Who do/would you consider the Canon Warden, a Male Human Warrior because of the 2 CG Trailers or a Human Mage because he/she will be a relative of DA II's Hawke and his/her siblings (social.bioware.com/forum/1/topic/141/index/4962962&lf=8).
Maybe both in one, a Male Mage Arcane Warrior with Big Armor (his eyes glow in both trailers and in one of them he tuns his sword aflame, could imply magic)?

Also, if you wanted to recreate the Warden from the Sacred Ashes Trailer, how easy would be to do his face which specializations would you give him?

This seems interesting. An Arcane warrior would also match what Hawke seems to do in the DA 2 trailer. I'm partial to Arcane Warriors myself, and I imagine the warden's face would not be too difficult to make your warden similar to.

Likewise, I find this very interesting.  I'm ashamed to admit it, but I never saw the CGI trailer until reading this thread (since DA:O had always been a must-have for me).  Having seen this...new ideas arise.

The CGI Warden a Human Male Traditional Warrior or Mage Arcane Warrior?

The cinematic trailer's a little bit different than actual gameplay, but for the sake of this exercise let's try to keep the spirit of it, even though the Ashes CGI in particular is just extra super awesome.  I'll break them just my take here.

Using armour, sword & shield in both the Grey Warden and Ashes trailers - both the Traditional and Arcane Warrior can do this.  He's got the Warden set, which IMHO slightly favours the Traditional Warrior due to its high fatigue.  Result - slight favour to Traditional Warrior.

Using the shield to bash people, particularly in the Ashes trailer - this looks like the Shield talents from the Traditional Warrior.  However, you notice even the Arcane Warrior does a lot of the moves in his slow-mo kills, like spinning to shield a hit then completing the turn with a killing stroke.  Result - slight favour to traditional Warrior.

Enchanting sword and glowing eyes in both trailers - the flaming sword could be a Rune benefit or a party member's weapon spell, but certainly favours the Arcane Warrior more (as he's shown to be alone and concentrating to turn on the blade's flame like a Mage).  The glowing eyes could be a side-effect of the Darkspawn taint, but it's hard to say as neither Duncan, Alistair nor Riordian do that.  It looks more like the Arcane Warrior's Combat Magic.  Funnily enough, he turns on the glowing eyes in the same way I would enable Combat Magic...either when opening a door to a room or about to attack with my sword.  Result - slight favour to Arcane Warrior.

But then there's also...

DA2's Hawke - it's exactly like the OP's link, the Human Mage is related to DA2's protagonist, apparently maternal cousins as they're both surnamed Amell.  There's even some family resemblance in the tra.  Result - huge favour to the Arcane Warrior IMHO, but largely due to the Human Mage surname.

Reproducing the CGI Warden's face

Here's my take, based on 3 very simple design principes I use based on customising faces in Bioware games:

- keep it as similar as possible...perfection is impossible, but you can get quite close
- keep it simple by tweaking rather than designing from scratch, as expressions tend to look weird in-game
- the eyes convey interest, the jaw intensity...basically, you want a sharper jaw, again due to in-game expressions

I based my design on this shot as it captures both the face and the typical facial expression of this Warden:

My 1st attempt by tweaking one of the templates:

My 2nd attempt:

I'm interested to know which of the 2 you like more.  I've already captured a step-by-step via screenshots and I'm willing to share.

There is a splash scene of the PC mage with white hair. Why don't y'all ever argue she is canon?

The guy from the trailers seems to be from the cut human commoner origin. I mean, what Noble has a tribal tattoo over his face?

I think that dude in the trailer looks kind of too old, too. PC is assumed to be 18-25. You are not suppose to play some grizzle veteran. I remember this because some people got pissed when the writers said it back on the old forums.

The trailer was made by BLUR.
Of course they are gonna add some extra stuff like glowing eyes when the Warden senses the darkspawn, or the flaming sword when opening the Deep Roads(he doesnt even use it during fights) for his Calling. Neither of them are in the game, thus not really validating the Arcane Warrior statement.
Same goes for the tattoo, armor and weapons. And no, Warden Commander armor does not come even close.:(

Just because the Mage Warden related to the Hawkes, doesnt mean he should be canon.

The canon warden is an elf woman named Aithne Tabris. She is a dual wielding rogue who uses Fang and Rose's Thorn, wears Armour of the Provocateur and carries the Sorrows of Arlathan as her secondary. She romanced Zevran. She killed Loghain and had Alistair marry Anora. She killed the Architect and fought at Amaranthine. Both Amaranthine and Vigils Keep were saved. Bhelen is King of Orzammar. Lanaya is Keeper for the Dalish. Avernus is just minutes away from a true breakthrough. If he could use living test subjects he'd be there already.

Any other Warden is a pale imitation and non canonical.

Now you know. :wizard:

Nope. Female Mage is canon Warden. And I don't even care that this forum has been dead for a year :P

I think the developers have pretty much given up on the idea of there being a canon warden. There's the trailer warden/s, the comics warden, the novel/books warden, the-multiple-backgrounds-from-DA2-wardens, and of course the player wardens, and all of them are legit afaik.

My guess is the "canon Warden" is a male warrior Cousland with the S&S ability. Aren't most games?

With that said, I don't care what the "canon Warden" is. I tend to find "default" characters the most boring (in every game, from NWN to now) and I enjoy picking characters that deviate from the default. I don't care if it doesn't make as much sense to play an elf in NWN, or that a casteless dwarf is the furthest removed from the main DA:O storyline, I find their deviation infinitely more fascinating than yet another standard Hero's Journey where a human fighter goes through the fantasy motions.

