So my question is: has anyone come up with instructions for people used to the look and feel of these various games to customize NWN2 for a similar look and feel? I would like to get my friends back in NWN2.

I have talked 3 of my friends into buying and trying NWN2, mainly so we could play PWs together. All three of them discontinued playing rather quickly because "the controls suck". They come from MMORPGs like DDO, EQ2 and WoW. I know the interface is customizable (I customized mine first thing when I bought it). But, I don't have a MMORPG background.

I really feel bad for you. Seriously.
Your friends don't appear to be able to handle complicated things like accessing program control/setting screens and fooling around for the 10-15 minutes it would take to find a control scheme that would fit their liking.
So you're running an up-hill battle to a certain extent.
Plus, there's three (count 'em!) different camera angles. Hooo... talk about panic at the disco.
Seriously though, there are some configuration suggestions on the wiki site, but your best bet would be to ask each of them what they want their camera to do (pointing out the * on the numeric keypad switches between camera modes as they appear to be incapable of adapting to much), and figure out the changes yourself, then pass along the instructions.
Lord knows what they're going to do when their employer switches from Outlook to Outlook Express, or heaven forbid, Lotus Notes or something catastrophic like that.

Well, I disagree with you, NWN DM.
NWN2's interface sucks very badly. At best you can make it suck much less. But it will always stay poorly responsive, with weird camera angles, unintuitive and clunky.
I like over the shoulder view to admire the nice graphics that many new modules have. But I find myself constantly fighting to be able to click where I want to go. Or to see anything after passing a doorway...
Turning camera? It's a pure horror untill you modify the config file to reduce lag near 0 (or some other setting). Otherwise it spins freely and you hardly have any control over when it will stop and what will it show.
But yeah, you can make it suck less. The NWN2 Camera Wiki has some good pointers. Make sure you apply all of them. Also experiment on your own what suits you best.

I'll just jump in and say, it isn't so bad to it totally sucks completely and irrevocably depending heavily on your player viewing style. And you do have to work with it. But to give up on it so quickly, I think highlights NWN_DMs point, to which I agree in general. Maybe without as much obvious sarcasm, but then again, I tend to be quite dry in what I consider humor. I do have my moments, though.
Camera view I prefer is basically isometric and so I have relatively few issues with them. That said, there are times when I like to "look around" and I think I can see where the folks who prefer a more representative "first person" or "over the shoulder" look have some extremely legitimate complaints about the way that set of views are "controlled." (or the serious lack thereof.)
But you can, in Haplose's words, "Make it suck a lot less."

NWN2 and NWN1 camera /interface reactivity are ok for a single player game, or a COOP game, even if it's really far behind what good MMO can offer.
But for a MP game with PVP it's clearly completly out.

The past few days have clearly seen the 'sarcasometer' reach high levels in my posts. So if I put anyone off, I apologize.
But my central point remains valid I think; I really wonder how much is an "inability" to fiddle with the controls (unwillingness perhaps?) and how much is down to them having tried it and being unsatisfied that the PWs you frequented didn't start them at 32nd level with +14 everything (or get them there by the 2nd map).
With that inability or unwillingness, I again (perhaps less sarcastically this time though) suggest that you find out from each of them what is "wrong" with their interface and spend some time on your own figuring out what needs to be changed to make NWN2 more like what each of your friends want.
At that point you'll probably have to walk them through a series of instructions if they really are unable to fiddle for themselves.
And I was not being sarcastic when I said I felt bad for you. I had a bunch of RL friends that I wanted to attract to NWN2 (should have been a slam dunk since we all played NWN for several years), but for one reason or another none of them stuck with the game. That's left me without anyone I know IRL to play on-line with and DM for, which has been a bit of a downer these past few years.

The controls are simply horrible for real time play, in ways that can't be changed in the options menu. If the WASD movement wasn't completely broken and we could keybind hotbar buttons freely then maybe I'd give the dreadful camera and other smaller issues a pass, but all those things together are way too much for me to enjoy this game in multiplayer (as in without pause).

I suppose I have been playing too long and too much to be bothered in any way by any quirkiness of the camera but I find between the all the options for the three camera modes I can accomodate any perspective I care to play the game with.
I dislike WASD when not playing shooters though so I am clearly not the norm.
I will agree with NWN DM in that it looks like it is likely up to you to figure out what each of your friends has issues with and try to find the settings they will like.

A PW can customize and do this work for you, quite a few have done so already.
I would ask your friends and figure out what they don't like, and what they like, and then look for a PW which has addressed, or is working on addressing these issues ( some might just not have thought of it yet ). There are some PW's which have completely new "skins" to support their playstyle. All this talk about doing it your self is more aimed at single player.
Having technical folks who happen to be trying to make the same type of world you want tends to make it worth playing despite any limitations, NWN2 is not and never will be a MMORPG, however since it's so customizeable we can do things regardless of their commercial popularity.
I've added a lot of spells for example, had one player on another PW complain about their desire to never attack and only do healing spells, so i came up with a will save spell named "Mercy" which both stuns and protects an nearly disabled opponent, which lets a completely passive player help in the battle. Almost everything is customizeable and entirely new ways of playing can be invented.
Just to see what i have been working on is a improved UI to deal with langauges so they work inside the regular interface. This is all intended to be released as a new upgrade for the DMFI and their current langauge system, and for use across different PW's ( a lot of the things i am working on like languages i just don't need on my PW but am trying to make it usable for entire community, and unlike DMFI languages this is a lot easier to customize )

I would love to sit down with them and show them how to adjust the controls, but the nearest one is 35 miles (so there is a chance with him), and one 700 miles, and one is half way around the world from me.
I think the biggest problem is they have been spoiled by these other games - they had to tweak little to get what they want. NWN2 "gives you more rope" with which to hang yourself.
I will take a look at the NWN2 camera wiki. Thanks!

Isn't there a config file you could just email to them?
