I approve of the voiced protagonist, but not necessarily the dialogue wheel. Picking the 'Shut up' option should reasonably lead to a line wherein Hawke says something like, 'Enough out of you!'. Not 'I'm in charge; you do what I say!'. An appropriate paraphrase for the latter line might have been 'I give the orders' or 'Do what I say'. Not 'Shut up'.
I suppose the nature of paraphrasing into full sentences lends itself towards some confusion, but I'll hold onto hope that Bioware eventually decides to implement full sentences at some point along with PC voiceover.
Right now, I can't help but pigeonhole myself into 'Top option: Good, middle option: Neutral, Bottom option: Evil'. This is at odds with DA 2's lack of a morality meter, but such is what the dialogue wheel, and the paraphrasing that goes with it, tends to cause in me.

Your forgeting that it did shut his brother up though.

Carver: "Right..brother..."
Hawke: Posted Image

The dialogue option will display the effect a little.

At least you know your Hawke's attitude with each dialogue choice with the handy labels each choice comes with.

The problem I always have with voiced protagonists is the diction. The main characters I tend to create, realistically, do not talk like any of the main voice directions bioware chooses for it's games, and it always pulls me out of the immersion of the game.

So, I am not happy the main character was voiced.

I only started playing Mass Effect 1 today (yes, I'm horribly behind the times game wise) so I've not had long to get my head around it, but the wheel it's self and the more immersive dialogue style does work for me. The silent character in DA was sometimes very disconcerting, especially in the more dramatic moments. The emotion indicators sound a good addition since both games have caught me out on occasion with either the summary/tone of a dialogue choice being entirely different from what I thought.

The only drawback I can think of is if the voice grates there's no way to change it, I get why for costs reasons mind. Overall I'm content to wait and see when the game comes out.

Suffice it to say that the OP and I have vastly differing ideas of immersion. And people ought to stop mixing up the Warden's perma-blank expression with DA:O's unvoiced dialogue. Anyway, can't we just drop the topic already? The debate's grown rather tiresome by now.

I love they will voice the PC now, and what i've heard of Hawke, i like the voice too. The wheel, however, can be quite annoying if they paraphrase it wierd. But i am very hopeful!

Indeed, it seems most of the comments here have more to do with the Warden's blank expressions as being bothersome more than anything else.

I also think the "Dialogue Wheel" is a big innovation and more companies need to use it so they can evolve it. Alpha Protocol used it with their own twist and its dialogue interaction is its only saving grace and I think Deus Ex: Human Revolution is using it with their own twist too (full dialogue is subtitle on bottom as well as phrases on wheel).

I'm happy either way.

I do like Nicholas Boulton's voice for male Hawke. It'll go very well with my snarky, intellectual mage.

What effect the line has is not as relevant as what it actually is. One can never know what effect one's words will have on someone else, whether in video games or otherwise. All one can do is choose one's words and hope for a particular reaction.
If I was in Hawke's shoes and I wanted Carver to shut up, I'd tell him to shut up. Not open a potential debate about who ought to lead, which is likely to occur if I said 'I'm in charge; you do what I say!". That it did not is unexpected.

I would rather have no voiced protagonist. My two cents.

I'm really quite excited for a fully voiced PC. And I loved the dialogue wheel in ME, even though the paraphrasing made me go "Huh?" half the time. I think the snarky/firty/aggressive icons will be helpful, though. How many times did I initiate a romance when I didn't mean to....

Thank god we have a voiced main character this time! Don't get me wrong, I love Dragon Age Origins but voices make the game more imersive. Anyway, This is just my opinion.

Sorry for my bad english :(

It is not a large issue let me say that.  I play  games on both the xbox and the pc.  It's more of what I am personally used to,  Console because of limited buttons make sense to have a wheel.  PC I am used to the list dialogue like many past BioWare games.  Not a huge deal to me either way though I think you can get more words on screen via the list view than the wheel.

There are console games that use a list, and KoTOR and JE were both on the console and used the list.

I can appreciate your familiarity with the different UIs, but the paraphrase & wheel aren't there for the sake of being console friendly.

Eh?  So the paraphrase bit has suddenly  come into the discussion?  I assume that both kotor and je were ported to consoles were they not?

There is not 1, 2, 3, 4 on consoles so the wheel works much better.  I never saw a wheel on a pc game until after a couple of console games so I'd assume that the wheel started on the console for a reason.

I prefer no voiced PC, and while I'm at it, I would prefer to play my Warden again instead of Hawke in a sequel, but unfortunately both seem moot points now.

From a cinematic standpoint I'm quite happy with the additions. I hated how my Warden was little more than a glorified doll in Origins who could never appropriately react to the situations around her. Sure, I had no problem layering the mannerisms or voice I imagined she would have over the situations. However from an artistic point of view having this living doll standing there while everyone else is showing a broad range of emotion really killed my sense of immersion the first few hours that I played. They were just so out of place, so dull, that I had a hard time imagining how anyone could be drawn to follow them.
I can see why people would have problems with the new additions, but personally I much prefer a reactive character instead of a placid doll in games that include any kind of voice over. If the game had omitted voice acting entirely, even for NPCs, and gave them a more text oriented approach to speech - think something like what was applied in Morrowind - then I would likewise prefer a voiceless protagonist to go along with the voiceless supporting cast. When one or the other goes without, it harms my sense of immersion. I know not everyone is that way, but that's just how I personally operate.

Eh I dislike both. The VO means I'm stuck playing one chara per gender and probably modifying gender. And I won't role play but stick to treating it like an interactive movie.

And the wheel will just be plain annoying when my character inevitably says something that's not even hinted at in the paraphrase.

As for "cinematic."

There's a reason video games make s****** movies.

I look forward to the future when realistic voice synthesising software has been developed, so that we can get the best of both worlds.

I very much love the main character having a voice. I just don't like they voice , that's all. But in the long run I may come to love it. But for now Hawke's voice sounds like he is a sissy prat.

I can take or leave the voiced PC - really doesn't affect me at all.  I've been fine with many many games without a voiced PC, and the ones I've played that have a voiced PC - the voice hasn't been a positive or negative factor in whether I like them.

The dialogue wheel - haven't used one in a game, but not a fan of the concept.  I like to know what I'm going to say before I say it - and I feel the same about my characters.  From what I've seen (in some ME1 and 2 youtube clips, and I think one of the DA2 videos has a shot of the wheel in action) I'm not so sure I'm going to know what the PC will say when I make a choice.
