Had-to-say... Go away from this thread, you're pissing a lot of people off with your idea ( which, sorry, but it's stupid).
The Reapers were MADE. CREATED. by someone, either created as a weapon by a species or they are the species themselves "repurposed". It is the only logical answer.

Quite simply the Reapers are an older version of the Geth. Created by a race and then proceed to overthrow them.

And then what? Is that all?
Such topics are needed, simply because many concerned the origins and motives of the Reapers. Many are waiting for is not a trivial explanation.
I play in Mass effect not to kill my free time, to shoot, to help the team and kill the main boss.
I play, to hear the answer to the question - who are Reapers, and what their motives.
But if the answer is that - someone has created a Reapers, but the Reapers are mad and destroyed their masters, and now killing everything - that's what you said, this is really silly and trivial and not logical.
Just remember the conversation with the Sovereign and words of the Harbinger when Shepard was running away from the station and may be you will understand.

What I want to know is if the Reapers base the design of new reaper models after species that were either wiped out by them or about to be wiped out then what are those weird squid thingies that the original models were based on?
that is. Here is a link to a picture that show what Im talking about.

According to ME2, the Reapers were unable to make a Prothean-Reaper. And it wouldn't explain why 99% of them seem to share that same form.
Honestly, the whole "the Reapers reproduce by creating new Reapers in the shape of whatever race they melt down" Shyamalan-esque twist was just the worst kind of trainwreck writing. Can anyone honestly imagine a bipedal 'Iron Giant' Reaper flying through space like Superman. And apparently every other race in the history of the galaxy has looked like either squids or ticks?

You only see a part of the UNFINISHED human-reaper... The finished reaper would've looked much more like a normal reaper, cuttlefish-y...

My interpretation of the human-reaper was this...
Reapers, despite their arrogance(or because of it), recognized humans as being an ideal form. This is because it was a human that was able to lead forces in an effort to destroy one of their own, instilling a sense of admiration for the form(after all, who could kill a god but another god?). They reasoned that creating a reaper in this form would would create an unstoppable force. Their other form may not be based on any previous species, and this could very well be the only ever case in which they wanted to imitate the form of another species.

dispit what people think the reapers could have evolved from a more mattalic based life form or even a resilient bio matter that mixed with it creating in essence a cyborg of sort with the only way of evolving was to incorperate technology into them selves, and if they didn't age like organic life forms do they could have ended up with a serious complex seeing all other life a less then being worthy to look at. A rouge reaper is very possible as if you hear what sovergin tells you and you see how the human reaper is being made each reaper really is a nation on its own with so much life being put into it its possible that the first reaper(s) fused together into something of a group consiouness, now what if those who became the first reaper(s) were also a very stuck up and arrogent or evil race there could have been a large enough group to make another reaper that wanted to help the lesser races. And finally who ever said the reapers were ever from the milkyway galaxy, remember the old say a long time ago in a galaxy far far away.

I think it'd be neat if they were literally the first race to ever evolve in the universe. War-like, they conquered their galaxy, then developed mass-relay technology that would allow them to travel across dark-space. Maybe they then met with another early-evolved race, tried to conquer them, and are still engaged in a universal war across galaxies with this race or others like it. They harvest organic life within conquered galaxies to see if their tech will eventually be able to defeat and conquer their eternal opponents stopping them from domination. Why are they so interested in Shepard? They want his genetic mutation that allows him to defeat opponents even in the face of insurmountable odds.
Just a guess. One thing is for certain, anything Sovereign said should be taken with a grain of salt, as it definitely had quite the god complex.

I don't know who they are, but getting 'em to the centre of the galaxy would be enough to tear them apart:)
