Hey everone, I just got NWN2 with 3 other people (via steam) hoping we could all play together.  We started out by being able to make a game, but having no one be able to join (firewalls or something).  We disabled all the firewalls, I port forwarded my router (as best I could with portforward.com websites help) though I am unsure if I have all the right ports it seems like there are a ton of them and alot of different forums say alot of different things.  2 computers are connected to the internet via the same router/modem (I have changed one computers player IDs) .  No one is in a university so no router problems there, and when I tried contacting Atari they told me that's too bad and I should read the forums or contact my network admin.  I don't have a network admin. and the forums have yet to help me.

Now when I try to create a game on my computer it tells me "
Attempting to find server
IP=127.0.0.1:5121
Connection error:
Server is not responding (timed out). "

OTHER INFO:
I have played steam games with these same 3 other people just fine, L4D, TF2 etc.
I am running win 7, the other computers are win7, XP, and vista.
My internet connection is through a company called windstream.

Can anyone please please step by step me through this process, none of us are very computer savy.

Thanks!

Are you creating the game via NWServer? If so, what is the IP stated there, as it may be attempting to bind to an IP from a running VPN. If that is the case, you as the host, navigate to Control Panel\\Network and Internet\\Network Connections. You will see a list of adapters, such as Local Area Conneciton. In this window, hit your left Alt key, in the dropped menu, click Advanced, then click Advanced Settings. The Adapters and Bindings window will display a prioritized list. If your VPN software such as Hamachi has a higher priority than that of your connected device to your switch / hub / router, then move your connected device higher in the list. Press Okay, and try to host the server again.

Thanks, but I checked and that was not the problem. As far as I know I am attempting to create the game in an NWserver. I just go to multiplayer => sign in=> New game=> give the server a name and click next. That's when I get the error. If it helps the server port is 5121. There is no IP stated except what I posted up top in the error message.

Do both computers have different IP addresses?

The 127.0.0.1 is essentially your own computer.

Look in your install directory - find the nwn2server.exe application and use that to launch your module.

For some routers there is a known issue that while the port is being used by one machine, it will not reliably open it to forward to a second machine such as the Linksys E1000. Attempt a router restart after assigning the port forward to your game server's PC internal IP address and port.

I can make games now, though no one else online sees them.  I checked the box marked post to internet, but still nothing.

I checked using nwn2server.exe and both computers do indeed have a different IP address. How do I reset the router, can I just unplug it and plug it back in after a couple of minutes or do I need to contact my ISP?
I tried just unpluging it, to no avail.

When someone else makes a game it comes up with an error message"
The server appears to be behind a firewall or network and may not be reachable
Attempting to find server.
IP=98.18.70.96:5121
Connection error:
Server is not responding (timed out)

Thanks for the help so far guys!

Depending on the model, unplugging and plugging back in is fine. Be forewarned however that some older routers lose their set configurations. If you've experienced a power outage in your residence while in ownership of that router and no ill effects of connectivity occurred after restored power, then a restart in that way is fine. Double check to make sure that the internal IP (ipconfig in command line, or if set right, the IP that nwserver.exe is reporting you to have) is the IP to which the port (default is 5121) is forwarded to.

Visavant: The IPv4 address is the same number as the one in nwserver, with the exception that the one in nwserver is followed by ":5121". IE: Command prompt X.XXX.XXX.XX and nwserver is X.XXX.XXX.XX:5121. I don't know what you meant by "... is the IP to which the port (default is 5121) is forwarded to."

Sorry I'm not that computer savy I know that makes it tougher, but I do appreciate it.

Is nwn2server.exe excluded from your blocked list?

It's not blocked on my firewall if that's what you mean. I can open nwn2server.exe just fine, but I can't see what you would really do with it.

Really?

So the drop downs where you can select the module you want to load, the game type options and the Load button don't twig anything?

This link is for starting PWs, but it might help point you in the right direction.

I don't know what they would twig, I can start the server and log directly in via my IP address but no one else can log into the game. Does everyone's computer have to port forward every port?

When I use ipconfig/all in the cmd prompt I found that both computers connected on the same router have the same IPv4 address are the exact same. Also in the same prompt I found that "IP routing enabled" is turned off. Should that be turned on?

The network is probably having issues if you port forwarded to your router's IP address. You should forward 5120-5300 UDP (to be safe) and 27900 UDP to your server's IP address. Since this can change if you're set to have dynamic IP addresses, you can avoid this by setting a static IP for the server.

You can do this on Windows 7 by following this tutorial: http://blog.mclaughl...ws-7-static-ip/

Make sure that the static IP you set is the same as the one your forwarded your ports to. This should allow both networked and non-networked clients see you.

I believe 5121 is the client port and 5120 is the server port, I open up a port range as follows below, which is exactly the same as hosting NWN 1 (see This Link  for details)...

Chart 2: Port Forwarding with a Router
Name . Port Range . Prot . Server Static IP
NWN2A . 5120 to 5129 . TCPUDP . 192.168.1.12
NWN2B . 6667 to 6667 . TCPUDP . 192.168.1.12

You need to make sure that the static IP address you choose falls in your router's range. (For example, Linksys is typically 192.168.1.XXX.) The DNS server and default gateway will both be the base IP address for your router (the one you type in to access is (for example, Linksys is typically 192.168.1.1). If you use his numbers on the blog you won't have internet access.

5121 is the default server port and will accept connections based on it's announcement to Gamespy without hindrance so long as the port is open through firewalls both SW/HW.

Quite right, Visavant, I tend to get those turned around.

Thanks for all the help guys, I have finally been able to get my ip address to a static one, I have port forwarded every port on TCP and UDP that was suggested and I could still connect to the internet. I thought I was golden, but alas the computer connected to the same router could not connect to my game. :( I have not tried other computers connecting, but I will continue trying and post the final solution once I have it. I have to be getting close. If any one has any other ideas for me keep them coming!

Success! After creating a static port instructions here http://portforward.c...static-win7.htm (sorry I don't know how to hyperlink), and port forward everything to that static IP Instructions also on http://portforward.com/ I was able to open nw2 server and have another computer do a "direct connect" to my static IP address. It has only been tried on the computer connected to the same router, but it did work. I will try other computers in a couple of days and verify my results. Thank you thank you thank you to everyone that helped I certainly could have never figured it out on my own! This forum is great!

Glad to hear it worked. If external users can't connect to your server, triple check your ports.

I did all this and now we can get on and play! Thank you so much big help but now for some reason my game crashes after a few minutes in the character creator I haven't actually got in game yet to see if it works there.
