Hi, i just recently descided to play mass effect again after a short break, but when i open the file to launch mass effect my screen dies and i don't get a picture. i can hear everything that is going on but i don't get any images, my screen just seems to go into standby mode.

1.
  a. The PC version of Mass effect 1

  b. MePhysical disk from game

2.  System Details

  a. Intel Core 2 Quad CPU Q8300 @ 2.50GHz, 2499 Mhz, 4 Core

  b.  NIVIDIA GeForce GT 230,  1.50 GB, version 8.17.11.9745

  c. Realtek High Definition Audio

  d. Windows 7 home premium 64x bit

  e. Direct X 11

3.  Problem Details

  b.  What?:
screen cuts out and goes to standby mode, but the programs are working in the background, i can still hear the game through my speakers and can still use the mouse, i just can't see what i'm doing.

  c.  When?
This problem occours when i try to launch the game via the shortcut on my desktop with the link "C:\\Program Files (x86)\\Mass Effect\\Binaries\\MassEffect.exe"

  d.  Where?
This problem occours around my screen only it doesn't seem to effect any other processes, therefore i believe it's safe to assume it's caused my a fualt in the rendering of the games display.

  e.  Why?
I have no idea why this happens, it has never happened before and i've been able to successfully run mass effect on this exact same PC before with no problems.

Thanx for reading =)

You made the choice to avoid following any tech-oriented user forum's typical type of system description,  and then paid no attention to a moderator's instruction on how to report (Chris wrote that for the ME-2 forum, I only quoted him), so I personally will either wait until you do so, or else let you find another way to learn (searching the forum archives, for instance).

You have been pointed in the direction of the thread which explains what information we require in order to help troubleshoot your problem. If you arent willnig to submit a proper fault report, theres not much we can do to help.

I've edited my first post with all the information it says to include through that link.

Ps: I would just like to mention that as a newcomer to the site I did feel I was treated with little kindness and guidance.

With the first post being just a link on its own, I didn't know what the link lead to until I pasted it into my address bar. I skim read the article, which admittedly was a mistake on my part, but I didn't know of the importance it had. I also wasn't aware of how much more formal this forum is to other help forums.

I'm sorry for dragging the diagnosis of this problem along, and from the looks of it, I've made a rather stupid impression. however I would like to say that if I was foretold of the importance of all the information I have now posted, within the post in which the link was posted I'm sure I would have posted my information earlier and probably reached a conclusion to the problem by now.

I'm not saying this to have a go at anyone, I'm just suggesting a bit of courtesy and reassurance would go a long way to helping new members become familiar with how the site works. =)

thanx for reading and sorry for any inconveniences i may have caused

Have you tried installing Direct X 9c? There are files needed in DX9 that are not found in Direct X 10/11 that older games specifically need to run correctly in Win7 64bit.

A reply was posted that has already disappeared.  Geforce drivers have been very erratic over the past three years or so, with many of them not working at all for one model Geforce or another.  In one case on this page, a somewhat older Geforce wasn't working properly with new drivers, and now works better with an older one.

The driver in this case is comparatively older, as such things go, so a somewhat newer driver was suggested, but that suggestion has diappeared already.

Sorry you felt that way, but you must bear in mind that the forums description clearly states that these is a user to user support forum, with EA providing the official support. The "Read First" thread which I pointed you towards is stickied at the top of the forum, which many people neglect to bother reading before postnig. There are only so many times you can point people in the direction of that thread before you become frustrated, and frustration tend to make you say things that get taken the wrong way. More than one person has taken offence to my blunt approach, so I now just point them in the right direction and leave it at that.

First thing to try is as Ghostwriter suggested, is to install DX9.0c, a copy of which should be on the game disk.

The other thing I noticed was the revision of video drivers. I dont recognise the revision number you gave. Latest drivers are listed as 266.58. Bring up your nVidia control panel, select help, then system information. That should tell us which particular revision you are using.

I've discovered the problem.

I had my PC conected to my screen with an HDMI cable, i pluged a usual VGA cable in and the game works fine. but changing the cable did mess up my resolution which is annoying.

I can play the game fine now, but i was wondering if any of you guys know a way i could play the game through an HDMI cable or if i have to use the VGA whilst im playing the game.

cheers

I guess that could work, or it might have something to do with the way the data is transmitted causing the problem.

ill probably buy an hdmi to VGA adapter and try it out.
