Hoping there are some knowledgable techies around here who keep up on cards.  I currently have an Nvidia GeForce 8800 GTX card (768 MB) on a Gateway Quad Core 2.8 machine running Vista 32 bit Home Premium with 3 Gigs ram.

I was thinking, partly as an upgrade for DAO, of getting a new PC with Windows 7 64-bit (will DAO run on that?) Home Premium and 6-8 Gigs of Ram.   I could move over my video card but if there is something better on the market now figured I could look at an upgrade.

I was also debating upgrading my current machine to 4 Gigs of ram - but I assume that means installing a 64-bit OS on the machine as well to be able to use it.  It has 4 slots currently using a 1024/512/1024/512 configuration so I could dump the two 512's and add in two 1024's.  Depends on how good my current card is compared to the market these days (I got it last year)

Anyhow any feedback on the state of computer graphic cards for a PC would be much appreciated.  Thanks!

At this moment in time you really can't go past ATI's new 5870 cards. The performance will blow your old card out of the water. Otherwise you can get some good overclocked GTX 275's which offer some excellent performance / value.

IMO though I'd hold off until early next year to see what happens with NVIDIA's range of new cards, your GTX should be fine for another few months (And DragonAge from the minimum specs I've heard). That way you'll get more options, and the price should drop a bit regardless.

Dragon Age will run fine on Windows 7 64bit fine, as should almost every game out there, so definitely go for 64 bit, otherwise your pc will only be able to access between about 3 - 3.5 gigs of ram depending on the set-up.

Windows 7 is not supported by DAO, but I read a dev post that several people have played on it so it "should" work. Also, I'm not so sure if 64 bit OS's are supported. I tend to shy away from them cos some games don't support them and most older ones don't work on them for sure.

Sorry i can't help on graphics cards. I'm playing from a GeForce 8800 GT (512MB) on an Intel Core2 Duo E8400 @3.00Ghz. I'm still running XP cos I hate Vista. I actually have 4 GB Ram but only 2.7GB is recognized cos of the OS.

My advice is to see how DAO runs before deciding to upgrade. But I'm usually on a 2-3 year schedule and I built this PC last year.

You may consider get a 5870 but keep your 8800 at the same time for Physx.

8800 is more than enough for DAO. For newer games best videocards are ATI 5850/5870 since only they support latest DX11. Nvidia will have their cards in december according to rumors(they are unexpectedly late this time)

Ah cool thanks for all the replies. I have had both ATI and NVIDIA in the past. Have had just a smidge more luck with Nvidia in games than ATI, not sure why. So always a tough call between them for me. Well if I splurge early will look a those ATI models. Otherwise maybe wait till tax return in the spring and try one of the new Nvidia cards.

HD5870 is the best right now, unless while I was asleep GTX300+ or HD5970 released.

EDIT: Gah buccaniers, why did you necro this thread? I just realized that I posted in this thread 18 days ago.

Yes upgrading from 3gigs to 4gigs on  a 32 bit will make a differance 32 reconinzes between 3.25 and i seen it reconiize up to 3.75. Also another question why would you buy 64bit os and put 6gigs in it. when i paid 299$ for 64bit vist ultimate i made dame sure i bought a MOBO that supported 24gigs of TRI-CORE and bought 16gigs.  6 gigs is waste inho if youe wanting to go 64bit for the ram reason. Just my humble opinion

GTX 295 is on equal levels with HD5870. It depends on the individual game for which is better. They were both better then each other for about the same number of games.

Hardly. GTX 295 has no DX11 support, and we are competing a dual-GPU against a single GPU with its driver still been worked on.

The majority of the computer hardware websites review GTX 295 as being better. Radeon 5870 was worse in the majority of categories. For a while the Radeon 5870 was the best video card out there, but it isn't anymore. They haven't come out with anything that beats the GTX 295 so far. Now, the Radeon 5870 is about $100 cheaper though. You can't honestly say that the Radeon 5870 is better quality when the GTX 295 has been beating it on the majority of performance tests.

Even though this is a 2nd post, I feel it is important to state that ATI Video cards are having issues with drivers for Dragon Age. Just thought you would like to know if you want to upgrade your video card and play Dragon Age on it. It may get fixed to, but it may not as well. Who knows.
