Has anyone played their engineer without upgrading the drone?
I just dont feel like I use the drone enough to make it a 10 point ability, I usually save it for krogen, vanguards, or bosses and they tend to 1 shot it even at rank 4.
I was thinking of leaving drone @ lvl 2 and overload @ lvl 3 then taking flashbang or an ammo power to max.
something like
6 overload
10 incinerate aoe
3 drone
10 cryoblast aoe
1 ai hacking
10 demo
10 flashbang or ap ammo
I think it leaves a point left over.
Droneless engineer?

I tried persevering with a singularity 3 warp 2 adept, instead focusing on shockwave pull and throw and flashbang, and it failed hard (well not that badly, but required stupidly precise tactics for even the simplest of encounters).
Engineer it might be possible because its other powers can do a good enough job to compensate, with defence stripping and neutralising.

I tried that, too, Curunen. It got to be too arduous after a while. I agree that the Engineer would do better ignoring Drone than the Adept does ignoring Singularity/Warp, but I still wouldn't do it personally. Drone is powerful CC that works through defenses on a very short cooldown. Still, if that's your bag, you could probably get by just fine.

It's quick to cast, it has a short cooldown, and it's a through-defense CC. The combat drone is an incredibly useful tool, and saving it for the stronger enemies is a waste of a class-unique ability. Use it at the beginning of a fight, to distract an enemy while you take out his friends, while you find cover, while you advance on a position, or just to alleviate the pressure on your position.
If you're not playing insanity/hardcore, I don't think it's needed, but still useful for some quick, effective CC. Also, if you're having trouble with your drone dying quickly, re-spec into Explosive Drone.

Ammo powers on an Engineer are redundant. This class is already the top Defence-Destroyer (with the exception of Biotic-Barriers) so any point spent in Ammo Powers is essentially a wasted point as Overload and Incinerate are far more useful. And the Drone is by far the best single Crowd-Control Power in the whole game, which makes the Engineer virtually undestructable if used throughout the fights as noone is going to shoot at you whilst you hammer them with your powers!

Yup, and on top of having excellent damage all around with Incinerate. Especially on organic enemies.
The most useful bonus power would be Improved Flashbang Grenade, just to give the class more AoE CC.

A bit off topic here, but isn't a Sentinel a better defense stripper since it has both Overload and Warp? Or am I missing something?

I was also under the impression that Incinerate had a secret minor bonus vs. Barriers? Around 1.25x, if I remember correctly. Someone noted it around here, I think. Either way, the Engineer is basically not useless vs. all types of protections, so basically it becomes one of the easiest classes to play. Strip, CC out. Done. Also, you can use Drone as a way to drop protections including Barriers, especially with Attack Drone. It's definitely inadvisable to go with a not-maxxxxed Drone, but I'd imagine that your overall gameplay experience wouldn't be totally made or broken based on that decision.
I actually think the Engineer was the 2nd easiest class to play on Insanity. Soldiers first, then Engineers. I used to put Infiltrator 2nd, but I found it too hard to poke out for Sniper headshots because Cloak makes enemies sit back into cover. None of those problems with the Soldier or the Engineer (in fact, Engineer makes for easy headshots since Drone pushes doods out of cover).

Well, Engineers have Incinerate which can drop the defenses of multiple foes with a single cast. It's too different from Warp, though, to draw much of an accurate comparison. Both have their advantages.

Is aoe Incinerate better than aoe Warp in that regard? I'm not trying to push anything. Just curious.

To get the radius damage from Warp you need to set up with either Pull, Singularity or Slam for the Warp Bomb, whereas aoe Incinerate will always hit multiple targets if they're there.
That said an Unstable Warp bomb has a 7 meter radius compared to the 3 meters of Incinerate so each has their pros and cons.

I play the Engineer because they can use drones and AI Hacking - the most fun abilities this class has IMHO. I think it's pointless to play Engineer without using their distinctive powers - every class can use Stasis against powerful enemies for CC btw. If defense stripping is your thing Sentinels are probably more to your liking - they can strip all defenses, can use powers (a little) faster and have Tech Armor.
I don't like Shepard wasting his/her cooldown to take down defenses - I rather deliver the killing blow myself and use squad to deal with protection first. Engineers are flexible; they can be equally capable at defense stripping and CC - Neural Shock is my favorite bonus power for Enineers and I use shotgun bonus weapon.

Drone gets the most additional health a level 2.But i wouldnt only use it at bosses.

The problem I see with low level drones is their attack rates are slow, so the target isn't completely locked own and would still attack you especially YMIRs, Praetorians, and varrens.

It's a less that the attack rate of a Level 1-3 drone is slow and more that it only affects shields. Until you evolve it, it's damage output is marginal to non-existent. It's sole use before then is as a distraction, even against enemies with shields up as your overload will likely be faster then it at level 1. However, as a distraction, it seems to be pretty well unmatched for the time it remains active.

Maybe i just dont use it right.
I play on insanity, i tried infiltrator but the engineer just has so many cool tools it felt the infiltrator felt boring.
I usually slap a drone on something to occupy it while i charge my gps and melt its face.
I usually run with mord for the fun aoe incinerate/snap freezes
I dont have any trouble playing and burn through most missions pretty aggressive.
