Ok so ive played pretty much every other class in the game because ive had experience with those types of classes in other games. However, ive never played a mage or caster type besides a priest in wow when it came out.

So im not really sure if this has been answered or not or if the choices matter at all, so i aplogize if this is wasting your time, just need some pointers.

I want to start a mage, well 2, one more gears towards spells and one AW/BM.

I just want to know what skill set i should be gearing more towards at the beginning. What i mean is whether to spec
in only primal, entropy, spirit etc. Or to get certain ones from each.

as for later in the game what would be best to do high dps. ive heard that primal is good dps and crowd control but it seems that everyone goes in that spec. How about entropy/spirit. with all the DoT's and the buffs, would that be a good combo.

Thanks for the help.

Primal has the hard hitting damage spells... as a rule of thumb the bigger the damage you do then the more threat you will generate on the bad guys (just like in wow).

Spells; :wizard:
Every spell has a good time/ target to use it but it's up to you to work out if you want to burn them or freeze them... I think you should have a look at these spell combinations before you decide.

Skills;
I think 'Combat training' and 'Coercion' are best for a mage then add a point in what ever else you like as well... we don't need many skills.

So, isnt aggro for a mage a bad thing lol. Mages cant really handle much damage unless using copious amounts of sustainables and then mana is pooped.

Thanks for the link. Will check it out.

For myself, Aggro is generally a non-issue. In fact, sometimes having the target start coming towards the caster is helpful.

As for killer spells, the Virulent Walking Bomb(3) line is helpful, and I have been informed that the Death (4), Sleeping (4), and Stinging Swarm (4) spells are also good for dmg. The Hex Line may amplify dmg, and is helpful for Boss control, Glyphs are my Swiss Army knife for versatility, and Mana Clash is great for mages and demons which appear throughout the game.

And I also recommend Survival, as the passive buffs are quite helpful.

How about Willpower vs Magic in terms of stat distribution? After playing with Finn and his huge pool of mana in WH, I'm concerned that I might get more by putting more than 1 point in Willpower for every level up. On the other hand, lyrium pots...

I prefer a higher Will myself; somwhere between 20-30 base appears to work rather well. However, Magic is still the priority as it boots Spellpower, so I set a goal of obtaining base Magic 70+ by the Landsmeet.

Lyrium/ gear (willpower) takes care of my needs but some people like having points in willpower.

If you play on easy/ normal or are the party healer then yes a little Will is nice to have but on the higher levels magic is better bang for your buck. Also I'm not saying that big damage is bad, per say but that you should normally lay down some crowd control (I like 'Grease', 'Blood wound' & 'Paralysis' in order of lest to best) before nuking a room full of nasty, nasty!

P.S.
Yes 'Stinging Swarm' does very nice damage but most non-Shapeshifters don't get as far as 'Spellbloom'... which we like to use for our Swarm form.

Alright, thanks for the help peoples. At the moment im only level 6 and it already seems as if i grab all the aggro in the room.

So far ive been putting 2 points into magic and 1 point into willpower and every other level 3 into magic. I probably already messed up my build but ill post it anyway just to see whether or not i messed up, because frankly at level 6 i can re-roll and not have an issue.

So far i have :

Arcane bold - arcane shield

fire blast - flame weapon - fire ball

rock shield

winter grasp

walking bomb( this is an awesome spell when peoples are clustered)

vulnerability hex

level 3 combat training

i have the seers coat from witch hunt and the belt

so my stats go as follows

str 12

dex 12

will - 33

magic - 38

cunning 13

cons 11

is that fine or should i re roll and focus on one tree?

thanks for the help :)

It all looks ok to me, as I see it you have ‘Rock armor’, ‘Arcane shield’ and ‘Fire weapons’. That’s about the maximum I’d run with (unless tanking you will probably drop one later) because they will eat into your mana. In the late game (around level 14-20) you will run low on tactic-bar slots and should start looking for passive abilities like ‘Staff focus’ and ‘Fade Shield’ as well as situational spells like ‘Spellbloom’ or ‘Curse of Mortality’ because these spells, while sometimes useful don’t normally need to be cast a lot.

I don't even like Rock Armour frankly. Use your tanks to draw the aggro. Force Field is a great spell. I also like to start getting the Mana Clash line about now so you'll have Mana Clash by mid-game.

I made a powerful caster with survivability, it was a Blood Mage/Shapeshifter.
