I've recently reinstalled ME2 on my new desktop, but now I am experiencing a strange crash on Illium, while walking down the hallway next to Liara's stairs/office.  Oddly, it doesn't crash at a door, but smack in the middle of that short hallway where there shouldn't be any room loading going on.  This is happening across all characters and at all points in the story line.  Any ideas?  I am now running WIndows 7 (64), before was XP sp3.  All DLC is installed.

ME2 v1.02 - Disc version

i7 930 @3.36 GHz
6GB RAM
ATI 5750 X 2 (ATI catalyst 10.12)
Windows 7 64-bit/DirectX 10.0 (March 2009-later)

Did you install DX9.0c that is on the disk, or did you skip the installation of it, thinking DX10 would do as it is newer? If thats the case, install the version thats on the disk. ME2 specifically requires that version.

Also, do you have LotSB installed? This sounds like a problem some are reportnig after they have installed it.

When you reinstalled, did you do it all at once, including DLC, or did you install the game, let it sit for a while (week, month etc) and then do the DLC later?

I had the same issue. I'd run down down the hall from the Trading floor to the Shipping area and crash hard. I tried everything. I fiddled all the graphics settings to low. Turned off sound, etc., etc. I even followed the uninstall instructions on this thread:

Turned off UAC and reinstalled the game and all the DLC, in the order they were released. I tried that twice, with no joy. Finally, after the second reinstall, I just turned around, boarded the Normandy, and then landed again on Ilium. I ran back to the hallway and made it to Shipping without a problem. Since then, no crashes. But the save game I have right before that hallway still causes the crash.

My system specs are similar to yours:

Xeon @ 3.3GHz

12GB RAM

Radeon 5870

Windows 7 64-bit/DirectX 10.0 (March 2009-later)

And we also came to same solution... I re-installed once (and all the DLC) and the problem became worse. The "crash zone" expanded to the entire trading floor on Illium. Re-installed a 2nd time, loaded a prior save from off planet, and managed to sneak by with one character. It still seems like an odd place for a crash.

The DX 9.0 from the disc is installed.

Good question of Shadow Broker...  I had already finished 2 playthroughs before LotSB and this is my first time back on Illium since I installed it.  My instinct was to blame WIndows 7 (64), but it does seem more likely to be connected to LotSB.  The crash spot is more or less directly under where Liara's desk would be on the floor above.

Had this problem on 2 i7s, but not on my previous Core 2.

Rampage II Gene and Rampage III Formula
Win 7 x64
12 GB of RAM
Direct X 11

Radeon 5750 and 6750

Both loaded on SSDs. One Vertex 2 in RAID 0, another Vertex 3 in RAID 0 (Before you say anything it also happened on my single 240 GB Vertex 2).

Same thing after patch 1.02 and 1.03, so with ME3 out in a few months therre is little hope in fixing this.

What the heck is triggering here?

Looks like they have a fix here:

Posting this in case someone stumbles across this topic first like I did.

There is no 1.03 patch for ME2.

Disable shadows (dynamic and environment) for this part of Illium.
Its a strange bug that only affects some users, and from memory, seems more prevalent on Radeon cards than Geforce. Could be related to either a particular manufacturer, or conflict within Catalyst and PhysX revisions.

I have only used ATi cards for the last few generations, and I never had this problem with the X1900XT or HD5870, the two cards I ran through ME2. The 5870 was moved from an older machine to a newer machine, both AMD platforms.

Perhaps the bug only affects Intel users with AMD/ATi cards?

Maybe. But it's really odd that it only happens in that one area of that game, mid-hallway, where a bark is triggered, and only playing in full-screen mode.

I had the same issue, for your info I have an Intel-Nvidia combination.

I was getting sick of those crashes, I tried closing every program I had running but still the same, then I tried to cross that area walking and no more crashes, I know, it's strange, very strange, but no I always walk on that area and I haven't had more crashes.

Thanks for the input on having the crashes on Nvidia based cards. Its definately a strange one. The 2 fixes are either play that area windowed, or to disable shadows.

Personally, I havent encountered it, so not being able to replicate it means I cant find out the exact cause.
