One that we hear quite frequently. It's not an uncommon opinion that DAO is a game filled with fake British accents galore. God help us should we ever go to Orlais and fill our game with so many ear-splittingly fake French accents. Image IPB

So we're NOT going to Orlais in DA2? :crying: I loved that little perfume vendor in Denerim. Plus the accent sounds awesome and sexy.

Hey whatever. You can source your Orlesian VO from China for all I care, so long as they sound more like Riordan and Leliana and less like Marjolaine and Erlina (who I'm pretty sure had fake accents anyway). I felt phantom phlegm in my own throat after listening to those two lovely ladies, eesh.

I dunno, it has possibilities.  I would just want Hawke to greet every person with "and who in the Maker's name are you?"

I didn't think they were fake, they were just very very very... French.

Do we know if femHawke was in Origins? I was wondering about Ser Cauthrien's VA as a possibility.

They didn't sound like fake French accents to me. They sounded more like French people who aren't remotely trying to sound English. :P

Hey I could be wrong, but I've heard some pretty heavy French accents and they've never been as grating as that.

I just went and watched a clip of Claudia Black on Youtube and OMFGTHATISMORRIGAN...

It just never hit me that I could hear a fake character's voice in real life. Bloody hell it sounds exactly like her. She didn't change her voice one bit.

I'm going to go sort out my head now...

Those were definitely fake accents on Marjolaine and Erlina. Voiced by the same person, too Kath Soucie (aka Phil and Lil from Rugrats, lol).

People speaking in their native language can be just as unusual. I know someone who sounds like a cartoon character without even modulating her voice. The actress--

--seems to be from NYC.

This works with a bunch of other B-ware VAs too, like Brandon Keener, Simon Templeman, Robin Sachs...Keener is the craziest one for me because he sounds exactly the same as when he voices Garrus and I'm used to that voice coming out of a Turian. Craaazy.

Oh and Templeman and Sachs show up in Buffy/Angel.

I think that 1.some people really don't have an ear for accents, and 2.non-RP English accents throw us North Americans off because RP is what we hear most of the time as an "English accent". Pretty sure that explains the misconception that real English/other UK accents are fake in media.

Thats something that irritates a fair amount of people without a Southern, cockney or RP English accent, although 'tis slightly amusing when forigeners do go to Northern England they tend to get slightly lost and bewildered with the accents wondering why everyone stopped sounding like the Queen or Roger Moore, having family in the traveling industry I've heard more then one story about forigners (mostly Americans) complain about Northern accents.

As for the French accents in DAO I didn't find any of them particularly jarring, living in Southern England (and been to France more times then I can remember) I've come across a lot of French accents, all of them sounding slightly different, so I just assumed that the characters were supposed to come from different areas of Orlais, then again I might have just assumed too much.........

I can't tell whether the accents are fake or not. I'm an American, and I've spent my early years living on both the eastern and western sides of the country, listening to people who've grown up in the northern states and the southern states, AND listening to british comedy shows at the same time. After a while, they all sound the same.

If someone walked up to me and started talking in an english accent, I probably wouldn't notice. So, I can't tell the difference between a 'genuine' and a 'fake' british accent.

Unless by 'british', you mean 'scotish'. That's a whole other can of worms.

templeman for me, hearing loghain's voice coming out of a quarian had me looking at the screen dumbfounded, pleasantly of course.

I will say that VA's do not necessarily use the same accents when acting. I recently was watching a "Crossing Jordan" marathon and when Steve Valentine spoke, I definitely did NOT hear Alistair. I was rather disappointed actually. So, if we get the same VA for Marjolaine or Erlina in DA2, it would be possible for us not to recognize her at all.

Yeah, the video I was watching was of Claudia at a Farscape con. She sounded different in an American TV show.

He is, and isn't Claudia Black Australian?

Claudia Black is Australian, and Steve Valentine's accent is authentic. The voices you hear from them are their natural speaking voices. That doesn't really seem to deter some folks from deciding that they (or anyone else) aren't authentic, somehow.

As far as I understand it Steve Valentine is originally from Bishopbriggs (a suburb of Glasgow, Scotland) although I'm sure I read that he left when he was 16 or thereabouts.  Seems like his natural voice must  have developed as he moved through life as that is absolutely not a NW Glasgow accent, I know, I've lived here all my life.  I think this may be why is accent was so difficult to place.

It's called the Internet Movie Database.

I like Kath Soucie, she's very talented, but she really shouldn't try a French accent again. The first time Erlina spoke in my game, I heard immediate jeering from over my left shoulder from a person who works every day with French people from various regions. Generally the policy of sticking to natural accents is best for that very reason.

I'm a bit surprised that you're surprised. I thought Erlina was the most obviously fake accent in the game.

Yup, Claudia Black does a very convincing American accent.  Also excellent as Matriarch Aethyta in Mass Effect 2.

May be fake, was certainly not pleasant to the ear, but I swear I've heard some very similar stuff in English classes, a few years ago. :D

@ Wynne

it's fake because she was born in NY? sorry, imdb's new layout is a bit confusing.

okay, time to out myself: i like marjolaines thick french accent, it's a perfect fit for the character, especially in comparison to lelianas softer accent. And before you ask: Yes, i have spent time in france, and yes, i have met people who had an accent like that.

"The first time Erlina spoke in my game, I heard immediate jeering from over my left shoulder from a person who works every day with French people from various regions. "

uh, no offense to you or this "person who works every day with french people", but that is not proof. There were a lot of people who knew someone from france, spent a lot of time in france,..., and because of that knew without a doubt that lelianas accent was horribly wrong.
