do agree it makes the game more interesting.

Well like in ME1 there are suits that protect you from extreme conditions. It might be more expensive. SO the geth might have protction against it Maybe those who patrol that area are more expensive to produce.

Could be very well balancing issues.

It does say in game geth shields are different but alliance tec's dont understand how.

I know you can take Legon there and i bet his shields are affected so you can go with its a glitch or what Captain Crash says i like to explain everything away so im with Crash they have adapted like the borg.

The Geth have the best sheild technology in the ME universe it could be easily explained away saying that their shields are strong enough to take the heat of the sun for at least a few minutes without burning out.

Being that your companions seem to have the same immunity (even with the occasional shield 'pop'), I'd say it balances out.  I think it was nothing more than a game mechanic to induce a little stress on the player and force him or her to make tactical decisions with a change in conditions. Of course, there's plenty of room in the story to interpret it as Geth superiority in shield tech, while merely assuming your companions are running and dodging between shaded areas right along with you, or in the case of Legion, fully taking advantage of that superiority.

In my first playthrough I remember being a little peeved that Garrus and Zaeed seemed completely immune to the effects of Haestrom's sun and moved with much more freedom than I did, but then I remembered they didn't actually purchase the game and might not be looking for any additional challenge like I was.Posted Image

EDIT: format.

Sorry to raise this from the dead, but I wanted to ask: is garrus or legion affected by the sun? I would hope that for both of them the sun would have no effect, especially garrus, whose own homeworld suffers from these conditions

Grunt isn't, as he doesn't use shields. As far as I know the others are.

I think its silly they didnt take that opportunity to code in some simple immunities like that for realism

Am I missing something here? What immunities? I thought Haestrom's sun affected shields and shields alone (apart from little scuttly things that cook in cutscenes when they leave the shadows). If so then Legion and Garrus both lose shields but are otherwise unaffected, just the same as Shepard and everyone else. Don't recall anything to indicate that Garrus' homeworld suffers from the same problem as Haestrom. Going from memory here but wasn't it just a metal poor core meaning a weak magnetosphere and more vanilla solar radiation? If Haestrom's sun has the weird dark energy thing making it age faster than it should that's a completely different cause and no reason to expect common effects. Yes, it might not be that realistic to expect something that can mess with your shields to have no ill effects on the person whose shields just went down, and there's the problem with loads of geth running around in the sunshine with shields operating as normal which creates the further problem of why Legion's stop working (if it does - I haven't played Haestrom with Legion). But other than that I can't see why there's anything for them to be immune to when nothing affects anyone else one their shields are down anyway.
