high fructose corn syrup will rot your teeth and make you fat.
This is a common misunderstanding, perpetuated (probably with the best of intentions) by people who see fat kids with bad teeth drinking soda and assume a causal relationship.
High fructose corn syrup, at least the kind most commonly found in sodas, is composed of about 55% fructose and about 45% glucose. Table sugar or sucrose is composed of about half of each. They are extremely similar in composition and nutritional value. Excess calories make you fat. Doesn't matter where they come from. Sugar and HFCS do not have any significant differences in how they are metabolized, including the speeds at which they are broken down into their component parts and enter the bloodstream. Neither will raise blood glucose levels significantly faster nor trigger a much greater insulin response than the other. I doubt we have heard the end of the debate, but no controlled, double-blinded study will ever say anything different. If one does, look to the motivations of those behind it.
And not brushing your teeth and bad genetics rot your teeth./hijack (sorry)
