I have pre-ordered and paid in full. I am not going to cancel this purchase based purely on the lack of female Hawke's voice acting presented to us. I would have thought it would be exciting for them to share their "voiced" female Hawke with us, that's all. But now it's just waiting.....waiting...and yes I have other things to do, but I was admittedly too obsessed about this

Sigh. I will love this demo. But that doesn't stop the disappointment.

I know we all tend to oversimplify what the talented BW people have to go through to get this whole 'show on the road', but sometimes I think that they also seem to forget how to chill out and have fun with the people who take a further interest in their product/baby.

This whole begging for hints or samples of Marian's voice acting has turned out to be a futile exercise in futility....an utter waste of time...it's kind of embarrassing now to be honest lol

Bioware: What makes DAII so great is that the main character is voiced this time, so it allows players to feel that their character (Hawke) is more active in the conversation.

Fans: Really? That's great! Can we get a short clip of them?

Bioware: Sure, here's Male Hawke.

Fans: Very nice, and Female Hawke?

Bioware: What about her?

Fans: Can we hear from her as well?

Bioware: Lolno.

Fans: Wait, what?

No. Of course I might if they suddenly announced that fem!Hawke had had to be cut from the game, but hearing her voice ahead of time doesn't bother me. I hadn't heard either gendered Shepard before playing ME. I mean, I'd like to hear her voice, and I know I will on the 22nd if not before, but I'd have liked it in a dev diary or something similar. Heck, I'd like her as the poster-character. But, knowing current gaming conventions, she'd then need to have 5x larger breasts and be wearing a tenth of the clothing, so to be honest I think I'll count my blessings until the Gaming scene at large can handle varying depictions of women.

"A futile exercise in futility" is a rather eloquent and apt way of putting it. But even so, even if we fail (or have already failed), I'll be glad that we tried. These things don't change unless people try. Oh, well, I can hold out hope for DA9! ;)

Personally, I feel like certain game developers really remember their female audience. Bioware in particular was one of the first choose your character games I played where I felt like the gender made a difference.

The problem I feel like is the marketing isn't on the same page. How many women read romance or fantasy novels? How many women like to play the heroine every once in awhile? These games have great characters, story, romance, once they get past working the controller, I think a lot of girls would like these games.

Thing is, they don't know about them because marketing isn't directed at the right people. Just to compare, my brother is more combat, less story, FPS type gamer who rarely plays a game without multiplayer. I am a more story, less combat RPG type gamer who really doesn't care much for multiplayer at all. When you look at Mass Effect 2 for instance, you would think it would be marketed more towards players like me, but instead it seems more focused on gamers like my brother.

Problem is, my brother hates it. I finally got him to try it and he got bored after about 20 minutes. I know the FPS market is large, but it's just not gonna work to market towards that crowd because Bioware's games are geared more towards players like me.

I feel like the marketing world is stuck in the 18-35 yr old male stigma, but the gaming world isn't.

The gaming world is putting out emotional, deep storylines, but the marketing keeps churning out advertising campaigns showing the gore, violence, or immature parts of the game (for instance, dead space "your mom will hate this" campaign.) As a result, these great games are only expanding their market by word of mouth, rather than opening the box a little and trying to advertise to another demographic.

If FemHawke was cut from the game, I'd cancel my pre-order. Seriously. And I ordered the Signature Edition.

So thank goodness we have FemHawke. Yay, FemHawke! You rock!

If it's a matter marketing not having enough time to make a video showcasing Lady Hawke before the demo comes out.  I'd be more than willing to help out.  ;)  It would be a guaranteed* viral success.

Excellent points.

I still like my idea for a commercial where FemHawke is sitting there complaining about MaleHawke (shows clips of MaleHawke fighting while she's complaining) and then she gets a chance to show what she can do when some enemy shows up and interrupts her dialogue, and then she comes back to the camera and is all "What was I saying? Oh right, Garrett. That attention wh0re".

It would be awesome and it would show female gamers, and girls that are new to gaming, that there's something out there for them.

I thought they'd do better this time than with femshep. But no, femhawke is also just a small print footnote.

edit: with respect to marketing and stuff

Well it's certainly clear now that Bioware has never had any intention of treating Lady Hawke as anything more than an afterthought to more important things, like Male Hawke's beard.

If you are talking about the marketing department, I'd agree. I really don't think the developers treated her as the stepchild.

Male Hawke's beard.

Andraste's Beard, passed down from the Lady herself, has been moving silently through history and guiding events until it finally came to adorn the face of Duncan.

What we don't yet know is how it managed to move north from Ostagar and leap onto the face of a teenage Hawke as he roamed the wilds of Lothering.

Sure it's the mareting department, but the dev comments make it seem as though they couldn't possibly understand why people would be upset by it.

EA Marketing: Isaac Clarke, two for you. Glenn Coco? FOUR for you, Glenn Coco! You go, Glenn Coco. And uh... "Garren" Hawke. Do we have a "Garren" Hawke here?
DA2: It's Garrett.
EA Marketing: Oh Garrett, here you go, one for you... And none for Marian Hawke, bye.

One problem is that the lack of marketing, even if the content in the actual game is superb, means that many potential players wouldn't even know you could play as female in the game. The ability to choose your gender, class, love interest, etc is a big draw for Bioware games - it seems rather silly how underrepresented the female player character is. I mean, if nothing else, putting "play as male or female" on the back of the case wouldn't kill sales, would it?

Exactly, female Hawke gets all the perks, options, and unique story that male hawke gets. However, from the marketing perspective its all like 'facial hair, big angry guy with horns, blood, hot pirate with big boobs, rip guy in half, RAWR!' I mean I love Blur trailers but that's really all it is if you break it down.

This ^

As a gamer who prefers RPGs over all other forms of games... the way games are marketed these days tends to annoy the crap out of me as well. This is mostly because they are marketing them more for their gameplay than the story or atleast the plot which in the case Dragon Age, is what matters most as DA is mostly about Thedas and the 'lore' of the continent instead of being it's specific characters...most especially it's main character. To me the demographic they are marketing to is not only wrong when talking about it from a male/female standpoint( as I believe  you can definetelly market this game to both males n females[ages 18-35] from both a action( blood n gore) and a storyline standpoint). I also DESPISE multi-player type games because they tend to completely detract from what matters most( in my opinion anyways) which is the story.

It probably helps that there are female writers on the DA team, I'd imagine.

Yea. And I have to wonder what having generic trailers with generic male protagonist actually does to help sales.

Hawke's beard has been passed down the hawk line for generations!  Bonus points if you know what thats from. I'm sure you'll get a clip of her speaking soon they probably save the best for last.

Exactly.

Example:

Bioware: "Is it really that important that you need to hear from her?"

Fans: "...... No. We just decided to create a 35 page topic about it out of boredom." /sarcasm

IIRC there are more female writers on DA2 than male.  Jennifer, Mary, Sheryl, David and Lukas (apologies if I missed a main writer)  Not that a certain gender counts inherently makes the writing better but a more varied perspective and background in all things certainly helps IMNSHO.

These types of things change slowly.  I happen to be in an understanding mood at the moment so I am reletively accepting as of this posting.  Tommorrow I may not be and might decide to agitate for it :D
