As we post, the Batarian military is in a stand off with the Alliance.
At any moment our long held animosity could turn into full blown war.
We aren't going to be holding hands with them and skipping through a meadow any time soon.

off topic, have to ask; Any one else think this might be setting up the next bridge DLC?

Most of the CDN updates this month could be made into plotpoints of a DLC, but it's all speculation at this point so we'll see what happens. IMO a stand-off between the Alliance and the Batarians would make for a good DLC however I believe the latest update settles the stand-off so who knows.

If I remember my Tolkein lore right, Orcs were originally Elves who were taken by Morgoth and twisted into becoming his  footsoldiers in his war to destroy the Elves and rule.

I don't see why you can talk to Charn.
Charn: "I didn't want to try to wipe out this human colony with billions of innocen people! I just wanted to kill and enslave a few humans!"
Shepard: "More then enough for me"
~blam~

Well, if you're roleplaying, you can't assume you won't get unlucky and die or be severely injured in a fight it might be possible to avoid.  If either happens...oops.  Sorry about that Terra Nova.  They turned the torches back on while my corpse was still warm.

Of course, your Shep can't really lose because you can always just reload and try again if you actually screwed up bad enough to get killed there, but your Shep shouldn't be counting on gameplay mechanics and that fact that he/she's the main character.

I really hope bioware ignores all the Batarian hate and at least gives you the option of recruiting one. With you laying out how bioware is setting the Batarians up as a Mega rouge state, I doubt they'll let that happen though...

Ahaaa. All i remembered was it wasn't Sauron.

On another note,

people seem to want the Alliance to enter a a pointless game of brinkmanship with the Batarians.

They are so tightly grouped together i just couldn't bring myself to consider them a threat.

One Singularity and......done.

Every encounter is a calculated risk.

Has there been a single thread more then 30 posts long that didn't reference a turian?

Be it calibrations, racism, or ah yes, it seems no thread can escape the turians.

Well its just that I hate them, I hate their culture, I hate their history, and I hate that fact that if they had to wear glasses the would have eight eyes. Once ME3 comes around I'm going to make sure that the blinks get a raw deal. I'm hoping for an option to start a bloody slave revolt and tear down the caste system. Or letting the Repears cull them all would work as well Posted Image

I'm thinking that there's a simpler answer to this.  When I feel contempt for Batarians, I don't take into account their thoughts on slavery or their relationship with the Council.  You know what I do notice?  Not a single Batarian in the series has any redeemable attribute.  They're always portrayed as predjudiced, selfish, stupid dicks.

The writers give us no reason to like them, and every reason to hate them.  I would actually support one as a future squad member to make the species seem less flat and uninteresting.  You know, sort of like a "Batarian Garrus" who would bring depth to an otherwise unlikeable species.

Then you haven't paid enough attention.  There are batarians who will listen to reason if given the chance (Charn, guys on Mordin's recruitment), one who can be persuaded to re-evaluate his whole attitude regarding humans (the sick one on Mordin's recruit), another portrayed as a sympathetic victim of extortion (the guy the Blue Suns locked in his apartment for "quarantine" reasons, and who died in there), one who's perfectly civil and even friendly (Marsh the shopkeeper), and, as mentioned, one who joined Garrus in his efforts to clean up Omega.  Salkie the merc isn't a jerk either, whatever you may think of his career choices.

It seems like you're getting a little nit-picky.  My point was that Batarians almost never act in a way that makes them remotely likable.  They're written as prejudiced jerks.  Sure, if you take the Paragon route you can sometimes convince them to change their way of thinking, but the fact that some of them listen to reason doesn't make them likable characters.

Way too many people are PC, I'll judge a whole race on its history, Batarian culture is backwards and it sounds corrupt.... Batarians are natural bad guys.

No, cannot really hate the entire batarian race. Not with the examples Didymos posted. But people do take issue when a group tries to drop an asteroid on an unsuspecting human colony or torture a little girl until she's afflicted with Stockholm syndrome.

Those would be the reasons humans hate batarians. That said, I want to see a batarian squadmate to get a viewpoint on the other side of the fence

My colonist Shepard from Mindoir has every reason in the world to be suspicious and intolerant of batarians, especially after BDtS. He does understand that there are exceptions to every rule of course, but he'll persecute with extreme prejudice any batarian that runs afoul of him by taking or holding slaves, threatening to blow up civilians, or even just looking at him cross-eyed like that chump outside Afterlife.
