Except we encounter MANY asari who are not slavers.  Same with humans and turians.  With the lone exception of the tech in the squad Garrus had in Omega, there are almost no batarians with noble or honorable intent.  Some are less bastards than others but none are exactly nice.  Even the sick batarian on Mordin recruitment mission is a bigot unless you resucue him.

That said, I'm almost certain there are many (millions if not billions) of batarians who are victim of injustice at the hands of their own race/species but we have yet to encounter them.  Maybe ME3 or a DLC will introduce us to this.

I don't know Anto might be a great drinking bud for my renegade Shepard if I got the chance to know him.  We don't get a chance to do anything like that with individual batarians.

Of course the flip side is the hegemony probaly propagandizes humans as the galactic scourge, the evil, and killer of batarian babies. Shooting them all dead isn't going to correct that misconception.

Batarians always tryin to enslave or nuke human colonies doesn't help their cause much either.  I'm pretty sure the "average" batarian is fairly oppressed under the batarian ruling class as I doubt they only enslave humans given the role of slavery in their society has likely been around longer than when humans first encountered other aliens..

To my way of thinking, any sort of lasting peace between the Systems Alliance and the Batarian Hegemony (or its successor) must include three things, in order:
 
1)      An immediate and unequivocal end to the practice of taking non-batarians as slaves. The Hegemony must not only end this practice, but repudiate and condemn it and all who practice it in the strongest possible terms. Compliance should be monitored by both the Systems Alliance and the Citadel Council.
 
2)      STEEP indemnity and reparation payments to both individual humans damaged by slavery, and the Systems Alliance as a whole. For the suffering they endured, and the extra costs of defending their citizens against cruel and unwarranted savagery respectively.
 
3)      Strict limits on military and industrial technology. The Skyllian Blitz proved that the batarian Hegemony cannot be trusted. Limiting the technology available to them limits the damage they can do. Again compliance should be monitored by both the Systems Alliance and the Citadel Council.
 
If anyone can think of a way to make this happen without massive loss of life, I’m all ears.

Sounds like the Treaty of Versailles and we all know how that ended.  I'm no advocate for the batarians (far from it) but such measures might be too harsh.  I think Pres. Lincoln had a better approach.

Edit:  That said, I would like to be able to bring the ring leaders of batarians slaver raids and other crimes to justice.  Maybe not so much Lincoln but more post-WWII.  Reunification, trials for the leaders of criminal acts but a soft touch for everyone who was simply swept up in the mess.

We hate the Batarians because the writers want us to hate them.

I know I'm totally shifting gears here and this post is going to be ignored as a result, but one thing that's always bothered me about the Mass Effect universe as a fictional place is that it's partly based on the idea that an entire race or species can be inherently evil and it's okay to hate and therefore kill them. It's kind of funny that this happens in a game by a company who otherwise, not least of all in the same franchise, always makes a point of having non-stereotypical female and homosexual characters. There's a clear anti-sexist and anti-homophobic undercurrent in BW's writing, but yeah, the Volus are all money-grubbing sleazebags and it's totally okay to despise them all. I wonder if they just don't realize this, I'm sure it's not really the intention.

Would you wanna kill every libyan citizen cause of Gaddafi's regime and it's crimes? Mordin said it himself, Genocide is and always should be the LAST option. And there is no cause to genocide the batarians at all, they have not done anything like the rachni did or the reapers are doing.

Which is the main problem associated with the Batarians. People spout the "cultural differences" routine, but don't expect us to sit aside and watch as you do it our own people. Action must be taken agaisnt the Batarians.

I hope so. If my treaty idea was implemented and a Batarian slaver raid occured in Alliance space... the leash would get pulled tighter, and tighter, and tighter for every act of Batarian terrorism thereafter.

Lol. We will place cruisers in orbit where we will use bombers to bomb them until they submit. And then, when the batarians come out, out of their pitiful smoldering base, we will bomb them again!

You have to remember that we have never met an "average Batarian". The Hemegony is a xenophobic, totalitarian government like that of North Korea. All media and communication entering and exiting their territory is monitored and censored and all traffic is heavily restricted.

While I would say it is right to hate the governmet and those Batarians we have met so far I am going to reserve judgement on the species as a whole.

That does not mean they are not our enemies however. We must remain vigilant in the Verge. We do not want another Skyllian Blitz.
