Soldier hating? No, just tired of the class. Been playing FPS's since they came out, and the run 'n' gun only format has become far too old and boring. Its the least challenging out of all the classes as so little tactics are required.

It really depends on how you play the Soldier. If you turtle constantly waiting for AR to cooldown instead of aggressively marching through the battlefield, then yes, no real tactics are required. Any class can do this.

When you play aggressively there's a lot more weighing of risk vs. reward. You could argue that the relative safety of moving around with AR on makes even aggressive play easy as a Soldier, but you can also argue the same for Charge, Singularity, Tech Armor, Combat Drone, and Tactical Cloak.

No weapon class in the game is as fun, to me, as Shotguns.  With that being said, here are my suggestions:

Easiest time:  Assault Sentinel with Shotguns.  Early game you won't be unstoppable, but once you get Assault Armor, Guardian, and your shotgun you will be.  Plus there's always the fun of rapid Warpbombings if you bring two Pull-bot squadmates.  Recommended build:
Throw Field / Heavy Warp / Assault Armor / Guardian / Area Drain

Most fun:  Vanguard.  This class can have quiet a tough learning curve on Insanity but once mastered there no more thrilling constantly in the red but still slaughtering gameplay.  Max Heavy Charge and Champion first, and once you do Charge constantly (but still tactically) for the 100% shield regen it provides.  To get a good idea of how a Vanguard should be played, watch sinosleep's beginner insanity vanguard video series, first vid here.  Recommended builds:
Inferno Ammo / Squad Cryo Ammo / Heavy Charge / Champion / Crippling Slam
or
Inferno Ammo / Squad Cryo Ammo / Heavy Charge / 2 Shockwave / 1 Pull / Champion / 3 Stasis

For those already experienced with shotgunning with the above two classes, I think recommend these:

Shotgun Infiltrator.  This class can almost seem a little harder when compared to the above two at first.  With the Vanguard, one skill gets him both in perfect shotgunning position and regens his shield's full.  With Infiltrator, one skill gets in you shotgunning range and provides a damage boost, but actually halts your shield and health regeneration!  Still, a highly tactical class that requires making good use of both your Shotgun and your Viper.  Recommended reading and viewing here.  Recommend builds:
3 Disruptor Ammo / Squad Cryo Ammo / Assassination Cloak / Incineration Blast / 2 Hacking / Agent / 1 Neural Shock
or
3 Disruptor Ammo / Squad Cryo Ammo / Assassination Cloak / 2 Incinerate / 1 Hacking / Agent / Neural Shockwave

Shotgun Engineer.  Again, as with the Shotgun Infiltrator, this class can almost seem a little harder when compared to the first two.  The way to constantly engage in cqc is through smart use of your crowd control abilities.  This goes especially for your Drone, which needs to be used quiet differently than with non-shotgun Engineers.  Very tatical class that requires making good use of all your crowd control along with your Shotgun.  Engineers should be respecced often.  Recommended reading and viewing here.  Recommended builds:
Area Overload / Incineration Blast / Attack Drone / 1 Cryo Blast / Demolisher / Neural Shockwave
or
Attack Drone / Full Cryo Blast / Improved Hacking / Demolisher / Area Drain
or (if you want balanced instead of switching between the two specialized buils)
Area Overload / Incineration Blast / Attack Drone / 3 Cryo Blast / 2 Hacking / Demolisher / 1 Neural Shock

Shotgun Adept.  Again as with the above two, this class can almost seem a little harder when compared to the Shotgun Sentinel and Vanguard.  If you go with the Barrier variant, it probably would be a little easier than the Shotgun Infiltrator and Engineer.  This is one I haven't personally played yet, but seems it also requires smart use of crowd control abilities to get in range.  Recommended read and viewing here.  Recommend builds seem to be:
Heavy Warp / 1 Throw / Heavy Singularity / Pull Field / Bastion / Heavy Barrier
or
Heavy Warp / 1 Throw / Heavy Singularity / Pull Field / Bastion / Deep Stasis

edit:  guess i went over shotguns with every class but a soldier haha.  wasn't my original intent but the ramble is strong with this one.  I also realize i wrote this response before reading the rest of the thread or even all the OP... my bad.  Seems he already eliminated some of these classes.

I dont use AR at all. Even playing as a shotgun junky soldier and heading into the thick of it, I dont need to use it.

18 years of playing FPS has probably given me the twitchy reflexes of a tomcat on meth.

This thread should have moved from the no-spoiler section sooner. :pinched:

Could be an interesting idea to play Soldier and respec all points out of AR entirely and use Fortification, Barrier, or Geth Shield Boost as your "class" skill. I think I'll try it on PS3.
