I know there are a million posts about this but I remember one of the devs saying if they got their way some lady hawke stuff would be released sometime in January. Now I KNOW January isn't over yet but I was just wondering if anyone has heard anything more about Lady Hawke voice acting or any release of future information on DA:2 soon?

She had better be British.

She is (English, I mean). She sounds good. I like her better than Male Hawke, but that's just my personal preference. I'm sure you'll hear her soon enough.

If she calls femHawke "Kitten," there had better be a renegade interrupt.

She doesn't call femHawke "kitten".

Can you give us a little tip?

I could, but I won't. Puissance.

It's French. It means "strength", or in this context, patience.

As to the accents in Dragon Age: Origins, Tim Curry and Simon Templeman aside of course, I noticed that a lot of the British accents were fake, particularly the player soundsets where it was painfully obvious.

Sorry, but that's simply untrue. Considering the expense we went to in order to record in the UK, it's also kind of sad. Perhaps we needn't have bothered.

Isn't Steve Valentine scottish?

He is, and isn't Claudia Black Australian?

Claudia Black is Australian, and Steve Valentine's accent is authentic. The voices you hear from them are their natural speaking voices. That doesn't really seem to deter some folks from deciding that they (or anyone else) aren't authentic, somehow.

I do wonder about that.  You specifically wanted RP British accents, which isn't the natural accent for a great many English people, let alone Scots or Welshmen.  A voice-actor from the midlands may well have a terrific RP accent he can use, but could it sound fake to someone who knows the RP accent really well?

We don't always require them to use RP. It depends on the character-- sometimes we will specifically ask for a Midlands accent or what have you. That said, there isn't a single actor in the UK who doesn't do RP as well as their natural accent (and most do a variety of other British accents, as well). If they aren't able to do that, they're unlikely to be very successful (with few exceptions, as I understand it), as that's simply a requirement of working in the region.

I wasn't particularly bothered by any of the English accents in DAO, and as a lot of people have pointed out that (even though shes spent a while in London) Claudia Black is Australian and you can't tell her apart from any English/British born VA

Yes, as I understand it Claudia Black moved from Australia to England and lived there for a time-- though she lives in California now (or, at least, she talked about having a home in Los Angeles when she recorded for DAO). So I imagine her accent isn't pure Australian any more than Leliana's is pure Parisian French, but regardless they're very much using their natural voices.

Simply put, the people who are assuming accents that are not their own are the exception in DAO as opposed to the majority. We like people to use their natural voices whenever possible so they can concentrate on the performance as opposed to their voice.

You do realize this is just one person's opinion?

One that we hear quite frequently. It's not an uncommon opinion that DAO is a game filled with fake British accents galore. God help us should we ever go to Orlais and fill our game with so many ear-splittingly fake French accents. Image IPB

There were a lot of people who knew someone from france, spent a lot of time in france,..., and because of that knew without a doubt that lelianas accent was horribly wrong.

Indeed. I've had people claiming to be authoritative experts on French accents who said Leliana's accent was clearly faked and not French at all... as well as people who said they heard British accents every day and swore up and down that characters like Alistair, Anora and others were obviously American actors faking it.

Is every actor using their authentic accent? No, I never said that was the case. The vast majority do, and Kath Soucie is an exception (obviously), but it's also clear that people hear what they want to hear.

Are you seriously sitting on pins and needles waiting just to hear her voice? It's that vital?

Yes. It is actually. I don't plan on rolling male Hawke unless he's the only way of romancing Aveline, IF, by some miracle she is even a potential LI. We just want to hear from her already.

You don't actually need to roll anything until you get the game. I would suggest not getting worked up about what someone does or doesn't sound like at this point.

If you have voiced player character then I would suggest who and how good the voice acting is is pretty damn paramount to one's enjoyment of the game.

It's my instinct to side with the BW staff most times, but ... you have a really, really, really good point here. The voiced protagonist is being promoted as one of the biggest FEATURES in this game. They wouldn't go into release without showing the framed narrative or the new art style. This IS a pretty big deal and you point out exactly why.

And I'm pretty sure you will have a chance to hear it before release. But some people here are making it sound like the only purpose of us releasing the gameplay video or whatever other marketing has gone out was so we could reveal the male Hawke voice-- and if we're not releasing something with the female Hawke voice for that express purpose we must be hiding it.

Come on, now. Get a grip, that's all I ask. :)

We know she's not going to get her own fancy trailer and all that marketing goodness, but just a clip of her talking... It's not that hard to do.

Well, I doubt we'd put out something just to say "here, listen to female Hawke talk!" :)

Though I know you guys would like that and all.

Plus, Mr. Laidlaw said if he had his way, we'd hear her before February. It's two days before February, and we're getting antsy.

Did he, now? Must be one of those iron-clad-promise things, then. I guess we'll have to see what he has in mind.

I've heard Belinda Cornish's voice in game-at least, i believe it's Belinda--and it very fitting. not telling which character(s) it/they is/are, though. :P

Pffft, heck no. If I wanted to give a clue, i would have said that I hear Belinda Cornish's mellifluous voice in our mighty game 17, maybe 19.4 times. I'm not imparting the information on who or what player/s she lends her vocal talents to *wink wink*.

See the difference?

Is it a conspiracy theory?

i really don't know what you're getting at. I'm just here discussing voice acting and Belinda Cornish's voice like everyone else in this thead. I can't help it if some community members are taking my innocent statements out of context or ascribing more meaning to them than I intend.

Actually, I'm messing with your heads because I've been crunching fora long time and it's boring around here late at night after my office mates have gone home and I'm stuck here for an extra hour. Really, people should stop believing things I tell them after 6pm. :)

*hugs all around*

I do know Belinda Cornish, though, and I did hear her voice in-game.

the bolded letters should have spelled "riddle herring," as I was responding to a question of whether my posts were an actual riddle or a red herring.

i think there is some real character in LadyHawke's voice, with some touching moments when that extremely emotional and surprising thing happens. I always tear up a little at that point. And when she's threatening that one person, i always want an option for LadyHawke to get all medieval on them because you can hear in her voice that she really wants to.

It's tough to say whether I like ManHawke 'sor LadyHawke's voice more. i think LadyHawke has a much broader emotional range, while ManHawke's gets to be more epic throughout. I prefer ManHawke's combat barks, but LadyHawke's flirting.

I would compare it to Liam Neeson in "Taken." On the one hand, there's the emotional connection his character has with his daughterand his motivations for rescuing her. On the other hand, it's Liam-bleeping-Neeson kicking the bejeebers out of the bad guys! Both are different, but equally enjoyable.

Not saying ManHawke doesn't have emotional range. i just think LadyHawke has much more of it.

I think Jennifer Hale could do it justice. There's a reason she's so prolific, after all. would I have wished for it to be Jennifer Hale if I was a player? i would say no, simply because she's so prolific, I would like to hear other actors.