I feel a Human Noble Warden would be the most canon, male or female.

A Male Human Noble would probably be the default.

Personally though, narrativewise I think a Dalish Elf Warden makes the most sense. The Dalish Elf's story begun with the Eluvian Mirror and ended with it.

That's quite good.... I hadn't realized that.   It certainly would bring the Dalish Elf narrative into a neat circle.

Depends on your perspective of course as all things do.

I personaly agree that the male dalish elf is a prime canidate for a canon warden, due to their neutrality in the story and the little involvment they have. It makes more sense for them to be a hardcore Grey Warden if they have no political views or ties to Ferelden and beliving the Grey Wardens are their new Clan.

The other Origins save city elf are too involved in the politics, drama and greater world events. To make unbiased deicisions reguarding Ferelden. (City Elf is just going to be anti-human nobility really)

Keep in mind the Trailer Warden Malcom was just one of developers characters they were playing while testing the game.

Also look at certain universal plot flags the developers keep in Awakening and Dragon Age 2, theres even some constants with the route Alistair took in the darkspawn chronicles.

I personaly like the Duncan approach to the game Pragmatic and doing everything that benefits the Grey Wardens and combating the Blight by any means nessasary.

Edit: On Further thought i also leaning towards a Canon Warden to have been a Rogue, what with all the Coecison, Lockpicking and stealing and such that goes on. Its much simpler to be a Warden rogue. Follow in Duncans footsteps as it were.
So im leaning towards male dalish rogue.

With the new comics we see what the Canon choices are for a number of party members.

Except that David Gaider himself said the comics are not canon, and should not be considered canon. There is no canon Warden, only what the player prefers, just like there is no canon Hawke.

The comics are not canon. This cannot be emphasized enough.

So say it along with me: The comics are not canon. THE COMICS ARE NOT CANON.

Bravo. *slow clap*

so yeah this is late and all but ill post any ways.

I dare say your right. Even in DA2 you have some link moreso then with any other. Maybe except the human mage. But that only connects you to Hawke and only as a second or third cousin. The fact that the Eluvian makes its way from game one to Witch Hunt then to DA2 leaves you with more then that crazy mirror feeling when playing DA2. Now if another mirror makes its way into DA3 then mabe we can say that Dalish Elf is cannon. But for now all I can say is it holds more water then the rest.

Yeah, this is late too, but this has been an interesting thread to read so I'll give it a shot.

The thread has spun a little bit away from the OP's original point.  I don't know about you, but I've played DAO through at least 20 or 25 times with various characters and orientations.  It's like rereading a book to me.  And I've had a couple of incarnations I've repeated and honed just because I found them so personally appealing.  I think the OP was asking for a biography of our favorite avatar.

Mine was a male Human Noble dual-wield warrior, by the way, the greatest warrior in Ferelden and didn't he just know it?  He was a cad, though, who romanced Iona and then Morrigan, whom he ditched for Leliana, whom he ditched for Anora while giving Morrigan the golden mirror and performing the DR with her.  He also double-crossed Harrowmont in order to triple-cross Bhelen, just to let them know who was really calling the shots in Orzammer.  I also liked playing a female Elven Mage, who figured an amateur like Jowan deserved what he got for trying to hide blood magery from her in the first place.  She traded Connor's soul to the Desire Demon for its magic bean, naturally, and the only reason she nixed the DR is because she wanted to snag the AD's spirit for herself in order to arise from her tomb in Weisshaupt just in time for Awakening.  Why should Morrigan have all the fun?  I always thought Alistair was unexpectedly kingly at her funeral, too.

But this thread has warped into a discussion of which origin story best fits with the common events from DAO and DA2.  The case for the Dalish Elf is a good one because the Eluvian is the only meaningful plot point that carries over between the two games, other than a variable cameo appearance or passing dialogue reference.  But how did the Dalish Elf's story end with the Eluvian?  As I recall, you go back to camp and when the Shrieks attack, one of them is Tamlen.  So is the Eluvian tainted?  In DA2 it's a doorway for a demon, or at least the lure a demon uses to ensnare Merrill and Marethari.  For Morrigan in Witch Hunt, though, it's something else again.

And that's why I think the "canon warden" is still the male human noble.  Didn't I say he was a cad?  He's a better pedigree for the OGB than any of the other origins, and the Eluvian is all about OGB, and I know that because Sandal told me he heard it from Flemeth.  So there!

that is all good and all. however lets look at Flemeth. yes that wounderful  "person" who shows up at strange but timely moments. she is the one person who i can point to and say....... connected to the same clan/tribe the Dalish elf warden comes from. just another pice to conect to the Dalish elf warden. the reason we know that she has a connection to them is beause of all the Dalish clan/tribe she sends you to find that one when your on your way to Kirkwall.

yes i know that its because that's the clan/tribe that's close to there because thats how it was written.
(but put that aside for the moment.)

why not have a conection with the clan/tribe that Ariane was from. the one who goes with you to find Morrigan in Witch Hunt. they have more knowledge on the Eluvian.
if I remember correctly the Dalish elf warden's clan was the same clan that Flemeth accounterd all them years ago. Along wit Maric and Loghan.
not only that but as far as we know the Dalish elf wardens clan keepers use the same type of magic that Flemeth does. we know this because it is stated when the Dalish elf warden talks to Morrigan about her shapeshifting magic.
she helps Alistair because she knows who he is. why or how she know is it might have something to do with Maric. but that is for another time. so her helping the Dalish elf warden would also be more binifiting for her because they hold the knowlege of how to release her from her trinket thingy. so that's all i have to say about that for now. if I find more then i may post it but for now this is all.
